This thread isnt supposed to copy thomaskepers thread but it was inspired by it. Thanks to him.

$5 is cool, but not for one meal when your a college kid with no job, so my question is whats the best meal for real cheap. My school charges some like $8.50 for a meal swipe so fuck that, Ill stick to my 5 meals a week, but I need to find a way to make up the other 20 some.. So far I have been just eating ramen and homemade sandwhiches with the occasional fast food. Im sure some of you are in college or out of college, what do you guys eat thats real cheap and at least edible..

thats exactly what I get when I go get fast food, 2 of em and maybe a plain double cheeseyburger. But the closest mcdonals isnt within walking distance so its rare..

Easy Mac in self contained bowls.  GENIUS!  No dishes, and as a college kid thats clutch, mix it micro it throw it away.  Nothing left over.

ramen is the way to go then buy a huge juge if iced t mix or lemonade mix and it will last for ever just mix with water or swanson makes those little precooked meals at the stop n shop near my school with a stop n shop card its 10 fro 10 dollars they arent that grose either

u guys are fuckin sick. get a huge bag of brown rice, buy some tortillas, some tomatoes and potatoes and some chiloula boom fatty burrito. probably would be less than 2 dollars per serving

or some whole wheat pasta and some ground beef thats on sale and some tomato sauce, not pasta sauce and thats about a 2 dollar meal too. douse it with some EVOO its its incredible and good for you.

you can alsso get canned tomatoes which are alot cheaper than fresh ones, and if you rinse them off for a while you usually cant even taste can.

there are lots of ingredients that if you buy you can use for lots of things, like potatoes, canned tomatoes, kidney beans, so then your food cost is down and so is your hungry meter.

always buy whole milk too unless you are a fat ass. whole milk is really good for you lots of protien and calories. what young skier doesnt need calories.

It's just a really, really small ice cream cone. They give them to you free anyway if somebody buys something that you're with. They do this where I'm at, I don't know about you though, but it's definitely worth a try.

Make friends with people that work at restaurants and get free food when they close, I worked at a restaurant for two years and if you were cool, you got all the free food you wanted. But if that doesnt work, ramen is always the college food, and Mcdonalds double burgers

buy a bag of rice and some beans(and cheese if youre feeling it) plus like a variety pack of spices so you can mix it up. plus ome tortillas and youre set.

word, that or get two items off the buck menu at mcdonalds with a free cup for water. itll come to 2.16, but thats a ton of food.

Fazolis on the value menu! you could get some pizza, spaghetti, water, and free breadsticks man. Thats what i eat alot. Its way worth it!

they have the best breadsticks but everything else there kinda sucks, the pasta isnt that good and neither is the pizza, but you dont care when your munchin on 6 breadsticks ha.. I had that last night

haha, finally, the first person who doesn't confuse real food for fast food.

Sounds like you're on a work out diet?

ok so go find yourself a friend that works at einstein bagels. at the end of every night the employees can take all the bagels home. so you just get a shit load of bagels and you can make tons of good stuff with them. use your imagination.

They have everything in Ikea. Ikeas food is always good, i just wish there was one near me so i could eat there more often. They should just lay off the furniture and just sell food

scrambled ramen!!!! so take a pakage of ramen boil the noodles with out flaver, when ready strain water, crack an egg in the pot over the noodles, add flaver adn if you have it a tablespoon of cream cheese. put back over heat and stir till egg is scrambled in with noodles.

im flattered by your thread jack,

and to participate,

either chicken wrap, or two cheesy double beefs from tbell and water

haha that shit isnt goina happen, the only person I know with over 5-7 is a guy with 14 and hes just stingy..

I just buy tons of raw ingredients and cook everything myself, which probably comes out to about $2-4 a meal, pasta is cheap, generally and if you buy store brand diced tomatos, tomato sauce and paste, which costs less than $1.00 a can each. and take a clove (segment) of garlic, some olive oil, basil, oregano and an onion, cook it in the oil then add all your can tomato products, you can make a sauce that will last for 2-3 meals.
for salad, a head of romaine lettuce costs about $3 where I am and you can make 3 salads with it, or put it on sandwiches, etc. you can make a nice salad dressing with olive oil, balsamic or rice vinegar, crushed garlic, basil and oregano.
If you can find a place that sells day-old bread, it usually is about $1 a loaf for the Dempsters grainhouse stuff in Canada. Bread is good pretty much anywhere, anytime for sandwiches or toast or anything. Day old bread tastes the same and has the same texture as new bread, unless you are extremely discerning. oatmeal makes a good, cheap breakfast, cause you can buy like a 2 Kg bag of oats for a very reasonable price and all you have to do is boil it in salted water and add sugar/nuts/raisins/cinnamon, etc.
theres many more things you can do, but that is just a few things I do regularly. Groceries cost me on average about $100-$150 a month, but at the beginning of the semester my mom left me with a ton of food, too.

yeah if you go grocery shopping you can do it cheap anough just remember spam and ramen noodles i got a million recipes for each

yeah man I get shit from my parents and friends because I buy high calorie food, but as a skinny, active guy with a fast metabolism it doesn't make a difference. I'm looking for the most calories per dollar I can get. for example I was arguing with a friend over which bread to buy. his bread costs a dollar less, but my bread has twice the calories, whole wheat calories which are good and last.

whole milk tastes better and can be used as cream for your coffee. what people don't realize is that fat has 4x the calories per gram as carbs, and if you're burning it all off anyways, it doesn't really matter. i don't have high cholesterol and my blood pressure is as low as it could be while still being healthy.

another good item to buy is non-light beer. its about 200 calories per beer, and it will fill you up. also, if you drink it on an empty stomach you get a nice buzz even after 1-2 beers, as well as some good calories to burn.

and as for cheap food, eggs and whole-wheat toast are the answer. theres so many possibilities like skillet steaks and eggs, burger with fried egg on top, an egg sandwich with hot sauce, and you can add bagels cheese bacon ham or anything.

a cheesy double beef burrito, big taste taco, and a "water" costs me $2 at taco bell. step that up to a cheesy double beef burrito, cheesy gordita crunch and a water and youve got yourself one delicious meal for like $2.75

Now is the perfect time to learn. Experiment, see what works for you and what doesn't. It's a good skill to have anyway.

The ideal meal is what others have already said. Buying some tortillas, cheese, rice, a little chicken etc. Make some tacos, burritos, tacitos, etc. Its all the same stuff. tortilla, meat, cheese.

people think that a cheap meal MUST mean fast food...

just go to a grocery store, pick out some pasta and a sauce. you are set. then, see if you can find a cheap bulk pack of chicken, and some frozen or canned veggies or whatever to top it with. daily price will be under 2 bucks
