STEVIE RAY VAUGHN. no doubt he is the best. he blew away everyone ever. hendrix is a close second though.

i just read a lot of hendrix's. People are confusing cool with good. Hendrix was the coolest, but he was not the best. Stevie Ray Vaughn is definatly the best. I bet half the people here havne't even heard of him and are just saying Hendrix is the best because thats the only person they can think of.

i think jimmy page, he is the platform for most of what you hear in music today. Stevie ray vaughn is second.

Oh my dear lord, a best guitarist thread with no mention whatsoever of DJANGO REINDHART!?!?!?! He's German and he's amazing, like him! Joe Satriani is also really high on my list. And finally, John Pizzorelli, my favorite jazz guitarist. My guess being my favorite doesn't make him the best, but he's still really freakin' good.

FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO SKANK!

Emo kids don't cry because they're sad all the time, they cry because they have to listen to that horrible music all the time. I'd cry if i had to listen to that whiny music over and over and over....wouldn't you?

(I'm in a band, go to purevolume.com and check out East Coast Skank. Our recording sucks, but bear with it...)

asac's right stevie ray is kcik ass. but being a girl i must go with my ultimate opinion. since you did not define exactly what kind of guitarist(rock, jazz) my favorite guitarist is...John Mayer. most people only know your body is a wonderland which is a mediocre song. but his albums are filled with catchy chords and he is also very good at jazz guitar. i guess i just really like his style. most guys don't really like john so my opinion probably doesn't matter too much here

Fookadoomee

that john mahre dude is actually really good, im not a fan of his music in general but i heard a cove he did of radiohead's kid a and it was all done in guitar it was fucking sweet

robert johnson? ry cooder? duane allman? buddy guy?

Some folks look for answers, others look for fights

Some folks up in tree tops, just looking for their kites

Goes to show, you don't ever know

Watch each card you play and play it slow

yea but most quit before they get good, Guitar is pimp. I think robert randolph is amazing.

I say page, he may not play the most TECHNICAL stuff, but i think the best guitar player who can just make the best sound, page has got music inside of him.

SRV gets a mention. and clapton gets out there for me because he only downpicks... think about how fast he really plays knowing that.

depends what you mean by 'best'. there are the techinal masters like joe satriani and steve vai that can play lighting-fast scales, but they are boring to listen to. what's harder is being creative enough to write great riffs and expand your horizons. this is why jerry garcia and try trey anastacio are the best. Jerry played his whole life without his half of his middle finger, and trey's work with phish has covered everything from easy listening (think 'junta' era) to rock ('farmhouse' album) to long jams (Live Phish). Plus, Trey's picking is the craziest. download 'marijuana' of Lime Wire and you'll see what im talking about.

what about tom morello....he ain't page, clapton or knopfler but he's damn good...anyone hear or Roy Gallagher? check him out...he's sick...his band was called 'taste' (or taist, not sure how it's spelt) out of N Ireland.

randi rhoads, steve vai, stevie ray vaughan, eddie van halen, eric clapton, george harrison. tooooo many classics. and how about those guys from dragonforce. sheeeeeeit. michael angelo batio is another gnarchild when it comes to shredding. check out some of his vids on youtube. too crazy.

lol to say someone is the best isnt possible steve vai maybe? but don ross or andy mckee could mash acoustic fingerpicking so much harder than vai so are they better? what about mohammed suicmez from necrophagist? he is easily way more tech then either 3 of them when playing metal shit..i dunno seems impossible to say one is the best..what about that michael angelo guy that that plays the 2 guitars at once?

johnny greenwood, of radiohead, does some pretty crazy stuff with a guitar.

jerry garcia was just such a natural, and played such sweet perfect licks

trey anastasio is just a madman on the guitar- from super technical compositions to deep space funk

doc watson had great crisp picking style

personally best: page, satriani, tom morello

favorites: the guitarist to animal collective and doug martsch from built to spill (if you ever heard any of his solo stuff its so melodic)

omar rodriguez lopez : most original and inventive guitarist of our time, definitly a modern legend

is playing guitar considered a sport? no. so why are you comparing peoples skills and style? playing guitar is music, music is art, art isnt about competition. its not like people are comparing vincent van gough and leonardo di vinci, they are both good artists and make masterpieces, but you cant say one is better than the other. same goes with guitarists

Your cries are falling on deaf ears. I've been avoiding posting in this thread, because all of the poor taste in guitarists. I agree, comparing guitarists is pointless, everyone has a different taste in music, therefore a different opinion when it comes to the "best guitarist." I will just say that Jimmy Page is a sloppy guitar player in an extremely over-rated band. There are so many other guitarists out there that can put more emotion and soul into a few notes than Jimmy Page could in a whole cd.

fuck clapton.....sorry had to get that off my chest. but best is robert fripp from king crimson, jeff beck, jimmi hendrix, zak wylde, santana, joe satirani, angus young, and the guitarist from dragon force hands down.
