Best ski shop in Tahoe/reno??

everyone will say something different for this one, but in reno, i'd say bobo's. in north lake i'd go with porters even though they fuck up mount jobs like no other. best bet = porters.

RMS next to Bobos, those guys get shit done right, and they are usually down with a 6 pack for a mount, way better than any other places Ive gone.

I always used to say Porters but the Tahoe City store fucked up on 2 different mounting jobs last season for me... the Incline store seems to have the best shop guys

Porters all the way. The Incline store is very well organized and the manager has been with Porters for 10 years. The company itself carries a great selection too. Check out porterstahoe.com or swing by the Incline store this weekend for their huge tent sale on 2007 winter hard and soft goods. Next weekend the tent sale will be in Truckee.

porters is legit, RMS is fucking expensive and lame.

Bobo fucks up mount jobs if you dont make them write down what you want done. other than that there pretty legit. I get mad discounts

check out the sports exchange in truckee this year. that shop is actually sick as hell and has a ton of freestyle ski shit. n a ton of backcountry gear. n a huge indoor climbing gym, and they sell used everything, and kayaks, camping, and climbing shit. and most of their skis are way cheaper than porters. and they sell moment

Shoreline Sports - South Lake

shorelineoftahoe.com

more board, but since i started working there. Me and my friend dan have gotten our shop to carry LINE, LIBerty and LIB TECH SKIS.

no boots yet, we have lib tech binders now too. they are basically look bindings.

are you high? yes sports exchange has cheaper prices b/c its always over a season old (I am pretty sure Porters has an outlet store in tahoe City)... oh and since its called the Sports exchange make sure your gear hasn't seen too many miles before you buy it. Oh and make sure you try the climbing wall or buy a frisbee golf disc.

Ah, sports exchange sells new skis too, in fact I think they probably have more new stuff then used.

for the freshest clothes check out porters in tahoe, i got my venom jacket from tahoe city

bobos is pretty legit too, if you like the snowboarding/skater style Out of Bounds boardshop has some good clothes

for skis i would go to porters or bobos but neither has good prices. for clothes for sure go to out of bounds board shop. they have the best deals and the people their are really cool.

As far as really good deals, nowhere in Tahoe has a good price. Its all top dollar. Think about it.. its right there!, they can charge what they want, cuz thats what it will sell for.

Go to a smaller shop down in Sac or the Bay Area, or hell, even in Reno i see better deals.

i just compared prices of skis between porters and sports exchange and every twintip was at least $100 more at porters

It's on west river road, like four stores down from the Tait's shop. The sports exchange guys are super chill and they do have newer stuff. Oh, and I'm stoked cause I just found a pair used pair of barely-used Rossi FKS 155s for $50 in the back. Well, I think the place is legit as hell.

Mukluk - whoever you are (I'm a pre-cougar who has been around the block and back in Tahoe and am tired of half-truths and lies on these forums) - you obviously either work at Sports Exchange or work for Moment or something. Of your only three "friends" on your profile, two of them - TJohnson and *THEDEANE* - both replied to this thread. Coincidence? Maybe you're all really the same person??? Anyway, since I've been around the ski industry all of my life let me educate you and whoever else is reading this (that goes for you DingoSean and GotSteaz). Prices on NEW 07/08 skis - Porters, Bobos, RMS, a shop in Sac, wherever - ARE ALWAYS MARKED AT THE SAME PRICE. K2 or Line or Armada or any "big" company DICTATES to the shop what is called the "minimum advertised price" or MAP. A shop CANNOT sell a ski below MAP or risk getting in trouble with the brand. Do shops do it sometimes? Yes. But you're an uneducated fool if you think the sticker price on a new K2 Hell Bent is going to be "cheaper" at a shop in Reno or Sac than in Tahoe. Now that DOESN'T MEAN that you can't negotiate one-on-one with a shop and have them sell it to you below MAP, but all shops price their stuff THE SAME!! My point here is not to defend Porters or Bobos or talk bad about Sports Exchange or whoever - just to educate you boys. Now if you're a true local on the North Shore you can get a 10% local's discount at Porters, Totally Board, Taits, and Daves. I don't think that you can at the Chief, SVSS, or the Loft. Not sure of Sports Exchange but I've met the owner before and locals only have nice things to say about him and I assume that they would give a local's discount too. But you're straight LYING Mukluk when you say EVERY twin tip was at least $100 more at Porters. If Sports Exchange and Porters have the IDENTICAL 07/08 brand, model, and size ski, the sticker price on both WILL BE THE SAME.....PERIOD. Again, local's discount, or bro deals, or constant negotiating (especially if we have another winter in Tahoe like last years) can allow you to pay less than MAP, but a K2 Hell Bent is priced the same in Reno as in Tahoe as in Sac as at Porters as at Bobos as at Sports Exchange.

