Why is it that i never, i mean never, see a friggin black person on the slopes... dont they teach you how to ski in brooklyn, i mean c'mon...

wait that was a lie, diane roff or roth or something was up at my local slope (Ski Roundtop, York PA) she is an olympic gold medalist for downhill or something and lives somewhere near me, and she did like free skiing lessons for all the little project children like last tuesday... but thats the only time i have seen em...

Whoever thought 'gee i wonder if i can strap wood on my feet and go down a icy hill and not kill myself?' is a genius...

pg. 120 january issue of freeze. Nicky Adams. Hes pretty black. but i know what you mean, not many black people ski, and its not a racist comment guys, its just a fact so dont get all offended and shit.

 
thank you... im not racist, hell i hang out with like 50% black people, but i just dont know why they dont ski/snowboard... yet i see a good bit rollerblading, skateboarding, and all those other extreme sports... maybe all the whitness of snow is intimidating

i heard that that they hate the cold b/c their skin is thinner than whites. i guess thats why they have more muscle definition and look stronger....oh ad dont attack on me cuz i heard this from my health teacher at school when i was still in high school

 
How can you say Nicky isn`t a skier?

He rides 2 to 4 times a week, every week. Does comps, photo/video shoots and kicks ass...

 
My best friend's black, and we ski together all the time. And his bro snowboards. But I know what you mean, seems like you don't see a whole lot of color on the slopes. Probably because the so-called 'black culture' is all about city gangs and skateboarding. But hey, who knows?

3)There is a nation-wide organization called Black Ski which goes places some of you wankers couldn't afford to visit

4)For the illiterate caveman who's to dense to look beyond MTV, 'black culture' is not about skating and gangs. Try reading something by WEB DuBois or Alexander Dumas (you know, 'The Three Musketeers') and try listedning to Gill Scott-Heron, Miles Davis, or Glen Spearman.

I met a black skiier at the x-qualifiers last year in northstar. Maybe it was Nicky?

Anyway, he was a damn good skiier.

And there is a really cool black ski patrol guy at my mountain.

Eat. Sleep. Breathe. Ski.

 
I saw a black guy in Freeze. He was sponsored my salomon. It was like the january issue. But i never see any black people on the slopes.

dont know what you guys are talkin about, 40 percent of the people at my hill are minorities, buch of them black. but the bigger question is, who cares?

yea i saw the black ski group greg was talkin about when they came to pc ut, but i see a good number of afro americans (to be politically correct) skiing, but if there were a reason for the lack of them skiing its because, and this is coming from something my history teacher said, immigrants tend to move where other imigrants are so that they arnt singled out, and since africans lived in some hot ass temps where they came from, they naturally went somewhere they were used to, somewhere not cold, and then the whole immigration thing went along and that is why, but i see many different races skiing now, u just have to pay attention

Whats wrong with calling black people black? There arent many true African Americans anymore, theyre American. I guess some people could be offended or sensitive to the term but I think in general its ok, I mean my freind calls himself black, and just jokes around in general whatever race you are.

As to why black people dont ski, sort of a good question, and theres a few decent explanations:

It is historically a white mans sport. This means that black people may be intimidated to break into the sport because of the history and the stigma (that white people generally dominate the sport).

Marginalization: this sort of ties into the aforementioned post but whatever, I wanted to mention it because it is the actual term for this phenomenon. I kind of forgot the def. of this term but it sort of follows the above post and hits on the fact that, well just lost my train of thought.

Income: There are more black people, coupled with the fact that it is harder to be as successful as a black person (face it, its true, how many black CEOs are there?)

And finally to quote my freind 'black people dont like the cold,' although he does want to go and try snowboarding this year with me.

I sincerely doubt that I have offended anyone but race is a touchy issue these days, I speak from personal experience and general knowledge gained from literature and school. Feel free to bitch me out.

Okay, a few more points to clear up...

1)Most black people call themselves black because we realize that Africa is not a part of our culture anymore. We created a new, American culture - including the creation of the only American 'classical' music: Jazz

2)Every sport in America has been a 'white man's' sport at some point or another. If you haven't noticed, when a sport becomes extremely important to a culture in general (football and basketball) or to individuals (Tiger Woods and golf, the Williams sisters and tennis), people begin to excell in them. It's just like anything else really - intense devotion leads to the honing of skill.

3)Marginalization? I hardly feel marginalized because of my choices of liesure activities.

4)Money is hardly a problem. If black America was its own country, its GNP would rank it as one of the top 15 richest countries in the world. The black middle and upper class has been around since BEFORE the civil war (in the South) and continues to grow. You don't have to be a CEO to be rich, although one of the richest men in America is black (he is the CEO of AOL-Time Warner).

5)Cold is a relative thing. No one likes to freeze their a$$ off, regardless of race.

nicky adams is not a skier bc he cant ski anything but the park. hes spent all his time on skiboards and inline skates. the only reason he has any sponsors is because of his skiboading. i bet you he oculdnt ski in a foot of new powder w/ style

About 80% of skiers can't ski powder because they don't have access to it... Does that mean they're not skiers???

I agree he doesn't have the best mogul skier technique, but he'll ride anything you throw at him and make it look good, regardless his skiing technique.

There's plenty of rollerbladers and skiboarders that ski today and rip. Chris Turpin is considered a skier; he used to rollerblade, then skiboarded a few months then switched to skiing about 3 years ago (same as Nicky). Nicky skis because he likes it, he has no signed sponsors (Salomon hooks him up with product only)and therefore has no obligation to ski besides having fun.

If you would know his life story and what he has gone through to make it, you would be amazed at what he has accomplished at such a young age. Then, maybe you would realize how much talent he has and wouldn't post stupid comments like you did...

fuck yeah... Mike Nick.... the guy gets hated on all the time cuz he skiboarded and crossed over to skiing but he is 1 of the top 5 freeskiers... he can throw down anything and im sure he can ride pow better than alot of people, just cuz you see them riding park/pipe doesnt mean when they cant ski anything else, skiing all works together people dont just have the ability to ski a rail and a park but cant even stand in the pow, and most of the pros focus on a certain aspect but try to be an all around good skier...

no one likes the cold but black people do live in new york, detroit, chicago so its not like they cannot stand it. not many black people live in ski towns and to go on ski vacations costs money. And lets face it, there are more whites with money than blacks with money. Also they are only 10% of the population. All the 'rich sports' (sports that people assume you have to be rich to do) like tennis, golf, and skiing dont have many black pros.
