Binding gaps?

So I've always noticed when some folks are clicked into their bindings theres a huge gap between the sole of the boot and the ski, between the toe and heel piece. I was wondering if this is the fault of the binding, or the boots? Is there some advantage to being so high off your skis? I've always thought it looked kinda gaper... but maybe I'm just crazy

I know some carving skis have riser plates under the bindings not sure the function of them but i think maybe absorbtion?

Lifters give more leverage for peeps like racers who need it. Also keeps your boots from dragging in the snow if you're over *that* far.

Also raises your center of gravity though, so not so good for Jibbing.

Ya the extra rise gives you more leverage and thus more carving ability, and is better for skiing outside of the park. On park skis, being closer to the ski gives you a lower center of gravity as well as as better feel for what your on (raisl, etc).
