Bilateral Talks with North Korea

Kerry brought this up a few times last night. it was the only thing that i wasn't really sure what it was. someone care to explain?

I believe it refers to having an intermediary for the talks. I think that it would be China in this case but I may be wrong..

these would be talks between just the US and North Korea in regards to North Korea dismantling it's nuclear weapons programs, Kerry wants talks just between the US and North Korea, whereas Bush wants to include many of the Asian powers that surround North Korea for added influence, Bush has already had a meeting with Russia, South Korea, China, and Japan, and another one is planned, i think that multilateral talks, the policy that bush favors, would be more effective because of the fact that all of the other asian powers can influence north korea more than the US alone, the sanctions of Russia and China would mean a lot more than the sanctions of the US alone, and also japan, who is a major trading partner, would have a lot of influence as well, kerry thinks that the US alone can convince north korea to dismantle its weapons programs for a reason that i do not know, but i know that north korea has walked away from bilateral negotiations with the US before

no pajibber, bilateral means only two countries involved in the debate, and multilateral means many countries involved, judging by the prefixes this is easy to determine, bi means two, and multi means many

lineskier, as I understood it, Bush didn't want to talk with NK. He wanted to get the '6 nations' to force them to dismantal, in my opinion, probably with sactions and such. I could be wrong though.

As he put it last night, it seemed as though Bush was against Bilateral talks because it might alienate China and Japan if the U.S. were to eliminate them from the discussion. Truth be told, however, both of those countries have asked directly for the bilateral talks Kerry proposes. So I don't think alienating them is an issue. I think Kerry's plan deserves a shot; a fair number of generals have endorsed it. They sure have to do something.

The concern is (from Bush's side) that if we have bilateral talks, NK can easily walk away from the conversation. But if other countries are involved, NK would have a harder time ignoring a team of countries making the same point. It also would help back the US's mission to disarm NK because the perception is that NK is being extremely unreasonable and we do not have another Iraq situation.

my 2 cents. I think we let china take the lead and support their pressure. we lost credability when we bribed NK with aid and they just built nukes anyway, so now they are just trying to extort more cash from us with threats, and have no intention of changing their policys. let china deal with them, I dont see why the US has to spearhead every global problem then get bashed by everyone for not waiting for the UN to sit on there asses and do nothing. International governing bodies don't work dammit, history has shown that. (can you say league of nations) I feel a UN rant coming on so I'll stop.

I dont think that Bush is necessarily worried about alienating the other countries in the region, he just knows that without assistance NK will do jack shit about changing if the US comes over alone. I think that it is a much better idea to have more people in on the situation. That way we wont be the one holding the bag if shit ever hits the fan. Strength in numbers. Besides, if we went in alone, it could be another situation not unlike the one that we are in right now, 'why didnt _________ (whoever was the president) wait for help? Hes such a dumbass.'

North Korea isn't even going to talk to us until we've had either a change in power or when the Bush administration decides to take its military power seriously. < a parphrased version of an article on the 26th in the New York Times.
