Big 1's, then 3's?

Sup guys,

I took way too much time off from skiing, but am getting back into it, and thought I'd ask guys that knew more about it than I did. So, I can throw pretty big 1's without a whole lot of trouble, I'll fuck up every once in a while, but nothing major, but I can't seem to get 3's. Every time I go to throw a 3, I seem to stop at 180. I mean, are 3's that much harder than big ones, cuz i guess some guys think that they are easier. But I dunno, any thoughts... and the standard.. 'don't be a pussy and throw it' goes through my head enough, so that one isn't new advice. Lata..

Yeah I was having that trouble this year, but I was trying to do 3's off small shit, and that wasn't working. I know this sounds a bit stupid but i found it easier to spin hitting bigger tables. You just have so much more time to spin it in the air, and try to get around

The reason that you are stopping 180 in the air is because you aren't leading with your head. When you set up for it and un-wind, your body weight and arms are pushing you 180, but they won't let you make it a full rotation. In a 360, you need to lead the enire spin with your head, and your body will follow. Without committing your head to the spin you may only get 180 / 270 degrees around. That's why 3's are somewhat different than 1's, a 180 is more of a pivot with your hips, where your head can follow, and a 3 is a rotation following your head which leads the spin. Hope this helps, good luck with it.

Sick...

Thanks guys, going up this afternoon, and gonna try that stuff out. That was good, good helpful response. THANKS.

you just have to keep looking for you landing, and your body will want to go there. if you keep your head leading as pollard said, then your body and skis will follow it around.

just keep your head looking down hill if you look back up hill at 180 your rotation is going to stop and 180 is all you are going to get

You just can't stop the rotation's 'form.' Meaning, to stop at 180, you unwind everything, like upper body, to slow and stop your rotation. Fuck style for a while...get your wind up, and spin. Lead with your head as everyone else has said and keep looking over your shoulder. If you still cant get the rotation around, start rotating your skis and legs around too, to FORCE it. I don't really know what else to tell you...I did 360's BEFORE 180s, so I never had the problem. Even though you shouldnt force your skis around cause you might land backseat, you will at least finish the rotation. Once you get used to getting it all the way around, maybe you will be able to lead with your head and do it properly.

Main problem you might be having just from the sound of it though is that you are unwinding and slowing your rotation with your upper body.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

Yea you def gotta lead with your head, but I also learned big 3's before big 1's so I never had the problem either. I found it easier to get the spin down on smaller jumps/rolls in the hill before moving up to bigger ones. Also make sure ur winding up with ur arms to stay balanced, it helps when ur just learning them.

yeah bigass ones are definitely harder than 3's, so at least the more respectable one you're better at!

but really, as someone said, do your first 3 off of a big table, it's honestly twice as easy

i wouldnt say that the size of the jump is as big of a factor as how much time u will have in the air

at my hill we got like 20 foot table tops, but the lips are more like a roller so its really hard to get to the landing

as long as u got around a 20 footer that will get u some air, just do like everybody else said

u might wanna do a few big tricks u know u will land first just to get sort of amped up

thats usually helps me when im trying new things

Id try the 20 first, but if youre comfortable w/ ones over the 45 and you dont need a ridiculous amunt of speed to clear it , go ahead-

switchpollard is brilliant, over anything 25 or more you wont really need to wind up, just look over your sholder-- good luck, tell us how it goes

i was/am having the same problem. first time on the jump i went for a 3 but stomped an almost perfect 180. finally lead with my head and got it all the way around, but didnt quite land it.

Switchpollard, your advice is golden.

All that jive above is valid, strong stuff. i also would like to add that you should try it off of a jump that you know well and doesn't intimidate you in the slightest. I did my first three off of a really small table, it was like 10-15 feet, you really don't need a HUGE jump. Also what was said about form above is correct. Lead with your head follow with your shoulders and stay in that twisted position till you spot your landing, follow your landing with your head and shoulders as you come around so you don't over rotate and you're golden. I had the exact same problem as you when I first attemped to do 3's and it turned out I was trying it off too big of a table and I was leading with my head but not following with my shoulders.
