i would also say led zep. they are so diverse its not even funny. if there was one band i had to choose to take its discography to a remote island, led zep would be my choice.
 
no such thing. There are so many bands good for different reasons. Influence on music, influence on culture, straight fire, so much to it.

Can't put my finger on one band.

 
I love floyd, my favorite band. But I can't say they're the best band.

The beatles had a ton of influence on rock music, but I can't say they're the best band.

The dead had a huge impact on culture and jam music, can't pick them though.

Zep isn't even progonal so I can't pick them.

Even the hendrix experience.

Way too many factors to pick the best. In our personal feeling?(which is still hard) From a world view? Impacts?

my favorites range from boston to pink floyd, to zep, to grateful dead, to the beatles and then to gnr and back again
 
Def should be one of the first on the list....

But also the Who, Stones, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses, Oasis, Kasabian, Tom Petty and the heartbreakers (unbelievably good live, which is why they're on the list), the clash and Led Zep...
 
I think you should make categories as to what the best is.

based off most original, best instrumentally/technical, success on tours, best live, even of different decades (early rock, classic, modern music), and things like that.

Too many great bands with different effects. The Beatles were just an unstoppable cultural phenomenon, while other bands were just as good, but didn't generate the same kind of publicity as the beatles. I can't think of any band before or after that had the same effect the beatles had.

me personally though, I'd throw Queen down as being my favorite. Freddie Mercury had the voice of a God. One of the few bands where I can literally listen to every song through and love each one.

I was pointing out how you can't compare certain aspects of major bands. I didn't say the beatles were best, I said they had an unheard of cultural effect. So in terms of social impact, they were bigger.

Might be a good idea to see which bands are mentioned most once this thread has enough replies, that way we at least get the NS majority's opinion of the best rock band.

I say Led Zep, The Who, Queen...although the second i post this i'll regret my choices.
 
I fucking love zeppelin, but it's not like they changed up their music very much, the Beatles were way better at changing their shit up, but as for OP, I would for sure say that Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, and Queen were easily the best

I'm sorry that you feel that way. Arena rock is not the pinnacle of rock. I like Rush, but I sincerely hope you are joking haha.

Rolling Stones -- if I absolutely HAD to pick one, it'd be them, but... it really can't be narrowed to one.

Cream -- Eric Clapton at his best.

Derek and the Dominoes -- Eric Clapton and Duane Allman at THEIR best... yikes.

Grateful Dead -- One of the biggest cultural movements in rock music, ever. Not to mention that Garcia is God's brother.

Led Zeppelin -- Original? No. Kickass? #1.

Hendrix Experience -- Don't really need an explanation...

The Yardbirds -- Some of the best guitarists of all time came from this band, not to mention their influence on rock to come.

 
how is rush arena rock?...i don't wanna hate but you listed zeppelin, stones which are considered "arena rock", rush is in my opinion the best rock band because of the fact that they where (and are) always about the music, they where never influenced by what the recording companies or popular music wanted them to be, they always did their own thing and they literally reinvented themselves musically every 1-2 albums and it was always amazing, and love it or hate it, rush has some of the most meaningful lyrics in rock music hands down.
If you don't think rush is the best band then thats fine but you don't have to be a prick just because other people have different opinions on music than you.
