Bigger image size and higher res images in M&A? I'd pay for that...

I'm guessing the small image size and low res in M&A is to save bandwith, but it's REALLY annoying and I'm sure I'm not the only one to think that...

How big of an investment would it be to get higher res and bigger images in M&A. If every regular M&A user would pay 10$/year I'm sure we could realize that right?

Support this shit! It's really unbearable to watch any picture basically...

Need moar info. Bigger and more high quality photos = mega win. I'm in huge support of this, and in no way need more money for it.

Help me understand where you need more, and more will be granted if it is in any way possible.

Also, lets discuss the photo section. If M&A is being used becuase the photo section doesn't solve your issues, I'd like to help you out there too.

Photo section is good stuff, but for skiing photos. It is the summer, many of the M&A folk have shifted to doing either paid or busy work while killing time for the season to start back up. So threads like post your best photography, critique threads, and the NS Photographers Cult could all use a boost in quality for the embedded photos.

Right now, you have to click to get a decent color/sharpness/quality render, and the resizer is pretty junky, imo. When an image is larger than your screen size, it will shrink down and scale the image, with no way to 100% zoom and move around the image. If it had a scroll option, that'd be a start!

also, I know this is probably related to something I don't understand, but stick with me for a second. Currently, any embedded image, using the tags, links like this when you right click and copy the image link

http://thumbs.newschoolers.com/index.php?src=http://media.nscdn.com/uploads/member/pictures/1289143946newschoolers_drawing_001.jpg&size=400x1000&size=400x1000

now correct me if i'm wrong, but with a url like that, doesn't it suggest that the image is indexed through NS somehow? and wouldn't that lead to some major issues (taking images longer to load because they go through ns, and making the site have to deal with a large amount of cached images at some point?) I have no idea, but most sites/forums just have the image linked to the original site.

Totally forgot about this thread, but it's still relevant.

I mean that when you post a picture in M&A, the it gets siginificantly downsized and the resolution gets lowered dramatically.

For example, in the 'Your best photography' thread, there's LOTS of great pics that aren't done justice simply because the maximum width of the pictures is capped at 300px, which frankly isn't enough to show pictures. It would be so much better if it got widened to 500px (or even wider).

If you could look into this, I think that would be a GREAT thing.

In the photo section I think the maximum image size (long end) is 600px, which is twice as much and it really makes the pics that much better.

The photo threads (and there aren't many) in M&A are all about constructive criticism and learning from eachother. We can't go uploading every photo seperately in the photo section and check back for comments on every photo; it's pretty necessary to have them all in one thread.

Don't worry, we would have absolutely no intention of charging for something like this. We just want to upgrade the quality of the site so that it is a more useful tool. We use ads to make our money, and that works just fine.

Couple of things here -

1. Could the addition of new photo sections assist in giving a place for this type of stuff? Huge goal of ours is to give ski photographers a place to show their work, so if things can be added to the main photo galleries then that would be awesome. The more we can have photos in photo galleries, the better. We added the shrinking full-size as we felt it was annoying to get something bigger than your screen, but TBH if you photogs want full quality back... then fuck it we can switch it off. If you agree with this statement, please say so, and if you do not do so as well.

2. The reason that the forum images are compressed is that they run through a thumbnailer. this thing has a gazillion settings, but its purpose is to keep the site loading quickly. Without one, you end up loading one thread and there's 2,000 px wide memes all over the place. Loading them from an external source does help bandwidth, but BW isn't a concern of ours. Still though, you're left with potentially extremely long load times for threads.

Now that the new HP is out, we've got a few more small big ticket items that will likely suck most of the dev time down over the next month. We'll start addressing tweaks and long-outstanding bugs as we're at it, then as soon as those things are done we're going to do a large-scale overhaul of everything on the site considered to need work. So continue this discussion about photography nirvana on Newschoolers, and I'll keep adding the good suggestions to our task manager. When time comes to tweak the photo stuff this winter, we'll implement everything that we have decided on together.

Yes, please turn it off! Especially in (or only) in M&A. I'm just fine with 300px wide meme's, but for photo's it doesn't work that way!

I'm sure everyone in M&A would be willing to wait a couple seconds longer for bigger images. I know I would!

I'd like it if it resized it to fit your screen, but you could click it or somehow expand it to make it full resolution. Definitely on pictures in M/A, but I wouldn't care so much on threads. Still it would be nice to be able to have an option to see full res if you want.

I don't see that happening. Just bigger size would be great to start with. Most people have fast internet nowadays so loading times shouldn't be bad. Especially considering this is probably a thing of 5+ (maybe even 10+) years ago. Internet changed a lot since then.
