Best point/shoot digital camera ?

canons are really nice, and you can change the settings around really easily for "program" mode

canons generally have pretty decent sensors in them. Don't get too hung up on the Mp count, because a shitty 10Mp sensor will take worse photos than a good quality 6Mp sensor. Also, for most people somewhere around 3 or 4 mp is fine.

If you're going to be shooting sports or low light with it you'll probably want a reasonably high ISO to allow you to shoot faster

save up, canon g10... pretty much a DSLR in a point and shoot body

spend your 300 bucks on the new GoPro Wide angle helmet cam, it shoots in full HD (1080p) and makes 4MP images, + you can make sweet timelapses if you set it to take a picture every 4sec. or so....
oh and its waterproof
