Blackmagic davinci resolve 12 problems

I just got this video editor because its free. It seems really good but i cant get any videos onto it. I try dragging and dropping from my desktop and importing from the from the software itself but nothing is happening. I do notice that when i start it up it says: quicktime encoding failed or something like that. idk, i need some help

It's more of a color grading tool than an editing tool (although it can do simple stuff like cut and insert fine)

Just look up a tutorial on how to use it lol. Add your hard disk to the browsing section and import your videos from there, then create a timeline and drag your clips onto that.

It's really intuitive tbh, just watch a tutorial on the basics.

This one's great if you literally have zero idea on how to use it

It's for the older version, but it's pretty similar, you should be able to figure it out

I've heard of this issue happening recently with Resolve 12. First off, what kind of media are you trying to import? Also what are your systems specifications?

The quicktime encoding error has been popping up a lot! It seems to be a communication error between Resolve and Quicktime. I would uninstall Resolve 12 from your system. Reinstall Resolve 12 as Admin and then running as Admin on Resolve. Depending on the OS you are on, you may just be able to left click on the Resolve icon, and then run as administrator.

Thanks, I made it run as admin and the quicktime problem went away but I still cant get clips into it.

What kind of file format are you trying to import? Have you tried importing a JPG or TIFF? If your footage was recorded with an AVCHD codec, make sure you wrap the file in a MOV container.

To import media you should be in the media tab. On the upper left side of the screen you will see the browser, where you can navigate to your hard drives. Below that is the media pool where you will store everything that you will be able to access within your project.

In the browser window navigate to where your media is locate on your system, then drag the media you want to import into the media pool. When you want to edit your media, select the edit tab. You will see a media pool window where you can access the media you just imported. Now you can start adding media to your timeline.

ok, I am new to this stuff and I'm still having trouble. the only thing in the media storage is my videos, but the only thing in that is an empty folder. also there are three other other ones that go by letters but they don't have anything in them either, i cant drag and drop either. I don't know if its because i need to convert the file or something. should i check the cameras settings when i filmed the videoÉ

Hi Geib! I think you had mentioned in your original post that your media was stored in a folder on your desktop. It also seems as though you are working on a PC, being that you get three hard disk options, which are each labeled with a letter. You can check the codec your footage by left clicking on a single clip and then clicking view properties or view info (this is just in the folder where your media is stored, not in resolve). I had also mentioned in my previous post about the file being wrapped as a MOV. What I mean by that is the extension of the file. By looking at both the codec and wrapper, you will easily be able to tell if you need to transcode your media before importing into Resolve. What camera system did you shoot your footage on?

In resolve you should be navigating to your C: drive, this is where all of your computers information is most likely stored. From there navigate to the folder where you stored your media. Then you should see your media in the browser window. Select the media you want to add into the media pool, then drag and drop your selected clips into the pool.

What version of windows are you running? If you are using windows 10, you should be able to drag media directly from its location on the C: drive and drop into the media pool itself.

In Resolve, if you are still not seeing anything in your C: drive, make sure you are running as an Administrator.

^ if it doesn't show up, you need to add your drive manually and then browse from there. The tutorial I posted above shows how to do this.
