Biking vs. Walking

Does one burn more calories riding a bike than one does walking.

FOR EXAMPLE:

You have to get up a hill to get to class....

Its easier to walk up the hill than it is to bike, but its easier to ride down the hill than it is to walk.

Your thoughts?

Not to mention the shits not given towards cyclists. I love commuting around on my bike, but it is damn dangerous. I do enjoy walks on the other hand.

To burn 185 calories, you could do any of the following: 2

51 mins of walking

21 mins of jogging

15 mins of swimming

28 mins of cycling

[/list]

I prefer to ride bikes. Faster and more efficient. As far as burning calories goes, I'd assume that you would actually burn more calories walking per a set distance, because you cover that distance so much faster on a bike while using less energy (unless you're going ball to the wall Lance Armstrong style 30+mph)

I live right by a huge ass forest (wilderness) so every summer me and my friends bike into the mountains and explore new trails, mountains and spots and stuff. Thats when I get real fit though, and it's second most fun after skiing...

Mountain Biking is so fun!

Biking uses much less energy. And it's quicker, that's why I ride my bike whenever I can to class..

My campus has a huge bike problem, so I am a big proponent of walking. I go to school at USC in downtown Los Angeles. The biggest hill within a 10 block radius of campus is a small 4 ft berm on the side of a quad, making it very easy to bike everywhere. However 90% of student housing is within an easy 10-15 min walk to middle of campus (not that bad in my opinion). Everyone still insists on riding cruiser bikes all the time, and are about as inconsiderate as possible. This occurs not only while riding, but wheelchair ramps and building entrances are consistently blocked by people who don't care where they park their bike. Campus security frequently impounds student's bicycles for doing so. This leads to incessant whining about how "bad" they are because they don't let "ME ride and park MY BIKE wherever and however I WANT TO". This escalated until last year some jokers decided to hold a "protest" where they tried to cause congestion on campus by all riding their bikes at the same time. About 10 people showed up who I now regard as some of the biggest idiots on camps. /rant.

i like riding my bike more than i like driving my car, it's the best. walking works, but riding a bike just feels so good.