Thank you for the enlightening information. By the way, pre-cougar, they are three different people.

I know....I know. Sometimes we chicks get accused of being a little dramatic, ya know? The point being that they all seemed to be a little BIASED for Moment skis and/or Sports Exchange. Connect the dots was all I was really getting at......educate yourself and don't trust people with hidden agendas.

And can I quote myself??? Long time listner first time caller as they say so I'm new to this. But wanted to say that the point wasn't anything bad about Moment or Sports Exchange, just dig a little deeper to see WHY people are saying what they are saying on here. There is some type of connection going on with the Porters bashing and talking up Sports Exchange / Moment. Once again, I have NEVER heard anything bad about Sports Exchange......and the new Moment stuff looks sick. I'd love to try a pair of the Sierras actually. And props to them for making their dreams happen. The often lame ski industry needs more companies / people like Moment. What we don't need is Mukluk lying about shit though.....

Hey lenzner.....see that your profile says you're in Tahoe. I thought the Aeryx stuff was dope too. I heard, though, that it's no more? It was tied to Predator and they're kaput now from what I understand....I mean the outlet just south of TC is closed now???

I promise you my shop will beat any of their prices by 5%. Period. Regardless of the brand, regardless of what that ski is at cost. We've done it to REI about 100 times since i've worked there. Its our policy to beat the price, and its simple buisness.

Yeah, of course going under cost is going to devalue the product, but do it in moderation and its cool.

For example... up in Tahoe, I saw hellbents for 800. flat. Thats MSRP from what I believe. My store? we have them for 6 hundo, and is going to stay that way permenantly. Its still above cost, which is probably at about 500, and next year, if they dont sell this year, i'm sure they will go down to about 5% above coast.

Now, you're definitely correct about Porters and Sports exchange having the same prices for new skis, but for last years models? I dont see them being spot on. I've seen plenty of different shops with prices that are far different all over california. For example, I went to Sierra Snow and Patio in Roseville or sac or whatever about 2 weeks ago, and they had a pair of last years Dogens for 2 hundo... thats DEFINITELY at or just above cost, if not below it. Granted, its a ski they didnt come out again with this season, but still... I go to Norski in Lafayette the next week? I see them for 350 "on sale". They msrp at 5 hund. A better example perhaps? Same two stores. Norski has the invaders from last year for 299. Sierra has it for 199.

Sure, the lowest price you can go may be dicated by the company, but that doesnt mean the actual price that the store sells the product for is going to be the same in every store. As long as its above cost, a company can do whatever the hell they want. Its called competition. If a store is selling their skis for 450, and another is for 475, if they dont price match it, AND beat it? they they arent what I would call a seriously legit shop.

Thats my 2 cents.

Hey Dingo Sean - glad to see you've got cajones to answer back to a chick! I like cajones!! Ummmm....maybe that's why I'm happily waiting just a few more years to receive my full cougar status...ha!!

OK, back to truth though boys. Listen all. There's a DIFFERENCE between a shop being able to "beat other prices" versus WHAT THE STICKER PRICE ON THE SKI says. All I'm saying is that any shop WORTH A SHIT is going to have the same price on that little sticker on the ski (hold on....more on that shortly).

But DingoSean does bring up this stupid, dirty little fact about the ski industry that's different than snowboards. It's kinda like a car dealership. The manufacturer's have this antiquated bullshit called "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price" - or MSRP. That's the crazy price you see in all the ski magazines with their gear guides. What they should put is the MAP price like I described earlier cuz THAT'S THE PRICE that the industry calls the "street price." And the shop that you saw Hell Bents for the ridiculous MSRP price of $800?? Probably Squaw Valley Sports Shop because.....well.....they're antiquated and don't have anything "new" school about them. Or maybe the Chief. Same story.

