Best Free Anti-Virus Software?

Long story short, I recently had a hard drive failure and had Dell ship me a new one (for free). Having lost everything that was on my old one, this included McAfee. I cannot re-install McAfee because my laptop was school issued and I graduated last year rendering the school tech support services useless for my cause.

Now I downloaded Spybot because I have had success with that in the past. Are there other/better free programs out there? I realize that I may just have to sack up and buy something but I want to explore my options first.

I totally agree with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, this is a great program. But the Windows one I hear is very suspect. Bump for more suggestions.

Typical idiot 13 year old response.

Get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I had a virus on my old Dell a few years ago because I was a dumbass, and every time I tried to open Norton the virus would shut it down, and every time I tried to google "antivirus software" the virus would shut it down. I somehow ended up downloading Malwarebytes and that shit was gone within a few minutes.

malware bytes.

i use it allt he time. although it won't PREVENT viruses, it will remove just about anything.

also, the best virus protection is prevention. don't download sketchy shit (yes, you know what i'm talking about)

protip: don't download pr0n, stream it

I haven't gotten a virus yet on a computer I have had with Windows Defender on it. It works pretty well even though it is a program for windows. It gets the job done.

i personally use AVG, and had never had a problem. avast is basically the same thing, it's really up to you, both get updated daily

Thanks for the advice people. I ended up rolling with Malwarebyte's Anti-malware and AVG. Got the 30 day trials for both of their paid versions too :-)

When I had a PC I used AVG and it worked great for me. I never had any problems in the 6 years I had that computer.
