Best places to ski in Austria

I'm spending a semester abroad in Budapest, Hungary and I really want to use one of the long weekends I have to go skiing in the alps. I figure that Austria is my best bet as its closest to Hungary. I have no idea where to start looking or even when the snow starts falling in the alps.

Any help you can give me will be much appreciated!
 
I'm looking for some advice on where to go this winter too. I'm living in Vienna right now, but I'd love to join you for a weekend skiing, we could split some costs or whatever. I might be making a trip to Budapest sometime this fall, it'd be sick to meet up or let me know if you're ever in Vienna.
 
hej guys, i'm from a place near kitzbühl, ski a lot by only in my region... if you just want to go skiing there are many huge resorts everywhere in tyrol and salzburg, the bigger ones which i prefer are in kitzbühl/pass thurn, saalbach/hinterglemm, hopfgarten/ellmau/söll and of course in the zillertal in mayrhofen, fügen and hintertux.if you are looking for some freestyle parks there are some quite cool ones in pass thurn/kitzbühl, in mayrhofen and in hintertux, but the last one in hintertux is sometimes closed because of the glacier, its sometimes too cold or stormy in the wintermonths.

and if you are looking for some cool spots for freeriding kitzbühl and fieberbrunn is a good choice

 
s_a_m$ How are you liking Vienna? Some friends of mine and I are planning a trip there in late November/early December - I guess the city is beautiful getting close to Christmas time. I'd be down to show you some good stuff in Budapest. The nightlife here is crazy, so many bars and the Hungarians drink at all times of the day - it's crazy.

specialguest: Thanks for naming off some good resorts. I've only heard of a few but I'll check those out. I'm assuming that there are but...are there good places to rent skis/boots near most of those resorts? I didn't bring any of my gear with my so I have to rent everything. Hoping to try out some newish powder skis as I don't get to ski powder much on the east coast (by much I mean never).

I was thinking about checking out Innsbruck but supposedly the mountains there don't have a lot of advanced terrain? I read that on a review of the area and I was kind of surprised. I'm not so sure I believe that but have you heard anything like that before?
 
Austria has a lot of ski resorts and some of them are really big. Where to go is totally related to what you seek from a resort. My favourite region in the Austrian Alps is Arlberg.

Warth-Schröcken is actually in Arlberg but it's a small resort nearby resorts Lech,Zurs,Zug and St Anton are all served by one ski pass and those places especially St Anton are considered to be some of the best for Freeride.As a result they attract lots of young people and there is lots of apres ski life.Even more St Anton has a a park in the area Rendl which is not a vast one but a medium sized, with some really bi jumps and without a half pipe check videos on youtube.Lech also has a medium park.So if it is for having fun lots of freeride and some park Arlberg and St anton especially is The Place.

As previously mentioned this combination can also be achieved in Kitzbuhel but with less freeride stuff but a bigget park.The DC park it's pretty big. However Kitzbuhel is a short mountainand may have snow problems.moreover the previous mentioned resorts Hintertux is quite a choice for the views for the big part and across the region and on the glacier lots of freeride however no apres ski life.

I wouldn't go to Innsbruck no challenging stuff there.But the nearby resorts have a lot of potentials.

To sum up, Austria is a little country in terms of Km but with lots of resorts and joices.Arlberg is my favourite option,But Ζilertall (Hintertux , Mayrhofen etc,) is also good.

 
Cheers that helps me heaps with my decsion, i have heard that Warth and lech are connected now? do you know if this is true?
 
I live in Vienna, and I just checked for you about this. Newspaper article from April 2012, saying that the connection between Warth and Lech will not be finished for another year, so earliest 2013.
