here is my question....why is jimmy so damn good? What makes him any better than clapton? Also what makes the best guitar player. I don't think any one has said anything about who has changed music or guitar playing as a whole. What about all the guitar players like B.B. King and all the blues guitar players who made clapton who he is. I think those names should be raised into the topic. Anyone who ever says kurt cobain again should be hit with a stick really really hard, he's terrible, however he changed the way music was going. Just a thought or too.

can't remember his name, but the guy from rage against the machine

i don't want this to get out too far but i heard ninthward has sex with armada-Twix_182

jimi was the best because of his dynamics for one thing, the rise and fall of intensity in his playing is fucking insane and also the main reason why you can play the same fingers as hendrix but never sound the same, it was said in a rolling stone interview that jimi played his amps at full volume and used his guitar to control the level, and that made his live shit unreal, made his playing have multiple voices and shit, you listen to him live, at least from a guitarists standpoint, between the way his fret hand manipulates teh sound and the way hes stroke the shit, its fuckin scary, hes so damn powerful, and the feedback man, other people had to literally strangle and fuck their guitars to get even the same sounds as hendrix, but hendrix did it with ease and steeze, look when people say hendrix is god, its not cause what he played was so good, well it is, but for those who know, its because what he was capable of was divine, an example of what i mean, look at the band of gypsies concert, the first show when they recorded the gnarly version of machine gun, that was fuckin epic, the next three shows were nowhere near, but still hendrixes bad sessions were still some crazy fuckin guitar

Fuck You

^thats pretty damn interesting.

VERY well put man, when you really take a good BIG look at things, you see that that ACDC, Slash and all the others that are "hard" lala, they dont have ANYTHING on Jimi. Jimi was aware of the divine, and used it in his music. If you honestly think he just played random shit, you need to take a MUCH needer deeper look into his music, cuz when you understand it, you will see a much deeper thing happening. Band of Gypsys, yesssss

while some of you have posted some of my favorite artists, i still have not seen any of the "best guitarists"......

to name a few:

leo kottke

van halen (his taps are orgasmic)

jimmy page

slash

dimebag darrel

haha that was the one guy i had no idea who the fuck he was. but like dimebag... yeah he was pretty sick... but nowhere near the sickest of the sick. page and van halen are amazing. you were right about them. but what about krik hammet? what about david mustaine? comon man.

Coke fucked it up, along with axl's super addictive personality as apposed to the rest of the bands highly addictive personalities. fuck 80's music, its all coked the fuck out, i hate it, no soul at all. I rock the Band of Gypsys Live at the Fillmore East 2 Disc Set daily, there's some true funky soul music that reaches deeper than just the notes everyone else hits instead of playing from the soul spirit of the artist, as they did. Hendrix is so far past all of them, in fact, I don't see how you could say any of them are better because hendrix invented about 100 techniques that they try to base their shit off of, but do it in a logical way, which is not the best when it comes to music. Thanks goes out to Colombia's Finest for 80s "rock."

coke didn't ruin 80's metal, heroin did. And the drugs still didn't mess it up the stupid people that took them ruined the time. Then Nirvana came and destroyed everything they new. So yeah about jimmy hendrix, he was amazing, i truely think that he is one of the best ever, but i don't think he was the best of all time. I don't think Kirt Hammett should ever be raised in a topic like this because if you now your penatonics well enough you can play anything that he's ever done, however he is still really good. Dimebag is someone to be raised because of the mark he left on music. The fact that he had that much power for being the only guitar player in the band is amazing. Some of the stuff that he did is amazing and he could be the best metal guitar player. I was caught watching a concert on pbs not too long ago because it was amazing, it was the Crossroads festival and there was some of the best guitar work i've heard in a very long time being played by the people who influenced Eric Clapton and all of the greats we know today. Everyone should at least try and watch so of the jams that went on that night.

ugh, TRUST ME, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! I've done sooo much work on the topic of drugs and the styles of music they influence. Heroin was dead as fuck in the US in the 80s, Coke was it. Why do you think they play so fast and "confident"? Or why is Eddie Van Halen always smiling? Trust me, if they were on heroin, they wouldn't be ABLE to play like that, they would be so drained and mellowed out. I'm not talkin out my ass, just believe me, is it that hard? I'm not trying to argue, im just sharing some knowledge.

are you fucking kidding me? hmm... since you were talking about axl and guns n' roses... ADLER GOT KCIKED OUT OF THE BAND BECAUSE HE USED WHAT IN THE 1980's? HERION BITCH.

how about nikki sixx? I'm pretty sure he died at least once doing heroin and was brought back. thats just motley crue.

i think it's an act

stick that in your pipe and smoke it!

im going to go with Warren Haynes. Hendrix is overrated, and people who don't know shit about music just throw his name out there.

-Tom

Mass Fuggas fo' life.

^ i think you are mistaken about Hendrix. He had his own FORM of music, no one can touch it, but it was amazing. People that don't know anything about music, sure they'll throw Hendrix out there, while the people that know a little about music will bash him, but the people that understand music, not just know what books and articles say, will always love him.

"clapton hands down, hendrix just fucked around and to a group of acid lovin ..."

"SHUT THE FUCK UP MAN, one, hendrix was renowned for his singing in the beggining of his days, and if youve ever seen any jimi hendrix video you know why clapton cried so much while he was around, doesnt matter who you are, and i can testify to this, you see hendrix perform live, you stop and say DAMN! like token black guy damn, i was playing live at berkley once at a party, people were occupied with other shit, but fuck me if everyone in that party didnt at least stop and watch that shit for a minute or ten if not stop and ask me a thousand questions about the shit, and second bitch, quoting pete townshend (the who, for the bunch of kids im sure havent heard of his name) 'hendrix was bigger than acid, hed make you come out of the trip' and it wasnt just the crazy antics, it was the way the guitar howled, hollared, moaned, screamed, and wailed

Fuck You"

Well said man

....

why ahs no one mentioned eddie van halen or joe walsh? both are sick guitarists...joe walsh has soooo many amazing solo's and Hnedrix isn't overrated he is so untouchable with his style of music that it's unarguable but clapton and jimmy paige were def up there and i think jerry garcia was a much better songwriter then guitarist but he was good at both

Actually... I just remembered it was Page that really invented finger tapping as well.

Listen to the mind-bending solo on Heartbreaker. After the first loop of hammer pull-offs, he does pretty much the same thing except he is actually using his right hand, tapping the fret and pulling at the same time. Although he never used that technique again on any other song, Van Halen admitted that he got the idea after hearing that solo. Ha! Page rules all.

Oh yeah and sorry, my guitar terminology sucks in english. I know loop isn't a word used, but I'm damned if I know the word you anglos do use.

~~Phunkin Phatt Phreerider~~

Erm... yeah.

Malmsteen and Satriani have amazings hands for sure, but there music has no soul, and its boring. Some of Malmsteen's classical adaptions are pretty cool I have to admit, but if you were to combine the technicall proficincy of Satriani or Malmsteen with the sould of Clapton or King, you would have a damn good guitarist.

if your talking about best guitarists then you need to get away from artists whom only use the electric guitar. it takes much more skill to make a 12 string acoustic guitar your bitch (no offense to the females).

hence, leo kottke
