Hey NS,

I'm gonna be working out at Big Sky this winter and wanna see what everyone thinks of the mountain, advice on necessary gear for a successful winter, and anything else you may want to share about the resort. I'm making the trek out to Montana from New Hampshire so this will be a big change is surroundings. I have skied big mountain in Colorado & Utah so I'm by no means a newb, but I am not a master of the mountain either. Feel free to respond to the thread or send a PM if you have any words of wisdom.

Big Sky kicks ass dude! As far as gear goes you pretty much only need what you'd expect, invest in some pow sticks if you can, and a good skiing backpack. There are a few lines that you need avy gear for (beacon, shovel, probe) but you can still enjoy the hell out of the mountain without them. Oh and try to get your hands on a trail map that has all the smoke shacks marked on it
 
Avy gear is worth it, skiing the couloir is so fun. On a dead day you can just lap that shit.

Pair of rock skis for early season for sure.

A pack you can carry your skis in.

Helmet.

110-118mm is a good daily driver size for BS imo. We dont tend to get massive dumps overnight.

A friend who knows the mountain to guide you to shacks and around the rocks :)
 
WILL TRADE HALF OFF JACKSON HOLE LIFT TIX FOR BIG SKY

fully comp'd passes would be ideal but I'd trade for half offs all day. I know the mountain pretty well and don't want to ski with you unless you do too.

And I may be up for the freeride comp and some other occasions. Holler
 
Anyone in Big Sky or Bozeman that can help me mount some bindings? Dont have any tools, or space..

I have $$ and/or beer for someone willing to help.
 
Montana winters can get even colder than Utah and Colorado winters.. invest in some warm gear.
 
Get warm gear, good low-light lenses, and put warm ass intuition liners in your boots. Dont get rock skis as all of your skis will become rock skis. You'll be blasting rocks in March and April for sure. Prepare for a lot of cold/windy days; especially if you want to ski Moonlight.

Oh yeah low lights are a must. And Moonlight is where it's at
 
Invest in an everyday pack 20-25Liters like a dakine or something solid that has a good ski carry system for all the short hikes. Even on inbounds days when you don't need avy gear, you want to have everythin you need for a full day... water, beer, snacks, extra layer gloves hat lenses, beer and whatever else you carry

Nope. Back in Idaho. South east Idaho that is... will be skiing Pebble Creek mostly, but only 2-3 hours from SLC, Jackson, Targhee, SV, etc., so I'll make some trips hopefully.

Word. Not too far from Big Sky either. I am going to get my Mountain Collective pass so I can ski SV and Jackson quite a bit.

Im actually trying to make a trip up to Big Sky with some buddies.. only like 4-5 hour drive, let's just hope they don't flake on me.

i was going to get a collective pass as well, sadly just don't have the funds this year. I hope it's still around and has good resorts next year! Not sure how all the KSL shit is gonna affect things.
 
i'm getting the montanan pass because i;m cheap and have lots of school work. see you squids up there
 
swooped the montana pass as well cause I'm broke but need something to do over thanksgiving, and park laps have been quite absent from my life for a while. stoked to get back to it before and after the gnarly part of the season falls upon us
 
I'm coming up for Friday 12/1 The $29 ski day. I need as many discount passes for Saturday 12/2 as possible. Our gang will be renting a kickass property and will have live music and DJs kegs whatever all night going on. Lets party. Will trade invites for tickets
 
What are you working? I'm an instructor on the big sky side. There are only a few areas on the mountain where you need a beacon, probe and shovel but if you plan on skiing bridger bowl at all I would recommend buying a beacon. I'm a big park rat so if you ever want to shred you can probably find me in the swifty park.

I’m working in the accounting department and hopefully working evening mostly. I’ll shred park sometimes but I’m really headed to the big mountain...wanna get out and learn the terrain.

I’m headed to big sky from Salt Lake City on Tuesday so if anyone needs a lift, send me a message. Can’t wait to shred with anyone
 
Damn didn't see this thread til now. Sup to the new folk, going on 7 years (holy fuck) working up here, lift maintenance for the last 4. You'll see me cussing at swifty and various lift ops and attempting to drive my snowmobile through the crowded ass base area when the lifts inevitably go down. For everyone hounding about ticket vouchers, they haven't even handed them out yet. Chill out.

I typically have Sunday-tuesday off but I'm working overtime this week cause have so much shit going on at work still. Next weekend I'm down to take some laps though

Ahhh ouch. OT is nice but shredding is much better, especially with the storm that’s brewing meow.

Argh I know. I've just got a lot going on right now. We are so short staffed and putting a new haul rope on the tram this fall set us back so much. The snow is great but it's making the higher ups want more lifts to open that aren't ready on our end. Oh well, we will be done by Xmas I hope. Plus first winter in almost 5 years I haven't lived in town, kinda hard to drag my ass up from Ennis on a day off after working a 65 hour week. Once shit mellows out I can take laps at work though

Ahhh the joys of the start of the season. Considering it’s december 4th, the amount of terrain and lifts spinning is way more than anyone expected. The higher ups should be thankful they have staff like yourself willing to work overtime. Good one you for putting in the time and making sure the season is a success
