Best knives for self defense

Now before reading this, I'm not a gungho douchebag who goes flipping out his pocketknife at any distant threat, and I don't instigate fights, etc., etc. Short story time: family when to Atlanta when I was 10, almost got mugged in metro station. Family is going to chicago next summer and I don't want to be caught with my hands in my pants, because for those who don't know chicago is one violent-ass city.

I was thinking of a balisong (butterfly) or automatic (switchblade) knife, because getting through airport security won't be a problem because we'd be driving (D.C. -> Chi).

Which do you guys recommend? +k

As someone who has lived in Chicago for the past 18 years (the city itself not the suburbs): excuse me? I have lived in this city my entire life and never had a single violent interaction. There are an unfortunately high number of tragic deaths however these center on gang related shootings and by standers on the city's far south and west sides. To claim that Chicago is a violent and dangerous is a naive statement grounded in despairing news reports and dramatized stories. Your family will suffer no harm when coming to Chicago, so please, don't give my city a bad name and don't promote tensions by buying a self-defense knife.

Get the stick out of your ass. I'll carry whatever I please. It's already happened once and I'm not willing to let it happen again. Either way, are there any hills around Chicago?

As for them not being legal, I am well aware.

This...my cousins and aunts all live there and I go there quite a bit. If you have a single brain cell and you stay out of the bad parts of town where the gangs are, you will not have a violent situation. And there is no need for a knife.

are you pushing 6 foot 200 pounds? No? you're not gonna intimidate shit. Don't have a weapon you are not prepared and trained to use.

while i would have to agree with everyone who has stated that Chicago is not even remotely dangerous, i also agree that you should carry whatever you please to defend yourself if necessary. even if you aren't worried about legality, I wouldn't get a butterfly or switchblade. 99% of them are fucking junk...like they just feel cheaply made. i've broken several of them. i'd stick with a decent sized pocket knife like this as it's something you can actually use without it falling apart on you:

you clearly are not from a city. pull enough on a mugger and he'll stab you with it. just keep your head up, you don't need a weapon to stay safe... really for your sake please do not pull out a knife like a tough guy, chances are if your pulling a knife on someone he is a hell of a lot tougher than you, end of story, you have to be fucking retarded to think a knife will save you.

holy dude man, you ALMOST got mugged????

wowzers what a harrowing experience. thats some young bruce wayne shit right there.

Lets just say that someone does try to mug you and your family, and you whip out the knife and the guy goes running- oops, it looks like you ALMOST go mugged yet again!

stop thinking youre tough, little man.

I live in Chicago... Don't go insulting gangbangers on the South side and you'll be fine... You don't need to bring a fucking knife in self defense. I can guarantee that your knife isn't gonna stop shit if they feel like raping and murdering your family.

First off, how old are you?

Now, just as everyone else is saying, don't buy a knife, Chicago is safe. Let's look some situations if you pull a knife...

The mugger has a gun-you get shot.

The mugger has a knife-he will try to stab you (do you really want to be in a knife fight)

The mugger has no weapon, but is still most likely tougher than you-are you actually prepared to stab someone? Once again, knife fight...

Now if you don't have a knife then...

The mugger has a gun-you get robbed, that sucks. Life goes on, unlike if you pulled a knife.

The mugger has a knife-you get robbed, but, you can call the cops while discretely following him. They pull up and you get your stuff back.

The mugger has no weapon-well chances are you will still get robbed, but if it is you and your family and one guy tries to rob you I would think you could hold your ground if you wanted to.

Don't buy a knife, you won't need it, and if you do it won't help.

for those saying that chicago is safe, and i know this doesn't apply to the entire town, but it has one of the highest murder rates in the country.

Cut a granola bar clean in half, wrapper included, in mid-flight.

Bought it for military use, real solid, trustworthy piece.

Lol. What is "almost" mugged? And for your own good, please never pull a knife on anyone, even if they are trying to rob you. The situation will get infinitly worse if you pull a weapon on someone. Stay out of sketchy areas if you are afraid of being mugged.

Are you fucking kidding me? This is the worst idea. If you're getting mugged and you pull a knife, you're going to get yourself shot or stabbed by whoever is mugging you. Your wallet is not worth the excitement and possibility of death. Besides, Chicago isn't as dangerous as you make it out to be.

Sorry, left to watch tv for 15 minutes expecting some actual answers, instead I found a continuing shit storm vs. the whole fucking city of chicago.

And for all the cockmunches, I live in a city of 200,000. Nice assumptions you got there.

I mean, it sounds like a good idea when you think about it.. "get a knife, self protection, just in case".

What it comes down too is you are getting mugged. Maybe at gun or knife point at that. What are you going to do? Pull your knife and risk dying over a few bucks and your wallet and watch? Not worth it.

But this is coming from someone who carries a gun in their truck. If I got robbed at gun or knife point, I would give it up no big deal, that is why you have insurance. If I got robbed with no weapon or was in a possible bad situation, I have a mag light in reach that is what gets used before that gun...wayyy before the gun.

Stay out of the shitholes and you will be fine. Don't go pulling knifes on people, and you will be fine.....to op seriously do you think that losing 100 dollars max is worth your life?( if you carry around more than $100 with you then you are very stupid.) if you pull a knife on somebody who is risking many years in prison, they aren't even going to flinch. I agree with the right that you are allowed to carry a knife if you want to, but use some logic, it's not going to make it any better.

I've got a switchblade. I use it a lot more fixing fencing in the park and opening packages than I do shanking people though

But he was a pretty threatening homeless guy to be fair, I mean asking for change is pretty much asking him to hand over his wallet.

Using a knife correctly is difficult. What are the chances you think of making the situation worse? I would say pretty high.

How much time do you spend in Southeast, or in Trinidad? If you don't need a knife in DC you're probably good.
