i noticed alot of you were bitching about whats punk and whats not in the favorite punk sayings thread. so im dedicating this thread to every one that wants to argue about it.

to me punk is 2 separate things, kick ass music and an attitude. and you dont need to like one to like the other. im a hardcore punk fan but you could never tell if you saw me.

i was watching a bioagraphy on the country music channel last night about johnny cash. that guy, as far as attitude towards life was way more 'punk rock' than 95 per cent of 'punk bands' that have ever existed.

Oh my god, I can't believe what i am hearing. What is really punk technically is not around anymore, it's all punk revival. What makes punk punk is that its simple musically and it there is usually a lot of political awareness in their songs. Singing about how people are stereotyped and how punk is not dead, that's punk. Singing about how their girlfriends and what they did last night is not. Blink 182 used to be pretty punk, but now they are so pop-punk it's hilarious. They should let that other guy sing more often. And Good Charlotte is not punk, because even though they dress punk, they completely sell out with their songs in commercials and their names everywhere. Punk is not conforming, and Good Charlotte definitely does not fit the description. The problem is that punk is all underground, and the second a band signs a big-label contract they are considered sell-outs and they are no longer punk. That's why Green Day lost so many fans, and Rancid kept so many. Green Day signed a big-label and Rancid chose to stay with their first label. Whoa boy, look at all that rambling i made!

Actually, Nimrod is probably my favorite Green Day cd. Not including Internation Superhits, which basically takes the best songs from each album. But yeah, if they started making songs like they used to a lot of people would probably get back into them.

Lou Reed and the velvet underground, the pixies, the clash ---- then sex pistols and so on then -----Nofx and shit. all very good i guess(minus sex pistols).

how can you call blink and so on punk when they play pop, its radio music and just stay there, so maybe it might have some 'forbidden beat' but its pop dudes.

real punk (lou reed and mary and the jesus chain )originated from people living in shitty old places and writing sad rweality and puttin it together with there anger and passion for it, in the music, fast etc.

yes the velvet underground were similar to beatles, and gave way to punk, if thats what you want to call them, but that category didn't exist inthe 60's, and yes iggy pop was playing in clubs before the ramones and yes he is punk, but then the ramones came and gave punk its category, hence 'punk' or whatever they didn't call themselves punk at the time, they played rock and roll, and then europe answered with the sucess of the ramones with the sex pistols, and also the clash spawned who were all very good (and punk) and other bands came around, the pixies were just as old, but in my mind not as unfliential as iggy, ramones, velvet underground,and the clash/sex pistols ,... i used to know more about the sex pistols, like how when sid vicious joined he couldn't play for shit at bass, and he just sat around at shows and he spat on stage, and then everyone though that was punk and started to spit on each other,

First of all, DUH! OF COURSE there are subcategories of punk. There's harcore punk (faster and louder), anarachist punk(speaks for itself), new wave punk (slightly more poppy, but not to the extent of Good Charlotte and Simple Plan), post-punk (more artsy and sylish, less simple) and the list goes on and on. However, the essence of punk is stripping music to its roots and inner beauty, and Good Charlotte using a drum machine definitely qualifies as NOT PUNK. Jeeze, i really get caught up in this stuff.
