ok first off why is everyone saying stairway to heaven? anyone who accaully listens to led zepplin will know that song is way to over rated. Dont get me wrong i think its one of the greatest songs ever but jimmy page has played a lot more shit that is so much more complex. AND you must be on crack to even consider metalica.

Jimi hendrix is one of the greatest guitarist ever! Jerry Garcia is one of the greatest guitarist ever.

Anyways... the greatest improvisional gutarist is Trey anastasio. the fastest guitar player i have ever heard is Jake from umphreys mcgee. Jimmy page is one of the greatest. Frank Zappa is was truly amazing.

although if we are soley taking about solos then i will have to say Hendrix

 
yeah I was just listening to stairway the other day . . . great song no doubt, but all the guitar work in it is pretty straightforward and simple. maybe the live version is better, but it is by no means up there with some of the other stuff mentioned in this thread

I reckon they both kick anything Metallica has to offer as far as solos go (although their music is fucking awesome)

one by metallica has the best solos and the best guitar duet i have ever heard from a metal band. dimebag darrel from pantera can KILL anyone, he is nuts. anything from zepplin, tom morrello is a genius, cant forget les claypool and flea for bass stuff, john frusanti, EVH, slash, i could go on for hours. but my two favorites are one by metallica, and comfortably numb by pink floyd. david gilmore is the man

A bunch of very deserving votes but Dick Dale has so many QUALITY quitar solos I can't even pick one to post. All I can say is that DD was doing is way before any one else and is in my opinion the best ever.
