Best HD camera for Park Filiming....

hey guys, im in the market for a new camera and im wondering what the best HD options would be. i will be using it while skiing and pipe and jumps so it should durable. i have around 2400 to spend on it...if anyone has any idea or anything that would be helpful...also if anyone has anything used or cheaper i would be up to hear it

i would say panasonic HVX but it is a little out of your price range. Myabe try and find a sony FX-1. It is a super legit camera and im sure you could get one on ebay for about what you have

or if u wanna spend around a grand on ebay and u have a nice computer, and dont care that it doesnt have a handle or anything, get the HV20
 
go with the HV20 if you want a small easy camera to use. Use the extra cash to get a good small tripod, a good camera backpack, and anything else you may need.
 
i would say go with the fx1 its right there in your price range, easy to hold and good for follow cams.

the hv20 is a great camera for its price and size. the reason i dont reccomend it is cuz its only a 1 chip camera, so moving it around a lot your going to get a drop in quality and a lot more blur, and with that money i would get the fx1 also cuz it is simply a better camera.
 
in many ways i agree with horner that ithe hv20 is only single chip which will affect the lighting and AF sensitivity...but im considering it for its great price and the fact that it is small.. i would get the FX1 but im not sure if it is durable. i will need to be able to hold it and ski and then skii with with it in my pocket oor  such..im lening towards the hv20..thanks for the help guys....any other suggestions would be appreciated
 
the HV20 is a great little camera, you wont regret buying it. I'm even thinking of getting one to go along with my fx1 just because they're so damn cool.
 
oh horner you do have an fx1...i did not realize you owned one.. how do you like it
does it work well on the mountain... is it hardy enough for the hill and does it work
well in the white balance. and is it to bulky to use while skiing..how is the picture
quality compared to price...
 
for 2400 you could mabye get an fx1. that or just go sd cause thats how you and everyone else is most likely gonna be watching it. and get a vx2100 or dvx100, and spend the extra money on a nice tripod and other stuff.
 
hv20's are nice but if he has more than 2000 to spend, there are many better cameras he could get, some higher end 3ccd camera is a much better choice.
 
see what u guys dont understand is that your fancy budget HD cam isnt really High-definition!!

well it could be but chanes are you dont have an HD tv, HD player, HD monitor, enough power to render HD

until everyone has HD tv's and dvd players and every computer is set for that , id choose a dvx over most hd cams any day

the colors you can achieve with the 100b/100a are incredible

 
well i hate to answer for him but....

i think his website is located in his profile, check it out...he makes some of the best edits on this site...and his filming is amazing...i mean that camera is amazing on the snow and he is amazing with it...ha...

I really don't like the look and feel of fx1 footage. Go with the DVX instead. then save up untill you can buy a HVX or whatever is the hot shit then and the necessary equipment to record to a hard state media.
 
i agree with you guys on the rendering and HD editing but i do have a pc powerfull enough to handle the media....HD may not be as compatible right now but if im going to drop 2000 on a camera i want it to last..the panasonic is really nice but it is not nativly 16:9 aspect ratio...as some of the other guys have metioned the FX1's color and quality is awesome.. and i think it is worth it....but the Hv20 s nice but i dont think that it is powerfulll enough...only one chip..just to point out theat the fx1 does have three chips like the DVX
 
anyone who says that the fx1 can't produce a good looking image obviously doesn't know what they're talking about...

If you don't mind a bigger camera, then go with the fx1 or a dvx (fx1 in my opinion) and get a good backpack (I use petrol's gear) . If you want a smaller camera you can throw in your pocket, go with the HV20.

If you can afford getting an hd camera, then go for it
 
The fx1's color and motion tracking is no better then the dvx, It only has a slightly sharper image. (very slightly.

The DVX gives you muh more control over how the image looks, and is designed for armature filmmakers who are dedicated to getting a product that has the look and feel that they were aiming for.

The FX1 is marketed towards the soccer mom and dad with a lot of spare change that wants some 'HD' shots of their family that they can then take home and plug into imovie or whatever they have.

Basicaly if you just want to turn the camera on and point it, get the fx1. But if you want to learn about filming and have a little more creativity and control on how the picture looks get the DVX

And finally just remember that

HDV IS NOT THE SAME AS HD.
 
yes, it's not HD when you play it back, but it IS a better image. Everywhere in the various worlds of graphics, people know that if you use a 1 to 1 ratio for pixels in your files versus what it's playing on, you don't get the same clarity as using a higher ratio.

Industry standard for Graphic Design is 150 percent of the print resolution, so if shit's printing at 300 dpi, you work at 450 dpi.

Why do you think berman's timelapses look soo good in realtime? because he uses a still cam, which is higher quality yet than HD
 
The New Sony PMW EX1 It's pricey but it records to a solid state which means your not going to be bothered with moving parts. If you decide to jump with the camera. It's off the chain and if you have a power book or macbook pro your set from the start of production all the way through editing into post. It's ill but the color it produces and also the FPS offered are off the chain.

first off, you have obviously never shot with an Fx1. I have used a DVX many times, and yes it is a great camera, and so is the Fx1.

To say that it is for soccer moms is the most ridiculous statement that I have ever seen anyone write about the Fx1. I could show you LOADS of stuff shot on the Fx1, skiing and non skiing that looks amazing. I admit, the DVX offers way more image control than the Fx1. But I don't see how that makes the Fx1 a "soccer moms" camera or the dvx100 superior.

HDV is HD. HD is defined by anything that has a higher resolution than 720x480 which is 480p. So to say that HDV is not HD is probably the most uneducated thing you can say about HD. I don't think people understand that.

I know that the next thing you're going to say is that the Fx1 can't shoot uncompressed 8 bit footage and understand that. But that doesn't make HDV a worthless shitty format, IT IS STILL HD. I have shot with both cameras and I chose to get the Fx1 over the DVX100. I'm not saying the DVX100 isn't a great camera, it is, it revolutionized the indie film making scene and set a new industry standard for SD cams.

What it comes down to is this. I have seen movies shot on the Fx1 that kills stuff shot on the DVX, and vice versa. Both cameras are great, they are the 2 most popular prosumer cameras used in the last few years, and there is a reason for that.

It all comes down to the videographer and how they use the camera. The camera is just the tool, the videographer makes it happen. Give a cheap Hi8 cam to Stephen Spielberg and I bet he could make a better movie than some kid with a R.E.D, a viper, or an F23.

You just end up sounding stupid when you say things like...

you cant connect the FX1 by HDMI to a computer for live recording, with a Black Intesity card and get uncrompressed HD??? you can do it with the hv20
 
It truly is all personal preference. I honestly would not want to deal with the size of HDV files. I have a Canon GL-2 (decent camera) and I have found that there is so much that you can do with it. Honestly if you don't want to learn all the functions of a camera, and you just want to point and shoot, any one chip camera will be fine (hv-20)...where as with a fx-1 you have to learn the camera to make the picture the best (dont take my word for that). I, personally, would much rather have a camera that is somewhat easy to use and can be set up easily, than a camera that has to be set up perfectly for every shot.

Yes Adrian, people just think HD is going to make there footage look sick. Thats only if you have the compatible playback and editing equipment. like you said.

You can achieve great picture with almost any camera, of course some better than others, if i were you id look for something with great image stabilization and a color gain that will give the footage a warm feel. 

Most of all, lighting makes for more of a difference if your quality. But i bet you know that already. Just watch out for that flat light.
