Best Low Key Mountains to Live Near

I'm planning on getting the hell out of Breckenridge/Summit County and looking at moving to Montana, Idaho, Utah, Wyoming.. Really anywhere that there aren't ridiculous crowds and prices. Definitely looking for a mountain that has great blacks/double blacks, tree skiing, and bowl skiing, I don't really care about park skiing. Let me know what you guys think and where you would like to live or already do live. Thanks in advance.

North Idaho is the place to be. So many dope low key resorts and the lakes are really fun in the summer with some cool camping spots. Canada is close by too so its a few hours away from Panorama etc and Mt. Baker is just across the state. Just keep in mind that the bluebird days of CO will be over but the snowpack is much better.

Schweitzer- Best in the region IMO and where I grew up skiing. Some insanely steep Tree skiing and SnowGhost skiing and some really gnarly runs off Lakeside Chutes and South Bowl Chutes. If you can throw down in Pucci's Chute you will forever have my respect as a skier. if you get a cheap camper, they have good overnight parking that is basically ski in / ski out.

Silver- Not a good as Schweitzer but less crowds and some good tree skiing. Have not been there too many times. The gondola is cool though.

49deg. North: I have honestly never skied here but I have heard nothing but good things. They usually get dumped on and have really nice trees.

Thank you for the input! I worked for the USFS in Bonners Ferry, Idaho and hung out in Sandpoint a lot. Fucking love it there and it's what originally inspired me to get the fuck outta NJ and move West. I've heard that Schweitzer is dope from the few guys I worked with up there and their wives work there so potentially easy to find a job there to get a pass. Rent is also like half the price there compared to here.

golden BC. you got lake louise an hour east, kicking horse at your front door and revy 1.5 hours west plus all the touring in between.

I wish I could move to Canada, it's really not easy at all. I've applied for a visa several times.

I was always under the assumption that is quite easy provided you're not a bum.....

They have a fairly recent provincial reconstruction thingy majoogy for skilled workers

Maybe things have changed in the past few years, I haven't tried in a while. I could probably get a transfer from Breckenridge Snowmaking to Whistlers crew since they are Vail owned. But that would probably be one of my few options for getting into the country.

10000000% this. Kicking Horse is the most under appreciated mountain out there. It's the most demanding terrain out there! and like he said, if you're feeling a sunny park day hit up louis just down the road a couple hours!!

It's much easier to get a Canadian working visa if you're under 30 from NZ or anywhere else in the british commonwealth.

Bozeman, Montana. Bridger Bowl is sick, season passes are cheap, lift lines get long on really deep days but finding freshies is never a problem. Not a whole lot for tree skiing if you're talking pillow lines and what not, but there's enough chutes and DB's and very techy skiing to challenge just about anyone. The backcountry here is also very accessible, and it's easy to find just about anything that'll suit your wants and needs if you have a solid touring setup or a sled

I grew up near 49 and it sucks. I don't know who you've been talking to but they definitely do not get dumped on. 8" is about the biggest dump I've ever seen there. We would go there a few days every year but Red Mtn is were I got a pass to. The terrain at Red is 100 times better.

OP I would recommend Baker or Big Sky/Moonlight Basin.

Look into the SWAP working holiday program. I went through Frosch Student Travel (see the list of recognized organizations) and just submitted my paperwork to immigration canada. I will hopefully get approved in a couple of weeks.

Sorry guy. Good skiing = crowded resorts

You have to ski a smaller hill with less technical terrain if you want smaller crowds. Oregon isn't bad, but you would probably only look at living in Bend and skiing Batchelor. Hood is great, but you have you have to live in Portland and drive at least an hour. Idaho is probably what you are looking for. Decent terrain with decent crowds. Colorado/Utah is where the big crowds are.

Living in Teton Valley and skiing Targhee may be right up your alley OP.
