Black swan

man, of the 2 years I lived in Whis very few good quality films came into town. I usually had to head to Squam or Van. 500 days of summer never even went to whis, fuck.

Black swan is so well shot. Honestly, Darren Aronofsky has this really great interpretation of perspective vs reality and uses the camera so well to translate this within the frame. As I mentioned in another thread, he's only had one real flop, and that's pretty impressive for someone who's fairly "new" to the commercial film scene. and his first film Pi was alright. aside from the lack of character development.

Black swan is everything I hoped it would be. I left completely dumbfounded. I felt eerie the rest of the night, and even though the film leaves you with a very uncomfortable feeling, that's evidence right there that it was made well.

 
Myself and my four friends were speechless. If this does not win best picture, i will be surprised. It affected me way more than any other movie this year. Like i still feel strange.
 
to be honest, until i read something about it yesterday, i thought it was a ballerina biopic. and despite the fact that i love natalie and mila, i wasn't going to see it. but this, this is great news.

First 40 minutes, hmm, seems like a pretty ordinary movie with mirroring towards The Wrestler but instead being about balleri-- OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK FUCK FUCK

I just think this is the Rosemary's Nightmare of the 21st century. As others in this thread, I just felt eerie for a couple of hours. Portman for Best Actress, Swan for Best Film, no doubt. Just an utterly compelling presentation of filmwork.

 
I think you mean to credit Aronofsky's loyal and talented DP, Matthew Libatique. He did the camera work for Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and The Fountain; he's probably my favorite cinematographer.

Anybody notice this? The divider between the two cells is fake; it isn't wide enough to be truly made of brick. Also note how the two cells are perfect inversions of each other, from the arrangement of the chair to the heater. Perhaps the paper-thin divider between her and the identical adjacent cubicle is a metaphor for the weak barrier between her split personality?

Also, the subway scenes were shot with nothing more than a 7D, Canon 24mm, and a handheld light. No stabilization or anything, and it matched up with the rest of the footage very well (which was shot on s16).
 
I am really impressed with how the 7D scenes matched up with Super 16. It's definitely my favorite film from 2010. Just something to note, almost every scene was shot in a room with multiple mirrors and they avoided reflections in every single shot, with all the handheld movement and dance scenes I found it to be extremely impressive. I know they had to paint themselves out of the mirrors in some scenes but most of it was due to a extremely aware and talented DP.

I just noticed, that that is not in fact a heater, but a bag. And in the adjacent cubicle, you can see the reflection of Natalie Portman! I love Aronofsky's freaky subtleties; he isn't patronizing and blatant about it. It blends the elements into the story in a realistic way. It's what puts him above other all directors, in my opinion.
 
saw it last night

absolutely ridiculous and trippy movie.

i thought it was amazingly done.

i left the theater in awe

i recommend it to everyone
 
Dude i think that the reason you can see all the same stuff is because there is a mirror on the side of the wall behind natalie. Near the end when she "kills" mila she hits her into that mirror. Just saying.
 
Aren't there segments where there are multiple people sitting at the desk? Maybe I need to watch it again.

If not, its all the same. The point is, they mirrored her desk space to create a visual metaphor for her split personality. Right on.
 
The best movie I've seen in a very long time. Incredible stuff, and Slandypoo just made it better for me with that pic.
 
Exactly man i almost cried when natalie portman was fucking the girl from that 70's show. I've seen a lot of porn in my day but that was just... breathtaking
 
I believe that's a mirror and not another cubicle... that's why you see everything mirrored and the wall appears paper-thin.
 
it was good... but not good engough to beat the fighter for best movie..

mind fucks are not popular with the masses... its a shame.. even though i liked the fighter more than the black swan!
 
Holy dkfalk;dshfkadsf mind blown. Maybe this is scene is shot at that angle to give the viewer what slandypoo was talking about, but really its just a mirror. Is this the new movie to debate like inception was?

its a mirror, natalie slams mila kunas into it in the scene when she hallucinates killing her.

all i can really say about it is i hope to god i never go insane. had me a bit off for a few weeks for sure.
 
I'd say of course she was real, unless she was some weird allegory for her dark side, seeing that the director talked about her ("She is your stand-in"), the guys in the bar talked to her first and a lot of people talked about her/noticed her while in the same room.
 
That's what I'm trying to say; they did this on purpose, and the entire film is loaded with angles like that. Matthew libatique is a genius
 
While I thought the cinematograhy and editing were outside of this world I really didn't find it to be an amazing movie. Might just be me but the incessant sex scenes destroyed it for me. Nothing against this but i'm sorry you don't have to show numerous sex/masturbation/lesbian scenes to get across that someone is sick and or the story is twisted. It doesn't have to be every 5 minutes. It could be kept in a much better moderation and still get the point across. Half way through the movie I was thinking If I wanted to watch porn I should've stayed at home. I may want to watch it again and see if my opinion changes, because I see being able to pick up more a second time around.
Otherwise I give it a 6/10.
 
its not sex for sex. the lesbian scene is saying how she becomes united with her black swan. when she was touching her it meant that the black swan inside her was creaping in on her. there is plenty more stuff like this when you look at the film with symbolism in mind. thats what seperates Arenofsky from most other directors. the whole film is so indirect, a small part of it is told in a litteral way, most of it is metaphores and symbols.

Portman was crazy good too. its rare that I recognise actors works but her facial acting was amazing. most of her feelings and story is told through her face, which most actors these days are incapable of doing.
 
The story had a lot to do with obsession (at least for me), so moderation would detract from that aspect of the film. There were a lot of sex scenes, but there were also quite a few other recurring events, like her hurting her fingers. So I definitely see what you're trying to get at, but I think all the sex scenes contributed a lot to the film since they do provoke such a strong reaction.
 
i think visually, and suspense wise it did an amazing job. the film was definitely twisted and had some yucky, and equally yummy parts... i was admittedly disappointed however. i didn't like that there was no discussion on her mental issues, and i thought the film was going to be entirely different. but i guess having left the theatre not knowing what to say for the following hours probably said a lot about it. i think if people want to see it they should, but i wouldn't recommend it to just anyone. it was quite artsy and somewhat weird i guess? although i've seen a lot more bizarre... anyways. i guess i went in with expectations and i guess basically you shouldn't go in expecting something...
 
She didnt have a mental condition jen. Its not a litteral story, those mental issues represent her internal struggle.
 
i think it's fair to say she probably has anxiety(throwing up) or an eating disorder(doesn't want cake/throwing up), along with potential ocd or paranoid something (imagining skin ripping, chronic scratching). she imagined her bad side was someone else, which could easily be like skitozphrenia or something, and she was a twenty something year old who lived with an overbearing mom... thus could mean, either she's had previous mental stability issues, and needs a caretaker, or her moms over protectiveness has created her instability. girl was a whack job.
