Blue mountain: The worst decision ever.

Ok, this all started yesterday, when some n00b fell on the smallest drop in the blue mountain bike park. He apparently cracked his skull, no longer than an inch long. As I rode by the scene, I here crying and see bike patrol all over him. I keep riding and hit a jump in the progression park (pretty much terrain park), and continued on with my daily ride. This being my last run, little did I know this would be the last jump that I would hit ever again at blue mountain.

The next morning (this morning), I arrive at the lineup to a very unpleasant surprise. My freind, Sam is standing at the line up. I walk over to him.

"Yo Graeme, Guess what"?

"what"?

"There are no more jumps at blue"

I laughed

"No buddy, im not joking. A kid fell yesterday and the result is that there are no more remaining jumps on blue mountain"

"Your Kidding, Right"?

"Uh no"...

So after this, we walk into the line. The liftie says (we know all of the lifties and they know us on a name to name basis), "passes please". So we pull out our passes, like usual, and Wob (the liftie) Says "Where are your green stickers guys"?

Now, theres has been no such thing as green stickers, and so we asked what they were. He said any child under the age of 16 needs a green sticker to ride the trails now (even though there all flat now..), and that we needed to take an "assessment".

Me and Sammo (and our other riding freinds), are some of the more advanced riders at blue mountain, and we had to take a lesson. Now what happened during this lesson was pretty funny. We passed the instructors, and after one run they gave us our stickers. We went up the lift.

As soon as we got to the top we knew it was going to be bad. They had already been destroying trails since 4am this morning. We learned this at the top from the lifties. The trail list follows (and status).

From the blue mtn site.

Double black diamond - Autobahn - closed (being bulldozed tommorow)

Almost every trail effected. Bullshit.

I have learned through the course of 4 1/2 hours, a bike park can be comepletely ruined. Seasons passes are being refunded for only 25 % of retail... horrible.

All this because some snotty nosed kid from Toronto who has never ridden a downhill trail in his life falls. Cunts need to learn how to run a bike park.

Anyways, thats my rant, tell me your thoughts.

how could they do that? those were some of the best trails, wait. they were the best dh trails in ontario. that's soo incredibly shitty. those trails were sex.

this is a tradegy.

yo that's horrible I was up there 2 weeks ago, it was awesome!

but kitchener is making a bike park this spring so you can make the trek down here if yoiu'd like

so was it just blues decision to take down all the jumps or was it the screaming mother of the kid who pushed them over the edge? over all i doubt it was the one kid alone who did it. probably the increasing number of injuries or whatever.

either way, i always wanted to make my way out there to ride, guess i never will.

yes it is intrawest

and wow that is preaty gay it has been so nice this season

i was planning on treking down next week but i donno now

Ahhh.

Nothing bothers me more than everyone elses good times and passions being ruined because someone cannot take responsibility for their own actions.

Was this kid wearing a helmet? It's pretty dumb doing DH/FR trails/dirt jumps (Im assuming that's what blue-mountan has) without a helmet.

this kid is gonna get so much shit if he ever comes within 50km of that mountain now

this is some pretty disapointing shit.

i mean, what do we have to do to tell people "ride within your limits"? we're becoming so much like the US with personal injury issues that it's making me sick.

people need to take responsibility for their actions and those of their children. does blue have to institute a full-suspension only rule? this would at least keep the hacks off the hill and only the serious people on. unfortunately the idea would definately hinder growth of the sport.

needless to say this will definately change my bike buying decision. i was looking at either a giant glory DH or kona stab deelux. now im thinking santa cruz bullit or kona coiler deelux. at least my cottage is only 2 hours away from camp fortune in ottawa.

SANTA CRUUUUUUUZ

and this sucks. i havent even been able to make it up yet this summer. looks like theirs no point in coming anymore.

so fucking ridiculous. mountain biking is one of the most dangerous sports, everytime you go down is hurts.. pedal, sproket, handlebars, whatever will get you. the risk is so obvious and with liability form you must sign before you ride, how can blue moutain be resposible for this. its so stupid and frustrating. people can't take responsiblity for their own actions and in turn fuck everyone over.

regardless of what happens. blue mountain will not be getting a dollar from me for on hill activities this winter. i will not ski there because of this regardless of their park.

i hope the on hill manager and insurance companies choke on a dick!

Yeah, even just singletrack XC riding can get sketchy and you can bail bad doing that.

Ask the kid I saw walking back holding his should with some buddies pushing his bike a few weeks back on the local county park trails. (and I know for a fact he was a decent rider as I had seen him riding a bunch of other times)

And then add jumps and even higher speeds. No shit you can get seriously hurt.

I can see some shit like this killing parks for skiing and snowboarding in the future.

unfortunately people don't take responsibility for their own actions and this shit happens.

fuck blue mountain! fuck the parents of that little shit who broke his neck! fuck the ontario legal system and fuck anyone that will continue to support that fuck wad of a ski hill!! BURN IN HELL!!!

Afterthought.

It used to be JUST the US that was the joke of the world when it came to liability and personal responsibility, but I think it's gradually spreading as people are realizing how easy it is to make a quick buck and point the finger.

There was a news story here in Buffalo where some 10 year old kid was at a local ice rink, and shooting hockey pucks at a father and his 5 year old son. The mother was nowhere around at the time, and the father removed the 10 year old from the ice. Not violently, but he did drag the kid off the ice. Noone ended up hurt. The dumbshit mother was trying to sue the town, and pressed child endangerment charges against the man.

The internet won though as the local news station has a web-forum, and the insults were contant, and people off the local auto forum i am on looked up her phone number and were calling her.

She eventually dropped the charges and lawsuit citing public embarassment and humiliation.

So the internet can work! There is hope yet!

no not at all. intrawest has done phenomenal things for downhill mountain biking with the Whistler Bike Park. this issue is strictly in ontario. apparently the injury rate is too high for blue mtn management to sleep well at night. they've already restricted kids 16 and under to riding with an adult or proving their riding ability via a test that apparently some older guys wouldn't pass. this way they know the little bastards aren't simply hacks with a dirt jumper thinking they can ride DH. but then again, i would fully support not allowing hardtails since im getting a new rig in the very near future.

Ditto, but then again it didn't get a penny from me last year or the year before that either. Fuck blue, fuck thier management, and if Gary - the man that single handedly wrecked ontario's best park - still works there then fuck that old bald fuck too.

Have a nice day :)

blue moved in and plowed every man made feature on the hill. what i don't get is that the injury rate is no where near comparable to that of whistler so what they are doing makes no sense at all.

i wish they would just step up and give a public announcement as to what is going on and why it's all happening. i know guys that are selling their downhill bikes and moving to cross-country bikes becuase rumours are spreading that DH at blue is finished.

and mike, yes, that asshat is still there!

i completely disagree with what the other threads are saying. now i may come off as an insensitive prick but this whole issue is about taking responsibility for your own actions. whether these rumours regarding pending lawsuits are true or not, if you child does something dangerous and injures him/herself because they are being reckless, in this case riding terrain that exceeds their ability level, no one is responsible but them. hundreds of bikers go to blue each year and it seems the ones that raise stinks like this are the inexperianced riders. i mean sure, i hit the occasional tree and the last one i hit left me with a substantial enough bruise that i was seriously thinking of getting it looked at for fear of developing a clot. if i had and it went bad for me, i wouldn't have sued blue because there was a tree next to the trail. I lost control, I was going a little fast and I hit the tree. none of it was blue mtn's fault.
