Black Crows Nocta vs Anima and Sizing

I'm 165 lbs, 5' 11". Advanced skier. Skied 43 days this season before corona virus ended things :/

I enjoy tight terrain in the trees, I also love big surfy turns in the powder at higher speeds. So I value something maneuverable and yet stable.

I currently have a pair of Black Crows Atris 184 cm. I freaking love these things. They are a blast. They are pretty easy to maneuver and yet I feel I can go fast on them as well. They float well. I do find myself leaning back when I hit chop at th end of a powder day especially in more dense snow. Looking to get a dedicated powder ski that will be ideal for deep days and yet float the chop pretty well at the end of the powder day at high speed. I don't really "need" another ski but I'm pretty dang addicted to this sport and find myself wanting another ski :D

Since I've enjoyed the Atris so much, been looking at the Anima and the Nocta. I'm leaning strongly towards the Nocta but would be curious to hear what others think. Considering putting a Salomon Shift S/Lab binding on it to use it for front side deep days and backcountry touring. Seems like the Nocta is a bit lighter and might be better for touring granted many would say there are other skis even better for touring but everything is a compromise.

Anyone have experience with the Nocta vs the Anima? My concern with the Anima is that it wouldn't handle as well at lower speeds in shallower tree terrain.

I'm not concerned with groomer performance at all for this ski. My Atris does great on groomers and will be my groomer day and light powder ski.

As for sizing:

If I get the Nocta I'm trying to decide between the 185 and 190 cm. Like I said my Atris is 184 cm and I feel very comfortable controlling it. The Nocta does have more rocker. But I'm slightly apprehensive to go long only because I previously owned a pair of Salomon QST 106's in the 188 cm length and they just felt a little too big and clunky especially in the chop at the end of the day and on hard surfaces. Granted the QST has a lower and smaller rocker profile in the front and much less rocker in the tail so its not really apples to apples.

My concern with the 190's is they'll be too cumbersome in tight tree terrain. My concern with the 185's is they might not plane up well enough from chopped powder at the end of the day.

Any help is appreciated

I have last year's Nocta, haven't had a chance to get on the Anima. For reference I'm 5'7" 140lbs and ride the 185 mounted +2cm from recommended with the shift.

The ski is a blast, it can be cumbersome in moguls and a little bit so in super tight trees but it's very easy to pivot and maneuver for it's size. I'm not a super hard charging skier, more neutral stance, slashy but I do like to ski fast but don't tend to drive the tips very hard.

I'd go with the 190 in either if you ski aggressively.

They're not so different in size... With the anima you get a tighter radious, which will be bettere in tight tree scenarios, with the nocta you'll get a bit more flotation and bouce because of its rocker only profile, which will never ever sink the tips but wider turns.. with you being farely light, i would go with the taller animas! A little tighter turning radious to help in tree terrain but still wide and tall enough to float well! But anyways, i don't think that 5cm are gonna make you completely hate one pair and love another.. just pick the shorter ones if you love shorter, tighter turns and you think that 190 is too long, or the taller if you like wide turns better and you know they're gonna be a bit harder to turn and stuff imo...

Ps: i never rode the animas, and i only have an old pair of noctas which have completely different specs to the new ones, so I'm talking just by the numbers

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going to probably go with the 185 Nocta. I think it will likely float fine for my size and be more maneuverable in tight terrain. Thanks for chiming in. I think I'd likely be happy with Nocta or Anima but since I have the Atris for hard snow performance the Nocta would probably be a nice light deep option.

I think you'll be very happy with them! I love mine with all my heart, Black crows are special ahah

Can I get your guys opinion on how the nocta & anima feel vs the Corvus? I ride Corvus in 193 and am looking at the nocta vs anima s bodacious vs several others for my pow ski

The flat corvus or the cambered one?

I haven't been on the updated zero camber corvus but compared to the older version the nocta is much softer, looser/surfier. Nocta isn't a noodle but the corvus is pretty burly.

The 2019 that is essentially flat , it’s a stiff hand flex that’s for sure, but soooo much fun, easier to pivot than any cambered ski I e ridden, even soft ones with taper. It’s like, prob perfect ski for me, basically looking for the same shape just wider.

Anima will feel more familiar, really stable ski but still super fun. The nocta is prime for deep days but it’s softer than the anima so you lose a lot of versatility. The anima could easily be a daily ski, it’s got real good edge grip and it’s powerful but not overwhelming. Anima will feel like a more playful corvus

Glad I found this thread... Just bought a pair of Anima 188s to replace my old K2 Obsethed (one of the best skis made btw ;)

The skis have virtually the exact same measurements, with a very similar shape and profile. That said, the Seths could easily butter and transfer edge-to-edge with no tail hang-up due to its shorter camber profile and pretty serious tail rocker. I know the Anima has an elongated radius (& therefor camber), and when compared to the Seth extends back further on the ski so more edge contact further back essentially.

So my biggest question is-will the Anima feel too locked-in if there is such a thing, or does it still maintain the "slarvability" that the Seth boasted?

I'd love to hear your insights. Thanks.
