Best school for skiing out of these EC ones? help please

actually try more like an hour from stowe and sugarbush and an hour an half from jay. but uvm is great because there are tons of skiing options.

as far as acadmics go UVM is actually a pretty good school, I mean the have a med school and their sciences programs and business school is pretty good

I actually live about 10 minutes from colby and during lunch at highschool we would sneak into the caf and have free lunch. the food is amazing, and i hear that the school is really good. Normally it shouldnt take much more than an hour to get the sugarloaf, i think our record was 45 min. Its the closest of the 3 mountain.

there are some great schools in NY. unfortunately the skiing that you will encounter will be shorter seasons and way smaller hills (with a few exceptions). I researched a ton of schools throughout the state when i was making my decision a few years ago. naturally NY will not even be an option if you are looking for the best skiing, but there are exceptional school here and i can shed some light on them for you if you'd like. just shoot me a PM if you want some more info.

I went through this exact same decision making process just a little over a year ago. I'll preface by saying that I go to UVM and I love it. I applied to a lot of the "higher tier academic schools" colby, hamilton, colgate, midd, bates. I also applied to UBC, UVM and UVA (not ski related, obviously). I didn't get into Midd and did get into the rest (or waitlisted I think at Hamilton?). Anyways, when I was applying to schools I thought I needed to go to a small private school in order to get a good education. But when it came down to decision time I ended up choosing between UVM, UBC and UVA. In the end UVM won out because of several reasons. It has one of the best environmental programs in the country. I am in the honors program which looks good. And the academics are highly underrated because of the schools reputation as a party/weed school. Any university is what you make out of it.
Good luck, bud. The skiing is great up here.

look into UBC. and as far as middle tier schools vs. uppertier, in the long run it's not that big a deal, it only makes a difference your firt couple years after you graduate, and you could always go to a better school for grad school. UW is a better school than UVM and UNH to begin with...it all depends what you want to do. what majors are you interested in? that might help. if you want to be in med school, you'd be shooting yourself in the foot going anywhere but UW (2nd ranked med school in the country)

go to uvm. Burlington is mad chill, and they do free transportation to smugglers notch on weekend days

wow, if you want liberal arts, look into colorado college, nice campus, a bunch of cool kids (though the springs isn't the best, but whatever) and you have the back way to breck on 24, and Breck>anything on the east coast. also the block schedule where you take one course at a time is actually really cool, all the friends i have that go there love it, and the best part is, if you have a class or teacher you dont like its done in a couple weeks anyway, and you get to focus on one class at a time.

UofU! so it's not a "good" school, but it's decent and if you really care about education these days you'll be heading to grad school afterwards anyway so where you went for undergrad wont mean shit (as long as you do well enough to get into good grad school I suppose). And while you're at the U you'll have a ballin 4 (or 5, or 6) years and some of the best skiing out there. I guess you probably wont even consider it since I'm guessing you haven't visited there or anything, but I transferred there without visiting and am pumped to be going back tomorrow.

UVM!

Colby is so lame- no one skis park and most of them are stuck up snobs whose "home resort" is in the ALPS or aspen even though they live 20 mins outside of Boston. LAME SAUCE!

My advice- UVM IS THE SHIT

plymouth state university, NH is probably one of the best in my opinion. it's soo close to a bunch of mtns...and plus loon has been amazing the past 3 yrs and it's 20 min away. u can arrange your classes around your skiing, and go just about everyday if you want.

yeah im gonna hav to agree with titlol on that....haha vinny wtf kind of name is that? U of U is the best choice for everything overall. good state school w/ lots of majors and the best skiing around. i mean U of Vermont is good but its so godam pricey its not even funny and the resorts obviously dont compare to U of U, so might as well just spurlge with the airfares back and forth to goto U of U.

dude, st mikes, uvm or LYNDON STATE

15 minuits from jay peak AND free seasons pass to this rediculous small mountain in town

pretty good as far as i know. i haven't looked into the grad programs that much yet because I will only be a sophomore this year but both the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, which is the college i'm in (http://www.uvm.edu/~envnr )and the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics (http://www.uvm.edu/giee ) have environmental grad programs. you should check it out.

actually champlain is alot more legit than you think. I mean...if you like skiing, thought provoking classes, and jumping into your major right off the bat its perfect.

P.S. Jeff Curry goes there and hes in Meatheads movies this year! Go to school with a pro skier!! omg!

Didn't like reed, but that's more toward the academics I'd want. LC is a safety school for me. Not nearly as good as any of the schools I mentioned except for maybe Boston U.

Skiing comes 2nd for me when I look at schools, maybe even 3rd. Academics and study abroad/research opportunities come first and second. Colorado college is on my list though. same with UC boulder. but CC isn't as close to skiing as you'd think, I'm pretty sure. I know nothing about U denver.

I'm going to probably apply early decision for Bates, or maybe Colgate. Just toured colgate and hamilton today...colgate is ridiculous. love it.

Ya dude like some others were saying, fuck the east coast.

You gotta sack up, and head out west. Prettier bitches, taller mountains, more snow. The only ice you see out here they sell outside the gas station in a bag.

UofU, westminster, colorado, washington, peep that shit

Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, closest college to Loon and Waterville. Loon has a sick park plus its right up there in the white mountains. (Wildcat, Attitash, Cranmore)

actually CC isnt that far to skiing, do a little research, you get to completely avoid I70 and take the back way to breck, so the time taking 24 to 9 is more than made up for compared to the time you'd spend in traffic from boulder or denver. i'd say it only takes 2 hours max, i dont know where google maps gets 2 and half.

uvm is straight up the illest school on the east coast.... its not really an opinion, just is

st mikes fuckin blows i would rather not go to college than go there

I'm applying to Lewis and Clark, UW, UBC, and Colorado College, all of which are very far west of the Appalachian mountain range.

boston college is such an amazing school. my cousin goes there, but i would never consider it because theres probably even shittier skiing there than around where i live in the jersey/pa area.

fuck. answer my question dont tell me which school to go to on the west coast, the thread is specifically about EAST COAST schools the ones that I mentioned

my brah goes to BC, and he skies like once a year, no mounatians anywhere close. BU is like 5 mins from BC so yeah. poop on dat nigga

Go to school in Burlington. I went to UVM and loved it. UVM always ranks high on professor-student relationships. Out of my 4 years there.I can only think of a couple professors that weren't willing to meet with you at anytime, and really help you out. Good, helpful, available professors is a huge asset. Programs such as the med and enviro ones are also some of the best in country. On top of that, Burlington is close to best skiing on the east coast, without a doubt. Stowe, Smuggs, MRG, Bolton and Sugarbush are all within 45mins, and Jay is only a little more than a hour. Pretty much everyone skis/snowboards and there are a ton of ski related events year round (railjams, movie premiers, etc.). Real good scene. Not to mention tons of parties and easy to find highgrade. There are a lot of good schools near skiing, but its hard to find a college town on the east coast more fun and into skiing than Burlington.

HAhah I hope you don't mean farmington...

It's weird when people come to Maine for school.. I've always wanted to get the fuck out of here.. I plan on moving out west ASAP. However, Colby and Bates do have very good reputations and are the best picks for a private school up here. If you do go to either one, you'll have the options of Sunday River/Sugarloaf/maybe Loon if you wanna take the trek. The skiings decent, but its the EC so you can't expect too much. As for the area... well.. if you've already seen Maine and you like it, theres not much else to say.. I get bored after a while but maybe out of state kids like it better.
