Best lens for follow filming with glidecam for filming freseskiing

Hi I am thinking of upgrading to a dslr to film with the panasonic GH4 and I am kind of lost in the lenses. With lens would be good for follow filming with a glide cam +

It all depends on the shot you want, long lens or wide. Most of the time, I will shoot with an 11-16 on my glidecam with my gh3, sometimes ill put my 7.5mm fisheye on it for super close up rail shots or ill put my 17-50mm on there to get some long lens glide cams.

Example: fs100 with 11-16

fs100 with 17-50

Hope that helps man!

I usually use a Rokinon 14mm and between f/8 and f/16 on my Canon 60D. A gh4 has a 2x crop factor so instead of a 14mm it would become a 28mm. I have no experience with the GH4 but from looking at their website I would recommend the Panasonic 7-14mm so that way you could get really wide and then also slightly tighter.

also how in the world do you control that I have been think about doing this but can't seem to control the glide cam at all and my footage is all shaky

Let me rephrase this. My footage is wobbly not shaky

Honestly, the key is practice. For the long lens stuff, its also important for your glidecam to be very tuned, sometimes with a wide lens you can get away with your glidecam not being perfect, but its needed for long lens stuff.

When I do long lens stuff, I try to just keep my arms as quiet as possible and not ski over bumps and shit, small details.

I love my gh3, it works great for ski stuff. I use the 7.5mm rokinon fisheye with my gh3, those videos I posted were from like 4 years ago when I first got my fs100, which I sold awhile ago and got a gh3.

Seconded. I think the GH3 is the best deal out there right now for ski filming, battery lasts forever and they go for like 3-400 now which is insane. Not super sure why people still pick up t3i's over gh3's when the primary use is to film

Thank you and one more question what brand was the 11-16 lens ?

If they already have canon lenses and don't want to invest in an adapter or new lenses if their only getting it for a second camera for more angles. Thats what I am doing

Silly excuse IMO, canon dslrs are by far the lowest quality camera in the < $2000 range. A gh3 and an metabones is like $800 total...

Incase you're considering the Tokina 11-16, I have one for sale. And I also have the red rock canon to mft adapter I could include in as well. Let me know if there's any interest.

And actually, to go off of this, I have a gh3 I could get rid of as well. I know you said gh4 but the gh3 is really solid as well. Just an idea for you to think about!

Assuming you have a crop sensor canon, and you got a gh3 for filming, The gh3 would probably turn into your A cam. Also an adapter costs like 50 bucks on amazon, 100 if you get the metabones. the only thing the canon has in favor is magic lantern, and frankly if thats what youre worried about, a gh2 hacked puts out a more pleasing image imo and those things are dirt cheap.

Yes Ik that that is true but I am also saving up for quality lenses, lights, and other equipment and a basic B camera that has some form of slow-motion, produces a flat image, is cinematic and can work with canon lenses is all I need at the moment. Also I graduate high school in a couple years and I want to get a real cinema camera that shoots 4k/60p (Ursa Mini if there isn't something cheaper and better at that time) as a graduation 'present' to myself and I need money for that.

You're a troll, GTFO out of M&A

No I'm a photographer who owns a 7d and I disagree with your statement saying Canons are the lowest quality cameras in the sub 2k range.

He isn't saying as a camera that they are the lowest quality. He is suggesting that for video they are of low value.

And I disagree from personal experience. Mine works great for video

Sounds pretty good! could I get your email so we could talk about it over there ?

...but in reality I like the 12-24 f4 more. More zoom range > moar speed.

I have shot only Canon for all of my videos and can assure you that the Canon DSLRs are sub-par compared to the video you can get out of Sony and Panasonic/Lumix cameras for similar/cheaper prices.

As for the debate above. I'm on team "Canon is Meh". I even ditched Canon for stills a few years back (didn't hurt that I had a bunch of gear stolen and had to start back up fresh, I suppose)

The only reason I'm even shooting video on a DSLR is because I do both stills and video, and as of the last year or 2 have really only done stills. If I was going to buy a setup for video today, AND would be using it primarily for shooting skiing, it would almost definitely be a GH3, along with a Canon 35-105 f3.5, a 14 f2.5, and a m4/3 native fisheye, and from there just use the plethora of vintage primes I've had stocked up for my film cameras.. I'd spend the rest of my money building an editing suite, batteries/cards/that shit, and getting a decent stabilizer setup.

The 11-16 is great, for sure, but I'm a thrifty bastard, and would probably end up shooting at 14mm-ish anyway, so I'll save money and buy the cheaper, even faster, lighter, sharper, and tinyer 14mm f2.5.

...all hypothetical of course, if i'm going to gear-fap about it.

ohhh you're talking about the tokina version not the canon which is $3k. My bad

yeah not the 11-24 fuck that shit.

...I think the best lens for filming though is probably the Oakley Pink Iridium. Allows you to see way better.

sorry to jack this thread, but I have a question for you all.

I have a Canon 5D Mark III (don't hate, use it for stills for my job)

but I want to film some this winter. I would be filming mostly just follow cams. What do you suggest lens wise to get? Something under 500 would be sweet.

I filmed all of last year with a 35mm, if you want under 500 then you could grab a 35mm rokinon?

if you want wider then you should grab a 24, or even wider a 14mm

Possibly a tamron 17-50? Pretty versatile under 500
