Mayor Michael Bloomberg turned the National Guard away from Brooklyn because they were carrying guns.

NewsBusters reported, via FOX Nation:

Mayor Bloomberg has snubbed Borough President Markowitz’s impassioned plea to bring the National Guard to Hurricane Sandy-scarred Brooklyn — arguing that approving the Beep’s request would be a waste of federal manpower and turn the borough into a police state.

“We don’t need it,”[/b] Mayor Bloomberg said on Wednesday during a press update on the city’s ongoing Hurricane Sandy cleanup. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.”[/b]

Markowitz demanded the National Guard’s help just an hour before Bloomberg’s press conference, claiming that the NYPD and FDNY are “brave — but overwhelmed” by all the challenges Sandy brought when it visited the borough on Monday night: flooding, power outages, and looting.

Is that a fuckin joke? What an idiot... Its the armed fucking forces what the hell do you expect? I cant even believe this is a real thing, I say they get the go ahead from the CaC and post up HQ in his mansion.

So sad. They have been giving out gas, food, and medical supplies too. Not to mention they might help deter some of the degenerates looting and breaking into peoples houses.

Mayor Bloomberg uses generators, resources to run a marathon while NY citizens suffer and starve

Mayor Bloomberg has now abandoned Staten Island victims and has decided to redirect large power generators and police forces to a New York marathon being held today. What's emerging now is a political elite that is oblivious to the needs of the People. As Reuters reports:

"I just walked past four huge generators. Those could be put to use for people who need them," said Marjorie Dial, a tourist from Oregon who was shocked to see the generators in Central Park, where the marathon finishes. "What they've discovered on Staten Island should have been the tipping point - the bodies."

"Gas is being rationed in parts of New York and New Jersey. The pumps are running on empty -- and so is patience," reports CBS News. "That desperation is why there is so much panic buying at the pump." One fuel buyer said, "This is crazy, it's like post-apocalyptic scenarios, you know with this gas. It's as important as food and water to people. It's a dogfight out here."

baahahahahhahahah

So does bloomberg think that that the national guard is a bad symbol to our society? this thinking from a guy who was FORCED to cancel a marathon from happening in the midst of a catastrophe. moron. I can't wait till someone in this thread tries to defend his actions.

correct me if i'm wrong, but this guy avoided the draft. he probably has an irrational fear of the military and guns.

I can see where he's coming from. they have no reason to be armed while helping hurricane victims.

they did eventually cancel it.

but they actually set up all the generators preparing for the run.....so the fact that they didn't use those for the citizens is beyond comedy and should be a wake up call to those citizens who believe they are even relevant.

Thats like telling police officers to un-arm themselves when they are doing something that doesn't pose an immediate threat. God you're dumb.

not at all. a police officer on duty is still responsible for all their other duties, which may include needing armament. a national guard personnel called to a natural disaster has no other business but helping out those who need it. unless you think there's a chance Russia will jump on the opportunity and invade NY.

In the ice storm the military played a huge and essential role in helping out those in need. They did NOT carry any armaments on them. that's also the military, not just the national guard. The military has more reason to be armed.

You implied they are not a part of the Military. I honestly have a hard time comprehending why someone would want them to be un armed. Whats the point?

they carry guns because their job isn't exclusively to hand out food and supplies. It's to provide general assistance and security.

They are also there in case riots, looting, and whatever else breaks out. It's unfortunate to have to admit it, but unless you're too young to remember, we all know what it was like after katrina. In the off chance that your stuff survived, there's a good chance someone stole it.

When they go in, they are in effect an extension of the police. Therefore, they carry guns.

This. I'm not able to find a solid source. The Brooklyn newspaper that all the other sites cite says that Bloomberg said this during a press update on wednesday (the 32st) but I just read the press update that was released by the mayor wednesday and it makes no mention of this.

It might be true, but I'm not seeing good sourcing yet.

good post. My dad is state encon police and got called to go help out in long island. There working 16 hour shifts, mostly at gas stations and stores because people are getting out of hand. yesterday they had a guy hit another in the head with a hammer over gas. I'm sure they would love to have a few extra armed people to alleviate them

did not imply that. just implied that they're lesser than an active serviceman in the army. most of these guys have full time jobs outside the national guard. they are definitely a step down from someone in the army.

I certainly wouldn't want someone armed with an assault rifle coming into my home to help take my grandmother to the hospital or to cut a fallen tree in my yard. I'd feel a hell of a lot safer if they weren't armed.

given the option of a soldier with a gun, or a crowd of pissed off people, or even an individual with a hammer...I'd take the soldier every time.

the military says so, you are aware that the national guard is the ARMY and it can (and have been) be deployed right?

Here is a reputable news source explaining Air National Guard troops in Staten Island (a part of New York state) giving out water and MREs

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/11/syracuse_air_national_guard_as.html

Let's forget for a moment that the Governor of any state commands the national guard, and that any city mayor is powerless to stop decisions of the Governor in matters of the national guard. If it looks like bullshit and smells like bullshit, it's probably bullshit.

So saying that they didn't need the additional help for security gets turned into he won't let them help because they have guns?

Talk about spin.

He literally said "the NYPD is the only people we want on the street there with guns"

Unrustle your jimmies.

This is very legit. fuck a police state that will just make everybody scared and panic. bloomberg is right.

I say either they bring water and supplies AND their guns...or they bring nothing at all.

You can't demand their services without allowing their requirements.

Once again, I reiterate. They are NOT the American Red Cross. They aren't there exclusively to give you bottles of water.

We he didn't actually ask them to come without their guns, he said they would be better off elsewhere because the NYPD had the security issue handled.

I certainly didn't hear anything about NY city being invaded or riots breaking out or mass looting.

There is nothing happening which the NYPD cannot handle.

their ONLY reason to be there is exclusively non-combat.

there is NO need for them to carry weapons. Leaving them locked securely in their trucks would be fine in my opinion though.

The full context of his quote was that NYPD was doing a fine job handling security and that they don't need the national guard and their guns to help with that. This does not mean that he doesn't want the national guard to not have guns, he simply meant that the security was being properly handled and that pulling the national guard from their other assigned duties would be detrimental. I don't see a scandal here.

Me neither, but the way he said it came out a little awkward. Instead of specifically mentioning their guns he should have just said that security was being handled by the NYPD and additional force was unnecessary and should be used elsewhere.

no, by no means a scandal.

I think this comes down to an issue of uniformity. This is the way the national guard does it, and it's the way they always have, no exceptions. So just leave it as is, because it works.

And while I don't know the specifics of it, bringing guns probably actually frees up troops. If you leave that stuff behind, it has to be guarded. Bring it with you, no guards needed.