Hell Bents at Porters? 649. Hell Bents at Tramdock? 649. Hell Bents at EvoGear? 649 Sorry...couldn't find Hell Bents at Sierra??? And can't even shop online at Nor-Ski or Any Mountain (where I assume that you work DingoSean).

So DingoSean, I do apologize that I didn't clarify the difference between MSRP and MAP. And yes - there are still a handful of lame and gay shops (usually right at the base of a resort or in Vail or Aspen or other foofie places that will be stupid enough to price skis at MSRP. But they have NOTHING to do with cool, newschooler-type shops.

But almost as lame are the shops like - sorry to call out Sierra cuz they do have good deals - that say the "price" is $800 and put a slash through it and then either say "sale price" or "our price" is $649. Bullshit. Shame on those shops for even hinting that they're "giving you a break"....like "our price" is different than another cool, newschooler-type shop.

Example of two good online shops? Tramdock (same thing as backcountry if you didn't know) and PortersTahoe. Neither put $800 as the MSRP and did the stupid slash thru price to $649 like it's on sale. Check it.....

Oh, and one other thing DingoSean. After about February 1st of every season is when the MAP restrictions end. So that's when you might see differences in marked prices on Hell Bents between shops. And once you're talking about "last years" stuff.....of course any shop can have any price. My point to all of this as I said in my first post was NEW, 07/08 skis for the same brand, model, and size will be the same price till Feb 1 - at Porters, Bobos, Sports Exchange, Sierra, and Any Mountain. I wasn't including non newschool shops because who shops there anyway???

Did you get some patio furniture while you were there? I'm sure they've got some screaming deals plastic chairs and tables.. support your local shops!

Word. Ultimately you put another spin on this whole thing which in a way was my point to begin with and why I typed as much as I did last night. With as much machismo and testosterone as there is on this site, from a chicks perspective, I question where's the loyalty and why do so many people have to have it always be about price? As long as you're not getting screwed like my MSRP / MAP bullshit example, all good cool, newschooler shops should be the same price on 07/08 stuff through February 1st. Support them. Support Porters - i know who the owner is and he's just a 30-something year old really passionate guy with no lazy, rich money behind him. Support Sports Exchange - they're cool too. Support our other true local businesses like Daves or Totally Board. Support Out of Bounds in Reno and Carson City. They ALL work hard and CARE about skiing and snowboarding.

Haha. Okay, you're exactly right, that is where I saw the 800 quid bents, and that was at Chief, and it was a while back, so now that i think about it, they might have even dropped prices since then, so who knows. I didnt get a chance to check out Porters or exchange last time I was up there in Oct, so I didnt get a chance to see their fill.

and yes, you did sorta confuse me with MAP and MSRP. Either that or I just wasnt thinking straight in my head, and made myself think they were one in the same or something of that nature.

For some clarification, Nor-Ski and Any Mountain are two of the larger, competing stores in the Bay Area. Any Mountain is run by SSV, and Nor-Ski is run out of some other retail division... SSV stores are part of Vail/Heavenly's retail division, so if youre so curious to know prices, just check out Heavenly's ski shop prices if your ever in SLT.. they should be the same.. I'd think.. and hope.. All I know is that right now we have the hellbents for 600 even, and I highly doubt that price is going to change either.

I have no clue how to check Nor-Ski's prices online... so whatever haha. They arent very legit about some things during prime selling season.. except, they have ridiculus sales once the season is over, and they sell off everything they still have at whatever it cost them to get it, or maybe a small small percentage more, just to make at least a slight profit if any. Every time I've been in there though, its always some snowboarder that knows about as much about skis as he knows about the nation of Eritrea... which I'm going to assume is nothing at this moment.

Either way, the ethics, economics, and jargen of retail world suck ass...

However, the perks, discounts, and free shit are theee best.

Dang, and I thought I was Capt. Rant in the Cali forums... Thanks for the correction - noted and officially informed.
