So I managed to cop a free flight anywhere in the world..where to go? I want to ski big powder, in-bounds since I'm rolling solo..and possible in August. South America, Chile? Any and all advice.

South America. I'd go to Chile. I wouldn't necessarily call it the best ski destination in the world (although arguably it is in August), but you can't go wrong with powder in July and August. 'Nuff said.

Sorry for the double post. I've gotta add to this.

Look at resorts like La Parva, Valle Nevado and Portillo.

Las Lenas has over 4 thousand feet of the gnarliest terrain you've ever skied. If the weather and the snow are good its possibly the best lift serviced terrain in the world. If the snow is bad and the Marte lift is shut down (which it often is) it's small and remote and the there isn't a lot to do but drink.

no. NZ is sick since for you guys since its in summer, but the skiing in North America and Japan is sooo much better. My vote is Japan/ USA or Canada

There's supposedly at least 400 areas/resorts in North America.

But it's gotta be possible to ski them all in a lifetime. Considering the number in Europe, you'd be spending most of your time there. Heck, I'd do it if I had funding.

If you wanted to ski every ski area/resort (not just the ones that are currently open), that would be harder. Apparently, at one time there were as many as 800 ski areas.resorts in North America. You'd be shocked by how many there were alone in the Northeast - NELSAP.org can show you that. It's insane.

I was bored so I went to goski.com which supposedly lists all the ski places in each state

Michigan has the most at 41, then NY with 37, then PA with 32 then CA at 28.

In total there are 429 in the US

If anyone want to find out the worldwide number you can count them here, if you truly want to find out

http://goski.com/world_index.html

Most in US with 429, then France with 232 then Canada with 165

In total there are 1,794.

wow I just spent way too much time looking and adding the numbers up.

^500 in japan
But to the thread, Cerro Cathedra' has legit riding, especially if you skin (they have a refugio system) plus its right by a really cool town, not in the middle of nowhere (like las leñas or portillo). If you want the best riding, go to Las Leñas, but if you want a better overall experience for less money, Bariloche is awesome. imo

Definitely go somewhere that gets shat on with good snow and make sure the US dollar goes far. The farther the dollar goes, the longer you can stay there. I would cancel any part of Europe, and unfortunately Japan, out of option, unless you want to end up spending a fair amount of money. Valle Nevado looks so fun, Chile in general is a good place. If you are going somewhere this summer, definitely do South America.

Bariloche (Cerro Catedral), Argentina

and to a lesser extent Las Lenas or Valle Nevado-La Parva-El Colorado.

South America is a lot better than New Zealand.

japan was amazing, but since you want to go in august go to south america. portillo is supposed to be very nice

This can't be true, both Italy and Japan have over 500 resorts.

Also, all ski resorts of Colorado combined could fit inside one French or Italian megaresort. Heck, all resorts of the USA combined could fit inside the Dolomiti Superski area in Italy. Easily. 300'000 skiable acres.

good point.

I guess the guy could just ski the best resorts in each region of the world (after consulting with locals what the best is), and base his conclusion on that. That would be a nice, realistic goal in life, to ski every skiable region of the world.

You are right. 99% of this site has no point of comparison, so all the answers will be mostly preference. But limiting the time frame to August, your options are:

- indoor

- glaciers / summer camps

- Chile / Argentina

- South Africa

- Australia

- New Zealand.

*claim* Having skied indoor in Belgium and Holland, skied on glaciers in France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria, having traveled to New Zealand and Argentina, my vote would go to Argentina for best ski destination. As best travel destination, New Zealand is also a strong contender.

He asked in AUGUST where should i go....I noticed someone said Alaska....it's summer in the northern hemisphere asshole.

To answer the Q tho. Portillo, Chile

^^ in august people , unless japan has some glaciers i'm not aware of, it might be a long wait for the lifts to start turning.

Parents won two tickets in a raffle, and they're not usin em.. I'm going to look into Portillo, and Chile. Keep passin tips if you can!

Come to Chile you wont regret it, plus this year we will have El Niño, wich is a hot water corrent that goes in the pacific ocean, so we will have ton of powder days this season

No to NZ, If anyone has actually been there they know that the snow sucks in most places, like the east coast.. We all know UT has the best snow on earth.
