Biking guard vs sleeve

for the people who mountain bike, what’s the difference and is one better than the other? from what i can see and assume, sleeves are just padding over the joint area and guards seem to have a bit of hard covering over the padding, is that right?

Guards are firmer and stronger on impact while sleeves are super low profile and easy to forget you have them on when ur riding

I've had some pretty decent wrecks, but I've never had a wreck where I wished I had one or the other on. I typically ride in short sleeve jerseys or shirts. The one thing I think everyone should where is kneepads.
