Best resort for kids and myself

Hey Guys,

Been doing some trips up this winter to Northstar. I'm looking to next season and for a resort that would satisfy myself and my two older kids (6 and 3). I need a place with a good development team and a place that I would enjoy riding while they are doing their thing. Squaw is out-too much cost at this point. Narrowed it down to Northstar and Alpine...any thoughts? Thanks.

Alpine has everything. Best bang for your buck in the basin. plus its cheaper, and less touristy than almost everywhere else.

Good school, kids program, next level terrain, close parking.

I coach for Squaw's big mountain team and even tho squaws not actually that expensive anymore if you buy your passes in may, you should still go to alpine. They've got a pretty good kids program from what I gather, good terrain without the hoopla of squaw. We have over 1000 kids on or ski team so it is a bit of a junk show at times.

Thanks for all of the feedback...looks like people prefer Alpine over Northstar....any reason(s) as to why?

Thanks.

northstar is flat, and is a complete touristy shit show. It is super crowded, and the parking is far away. also it is super expensive. by far and away the most overrated resort in the west- ya im going that far.

Alpine is great because it has awsome long intermediate groomers for the family, but it has alot of terrain where you can get as gnarly as you want as well. It is also one of the cheaper places. It isnt nearly as crowded, and the vibe is much more mellow and friendly.

oh and alpine will run their lifts in high winds while others will shut them down on wind hold. but alpine does recieve higher than average winds, but they will run them in sustained 50mph winds...which is nice

China Peak is a great family resort. It's not a huge Tahoe resort where kids can get lost or overwhelmed, and prices are cheap compared to other major resorts. There's a ski team and kids camp, where you can leave you kids in an all day lesson that includes lunch and supervision.

people who know how to ski well dont ride there because the want to, they ride there because they have to. for $10 more you could ski an actual mtn, will still being able to drop the kiddies off at a really good program.

why would you ski china peaks if you didnt have to. btw $59 for a ticket isnt cheap...

Well then it's a good thing the OP wasn't asking where pro-skiers should go. They were asking what's a good mountain for young kids and family. And that's what China Peak is. And when you have a family you're trying to provide for, an extra 10 dollars per ticket per day ads up.

and btw, $59 IS cheap in comparison to most resorts in in CA:

Northstar: $78

Kirkwood: $76

Heavenly: $78

Mammoth: $92

Squaw: $88

no he actually asked where was a good mtn with a good kids program and good terrain for him to ski while the kiddies are in ski school and stuff.

And BTW if you get Alpine tickets at certain stores like REI and Sports Basement, you get them for $59.

Im sure you have tons of fun at China Peak, Im sure you live close to it.

But if it was a 3+ hour trip to either China Peak or Alpine, and both have comparable prices, which would you choose?
