im writing an english paper about the best freestyle skier of all time, and i want to here your guys' opinions.

Thats inherently subjective. It's like asking what flavor of ice cream is the best. You could do a poll but the answer will be wildly different for everyone.

its candide, tanner hall, or shane mcconkey unless your just talking park in which case it could be wallisch or dollo.

Realistically just watch "Like a Lion", look up tanners wiki page and write off that

Depends how you look at it but it's either candide or ahall in the general sense probably

Most well rounded of all time is Hunter Hess or Tanner Hall, maybe even Leigh Powis, idk that's a tough category, Colby Stevenson making his way into those convos as well

I think Sammy C is the greatest big mountain / backcountry rider ever by a country mile.

one will always come on top, for skiing it would probably be a popular opinion war between harlaut, hall, and wallisch if we’re being real.

forgot candide, there’s gotta be a few more.

Not necessarily. If we’re assuming freestyle skiing is a creative enterprise, it’s sort of against the ethos of the sport to say there’s a possibility of an absolute best. It would be like saying Michael Angelo was the best artist of all time. Super broad claim.

Sammy is one of my favorite riders to watch. Just mindblowing.

well skiing isn’t necessarily an art form, it’s a sport. if you throw style, creativity, and the time period out the window you can kind of measure who’s “the best” through objective analysis of the difficulty of their tricks. so relative to overall versatility and talent, i’d say alex hall is probably the greatest of all time at the moment. you could even say andri ragettli (yeah he’s lame af, but he did the first real quad and is always competitive). but again alex hall isn’t that influential and doesn’t have a style that will likely never fall out of popularity such as harlaut’s or even wallisch. if we’re gonna pick the theoretical goat it’s probably harlaut, but he’s getting old and there’s many skiers objectively better than him at this point.

How is Hunter more rounded than AHall? Alex has 4 XGames gold metals, and an olympic gold, multiple legitimately awesome street AND powder parts.

Candide or AHall.

Candide was at the top of both freeride and park comps

AHall is still at the top of park comps and street skiing

I think it's wayyy harder to be good at pipe and rails than it is to be good at park and powder. People forget hunter is still the only skier in history to land a triple in the pipe, he also is crazy good at rails. Also Ahall himself has been in these forums recently saying that he can't believe how insanely well rounded hunt is.

You aren't wrong tho, Alex also murders every discipline, he's probably the objective goat. I used to hate the idea of candide or dollo not being known as the best but ive come around to just accepting that we probably won't see another skier as dominant in comps, innovative, and stylish as ahall.

If it's for an English paper, I would pivot and write why it's impossible to identify who is the best freestyle skier of all time. You'll be able to explain why it's all subjective, drawing comparisons and contrasts between eras, skiers, and disciplines. Shit, I'd open it up to ALL skiing, recognizing Ingmar, Mikaela, Moseley, etc... You'll be able to milk way more paragraphs this way.

I think Hatveit is the greatest park skier of all time. He's not an overall GOAT like Tanner or Candide but in terms of pure bag of tricks and difficulty in the park idk if anyone can compare to him, even Wallisch. Watch the SLVSH game where he wins against 3 other phenomenal skiers and his TGP edits for reference.

The common answer i feel the average park skier would say is harlaut, but you could go even more recent than that or even older than that easily. I bet theres 12 year olds now saying andri ragettli is the goat cause he can spin faster than anyone else but obviously to the average ns user spin to win is lame and the money is in style

Its between AHall and Henrik.

THall is a legend but he won x games with a sw 7 lol. He has the accolades but not the skill to keep up with the new gen skillwise.

Candide is the best in the BC but doesnt have park game like AHall or Henrik.

Henrik is better in the BC than AHall but AHall is better in the park.

In like 5 years this convo is gonna be irrelevant because Matej is gonna dominate every category of skiing ?

Since AHall vs Henrik is such a toss up I gotta go with Henrik just based on the impact that he has had on skiing.

Colby is in the convo too but ya henrik the goat

This ^ is actually the most based opinion in this entire thread.

In my personal opinion since the level of skill increases through the years, objectively speaking, the more modern skiers of the day (AHall for example), present a level of skiing which is at the highest skill level we have ever seen. I think if you're looking at who was the most influential to the sport during the peak of that skier's career I think that as of right now Candide, Tanner, Tom or Henrik would take that spot, but I think AHall has an extremely high potential to be mixed in with that conversation (maybe in a few years). As for the most well-rounded skier, I think Colby, AHall, or Candide are the big options. For greatest ability wise in park I believe that at the moment it's highly contestable, but that inevitably Matej will be undisputedly the greatest by far.

Bottom line, there's a lot of different angles to take when considering who could be the greatest. I might be a bit biased because I'm kind of an Alex Hall glazer, but I feel like there's at least an argument for him in almost every way you can go about looking at it.

based choice honestly, one of the objectively highest skilled rail skiers out there even at his older age.

He also has 5 x games medals including a slopestyle gold. Probably my favorite skier to watch shred in general.

Yeah he hasn’t slowed down at all. His footage in the Norway LTC episode and that rail jam last year were insane.

Theres more to skiing than just the freestyle aspect. For me it would have to be the pioneers of the sport over the years. In the 1960s, one could say it was Jim mcConkey who was Shane McConkey's father although he had no relevance to teaching Shane the sport. His claim to fame was pioneering heliskiing into what it is today. During the early 90s, one could assume that the title had then shifted to Glen Plake as he jumpstarted the freeriding/extreme side of the sport. Then during the New Canadian Air Force, Mike Douglas comes to mind as he would later be a part of the group that created the first twin tipped ski. Another one would be Shane McConkey for not only his energy and enthusiasm in the sport, but raw talent, pioneering ski base jumping, and being partially a visionary for wider skis allowing for better float in powder. At the turn of the century, the sport seemed to enter its pandoras box phase as pioneers and pros were no longer just a select few but en mass from Candide, THall, JP Auclair, and many others. Then came around Henrik harlaut and Tom Wallisch who only contributed to the explosive growth in park skiing. Now it seems with the continued advent of social media and data sharing, it seems the sport is inundated with a new pro skier everyday whether it was AHall in the mid 2010s, Markus Eder over the last few years, and now young guns taking center stage such as Matej, Walker Woodring, Eileen Gu, Colby Stevenson, Cole Richardson, Max Palm, and hundreds of others. Its extremely subjective, but if I could name one or two from the entire list, it would be Glen Plake and Candide Thovex.

Now since the question was asking about the best freestyle skier of all time, that just like anything else is tricky to say. If anything, I think the biggest modern influence not only to the skillset but also the attire worn by so many skiers would have to be Henrik Harlaut. Candide was fundamental in moving snowboard tricks to skis, but Candide hasn't made waves in freestyle skiing in a long time. Henrik still competes and is most likely the oldest still doing so and winning medals in the process.

All you dummies with the “this skier did this””that skier does that” foh with all that soft shit. Dollo is the goat and has been for last 10+ years

No one has, and No one will ever match the freestyle of:

TRAVIS HEED.

its possible to jock that style, and blatantly steeze steal, but T-Heed is forever OAT.

dude puts the oat in goat.
