I believe Canon lenses are fundamentally flawed by design. It's basically "use them on our bodies only, or you're hosed." No surprise coming from a company that conducts its business in the same way.

It makes sense that they're leaning towards people with EOS glass from a business standpoint, it's just a bummer that so many people use EOS glass in the first place. There are SO many lenses that are better for much less.
 
The fact you have to use electronics to change the iris on the canon lenses. Also, they focus the wrong way!

But that's with pretty much every lens nowadays heath. All lenses have ONLY got electric diaphragms.
 
Nikon doesn't? Wow, I figured I'd know that. Guess not.

And as far as Zeiss and Leica go: of course. That's manual glass. Samyang has an aperture ring too - quite logical. But then, apart from Nikon all lenses do.
 
Hold on a sec there: then how does the Nikon aperture mechanism work? Do you have to actually twist the aperture ring manually? Like in the old days?

I come off as a total noob now, but nobody in the Netherlands shoots Nikon - not anyone I know anyway.
 
The motor is in the body, and it communicates with the lens via a screw/pin that mechanically controls the lens. This is a much more reliable system because A) mechanical is generally more reliable than electric, and B) it allows you to use Nikon glass on any other camera.

I'm impressed by the footage. I think it's incredible that you can have footage that looks this good for such a low price (especially since it includes a copy of davinci resolve). I'm interested in seeing more sample videos, especially ones filmed in sunny conditions to see the dynamic range performance.

I don't have a use for it at this point in time, but it gets me excited about the future.
 
I'm personally sick of all the BMCC fanboys EVERYWHERE. Now any camera released turns into "THE BMCC IS WAY CHEAPER THAN THIS! THIS CAMERA IS A RIPOFF IT DOESNT EVEN SHOOT RAW"

Well guess what, not everyone needs, has a use for, or would like to use one. Different tools for different jobs. I shoot weddings, I don't need every hour of footage I shoot to fill 1tb of space. I don't want to have a camera restricted to using an internal battery, and records to rather large SSD's (pricer than CF, which already are $$). I don't want to deal with a 2.1x crop factor using EF lenses, designed for a max of 1.6x crop.
 
well said. personally im not a big fan of this camera at all. looks sweet, could be fun to play with but i would much rather spend a little more on the fs700. i feel like some people don't quite have their heads wrapped around the amount of space it will consume with such large files. i have heard some good and some bad things about it so far tho from those who have been lucky enough to see it. one of my professors is getting one tho so as soon as they ship ill still be down there trying to tinker with it cuz it does look really cool, just not for me to own.
 
We got a model sent to my office and I played around with it a bit last week. Chunky form factor aside, it honestly shoots much nicer picture than I imagined. The raw dynamic range is impressive - you can really push the color without the image falling apart, and its low light sensitivity is actually pretty decent. The rolling shutter is a bit gnarly, but it's nothing like a 5D. For 3 grand, I'm thinking it will make a hell of a crash cam.

I don't really shoot much skiing, but I think the form factor would drive me bananas on the mountain.
 
They just made announced a passive (non-iris changing) MFT version, ships in december
 
Im am verry confused by this. Who says every one buying this camera is going to shoot 2.5k raw all day every day? The pro res hd is still a great codec. I think having the optin to shoot 2.5k is great but would i use it every day? No. Its great camera for the money even if you take away the 2.5k. Also the price gap between fs 700 and bmcc is huge. A few thousand dallars is alot. But man if i had enough for an fs 700 i would buy it in a heart beat.
 
fair point, maybe everyone wouldn't shoot in 2.5k all the time and no one can deny that prores its awesome because you wouldn't have to transcode anything. i feel like when some people start shooting in 2.5k they will continue to because it can sometimes be a "fix it in post" kinda helper. being able to stabilize footage and pull in without any quality loss at 1080p would be awesome, plus many more perks of that.

still think that an update for 60fps would be very adequate in the near future, but like with any great camera, it all comes down to whats the right gear for your project. still want to use one tho, they look very user friendly and im pretty excited to see some more footage from it
 
the bmcc is not as valuable as the fs100 for skiing. the camera is for film makers that only need 24p and want raw but dont wanna spend 10k+. its a cool camera but its not for skiing
 
internal battery is miserable too, 90min performance, then divide it by 3 for cold weather stuff....
 
yeah exactly, plus what evan said, its gonna be a good "on set" kind of camera for narrative type works. thats why its not really my cup of tea and why im more interested in the fs series
 
I'm just waiting for the hoards of over-graded and poorly lit/exposed BMC videos to flood Vimeo and Youtube. It's going to be the "5D FF bokeh test" of 2013.
 
i feel like RAW becoming more common in the prosumer market is going to put a whole new meaning to 'we'll fix it in post.'
 
Canon does make some great glass, no doubt. Nikon glass is widely accepted as the better option, quality and functionality wise.

The most logical thing to do would be to make an interchangeable mount system, have the camera come with one and then the option to buy more. It would probably raise the price and would push back a release though.
 
100%, I would have bought it but no 60fps and no internal battery was a deal killer for me. Maybe in the future though...that new 5d3 comparison video makes me hesitate my purchase a bit.
