Bindings: do they do they matter?

look, at the end of the day, all a binding does is connect your boot to your ski. So what is so special about the different types and brands of bindings?

Well a good binding keeps you in, keeps you safe, is not sluggish, and durable. So yeah I'd say it matters.

elasticity

maintenance (brake replacement)

din

^all of these are very important factors. elasticity is how much the binding will allow you to move without releasing. in which you dont want to pre-release, which keeps you safe. if you break a brake, you may want a binding that you can easily replace the brake. Rossi fks are expensive and a pain to replace if you end up breaking one of them. whereas marker and salomon the brake replacement is easy. Din- no need buying jester pros when you and 95% of the population dont need them. get something that isnt to high, but fits your needs. what din do you currently ride at?

examples of good bindings: Marker jester, Griffon (depends on your skiing ability and weight), fks 140, STH2 13or16

Yes bindings matter because the amount of great skis ive seen ruined with shitty bindings over the years makes me sad...

There like boots, you should't let brand dictate which ones you buy, you should buy the correct ones for your weight and ability. For my height and weight my choices are limited to metal bindings with a high din, I've broken enough pairs of 12 din bindings to know this.

My grandpa tells me stories about using two leather straps and a spring as a heel piece for a binding. Skiing would not progress too far with crappy bindings.

Like someone putting squires on fr's yup ive seen that. And they were about 5'11 and had to be at least 140. So example of someone wrecking skis with shit bindings.

With the different brands/models of bindings. you are paying for a few things, the first being durability in most cases as the price increases the durability tends to go up. As the price increases in bindings they also tend to have higher din settings. While a binding does connect your ski to your boot with different bindings you will feel different power transmissions to the ski. for example if you were to try a ski with a plastic binding(such as marker squire or other low cost binding) then try the same ski with a metal/mostly metal binding you would feel the difference.
