Best thing I've ever seen posted on YoBeat (extremely relevant to skiing as well)

It's good. I remember when i was new to skiing, well i snowbladed, but I always cared about what i was wearing, i mean what i thought was cool back then was completely different to now, the point is i have always been a 'hipster' in that sense. In fact I was always focused on progression as well, it's just that gradually I have gained a better idea of what I like and how to find the things that inspire me. I don't think the difference between the way i think now and the way i thought 10 years ago on my snowblades is different, i just have more knowledge now.
 
I disagree, while people on NS are many many things, Blatantly Ironic is not one of them.

It seems like there is a lot of hate on newcomers to the sport on here, but really, the only people who get destroyed deserve it. the hate recievers are ignorant, or disrespectful, or any combination of whiny, entitled, take your pick. people who are "joeys" can find a lot of support here if they go about it the right way
 
that article seemed to be less about "core" riders not wanting to be "joeys," and more about the author not wanting to be classified as a hipster
 
The yobeat article took a clever and interesting idea about irony from the original times article, and somehow twisted it into being nice to gapers. There is really no connection between the two things. Yes snowboarding and skiing can be over concerned with image, but that in itself is not ironic.

Yes, you'll see the occasional ironic moustache, and heshers/bums basically dressing in costumes, but skiing is one of the sports that is more joyful, open, and unconcerned with irony.

Even our most ironic of events, gaper day, is less negatively or defensively ironic because it actively and happily mocks the styles of the past, rather than appropriating them as cool. It's a fancy dress day for fun, rather than the fancy dress being cool (which is what's happened in skating).

So no, not a very good article from yobeat, a nice sentiment, but unrelated to irony.
 
I thought most people that were older then 18 understood this, who gives a shit what other people do, just have a good time and don't make fun of or try and stop others who are just trying to have fun too.

Then again I suppose we would live in a much better world now if that was true.
 
Its up to you to change this type of behavior. Don't tolerate it, and set examples for others by helping out the newcomers.

The real fact is that the n00bz and weekend warriors on the hill are really the ones that keep the ski industry going.
 
great read, it could not be more true. all i see these days are kids trying to look as good as possible and get as many shots as possible. it seems as though kids have forgotten why they started skiing in the first place (because its so damn fun) and all they care about is getting the shot so they can be sponsored.
 
not really sure what that link has to do with this, i just feel like it was a great read because people take skiing and snowboarding way too serious these days
