BIG CORPORATIONS TURN OFF THE LIGHTS

okay so is it just me or do other people drive around at night and looking at a fucking walmart or staples or whatever, and they have all their lights on, even if its closed. what a waste of electricity. i got two reasons for you why this is bad. for the conservatives out there who are tired of relying on the arabs for oil, if we just learned how to fucking hit the switch, we could become such a more energy efficient country. its so simple yet no politician has the balls to advocate for it. and for us skiiers, obviously global warming is a concern. just look at the east coast this year as an example. it looks like fucking mud season. save skiing and the winter and turn off a damn light or too. sorry if this is a rant, just need to get this out there i feel.

yeap! so many huge buildings leave their lights on 24/7. it's simply because they find it's cheaper to leave the lights on than to hire more night security guards. It's total bullshit, but that's why.

I noticed that the other month at my old school. It was the weekend and most of the lights were on at 3:00am.

yeah, they claim it's for security, but there is no way they need them all on.... how about they install better security systems on their doors and windows. problem solved, turn out the damn lights... i want some damn snow.

my ex gf worked at Ernst & Young in times square. It is a massive building, air conditioning, full lights, and computers on 24/7. I would think its a waste of money but idk what the reasoning is behind it

It's so that the security camera's can see what's going on. If the lights are off, it defies the point of having security camera's.

spend a little extra on night vision cameras? if those aren't realistic, spend a little more on security guards.

....or just leave the lights on all night and pay cents per hour of electricity instead of a yearly salary for more people.

it does annoy me a bit when offices leave lights on all night. I can understand AC (especially for computers) but lights? Not entirely necessary.

I'm not sure you understand one of the fundamentals of running a business.

people cost money. The fewer people, the lower the cost. Not necessarily true of all human positions at companies, but in terms of night watchman etc, it is.

they don't give a shit about saving power. if leaving the lights on means less money spent then they could care less what all the dirty hippie scum of the world thinks.

dude, its still not necessary to have a massive illuminated sign, just get a security system and shut off those lights. the light bill is probably absurd anyways.

Security guards would need the lights on to see where they're going. And as someone else mentioned, there are often janitors and other staff in there at night.

If there isn't anyone in there, they probably dont have ALL the lights on, just the very front bank of lights by the doors to keep robbers away.

The winter isnt just bad on the East Coast. nobody really has much snow but that cannot be immediately attributed to global warming. Dont get me wrong i fucking hate people who think global warming is a hoax and that green energy is for communists and hippies but this could have just been a rare weather pattern.

it's advertising. you pay for a light up sign for a reason. So you can keep that sucker lit up all night.

they have security systems. those, plus leaving lights on is cheaper than hiring people.

this isnt always true. often its just so people realize there is a lowes nearby, which is total bullshit and a very unecessary way of advertising

it's because they are hungry for money they don't even need at the environments expense. I'm aware it would cost more, but there should be regulations on this shit

Stores like wal mart, target, etc. are fully staffed at night. They clean and re stock, use your head... It's basically a 24/7 operation.

a very very select few of these stores charge solar panels during the day and use those to power secondary lights at night. also, as said, most have people working at night to stock them. i used to watch tesco which is a big supermarket chain in england at 3am when we would come back from going out and there would be trucks unloading and people stocking the shelves, and then at 6am when i was biking down to row i would see people stocking more before they opened at 7

Just an FYI - oil doesn't generate electricity.... It'll be coal, gas, nuclear......but I do agree.

not surprisingly theres a shitload of analysis on 'over-illumination' and after skimming thru it Im even more confused why they leave ALL the lights on. This report (it was from 1992 tho) said that lowering lighting levels by 25% can result in savings of 80%

I remember interviewing for a company that specializes in making buildings more efficent with everything from the lighting to the toilets so hopefully the trend catches on

why dont they keep the lights on around the entrances so the cameras can see during the night and turn off the rest of the parking lot?
