Holy shit, why did it take this long for this to be said? Best all around mountains: Sugarloaf and Sugarbush (Mt. Ellen if we're talking Sugarbush). You can't beat the variety, trees, and vibe.
nobody's rails can touch burke's as far as how well they're setup their jumps blow but the glades and OB stuff is very fun i'd say stowe or okemo have the best jumps and overall loon has the funnest park jay is definitely the best glade bc stuff
keep it down dude, we don't want everyone to know!
but really, sugarbush is the worst. terrible park, no snow, super easy, nothing fun to do. its true that its not crowded but only cause it sucks so much that no one wants to go. without a doubt the worst mountain in the east. whatever you do, don't go there.
there is back/sidecountry but you gotta know where to go to get it and its super hard to find without help.
I agree with Freeskiers #1 pick of Stowe, But Sugarbush/ Mad River is a great, much cheaper alternative. Between the three different mountains, there are awesome steep trees, banger moguls and a small, but progressive park. There is also a fare amount of side country as well as true (eastcoast) hike accessed terrain, which I am more than happy to share with all. I'm not going to put down any other resorts, I just want to let you know that the Mad River Valley is sick and affordable.
yup. but seriously go to stowe/killington/smuggs/jay/wherever else. i hear they're all way better than sugarbush anyways. or if you want to try a bunch of places you can tour the northern vt mountains for a week. specifically sugarbush/mad river/stowe/smuggs/jay. that would definitely give you a little bit of the best of everything from the east, terrain wise at least, there might be better parks out there though.
The answer to "Best eastern ski resort" has to be Stowe. You can argue all you want, but Stowe is a true resort with high end lodging and tons of things to do in town. You can argue that other mountains have better parks, and I would agree, but that is only a small percentage of everything a resort has to offer. Stowe easily has the best variety of terrain, the best lodging, and overall will probably provide you with the best experience on your trip.
That being said, it is by far the most expensive, but you get what you pay for.
I'm actually sorta stoked nobody said Magic for fresh pow and steep trees, the fact it gets overlooked keeps untouched lines for days. They don't have jack shit for a park and no village but holy flaming shitballs do they have awesome tree skiing. I love Stark, Manny and Jay but the powder wolves are always out and they're 3+ hours farther north so that's a tough call for me.
in case anyone is wondering, killington's pipe is only 22 feet at the beginning of the`year. after the first storm, the flat bottom rises about 2 feet.
good to know. i remember the first time i hit their superpipe and i was used to like the 10ft tall pipe at bristol and i was scared shitless haha but now i got used to it. i love dropping into it. u get so much speed
a few its right next to sugarbush so anything from there is the same. but its a lot more low key and as was said, you kinda need a local to ski here otherwise you will never find most of the good stuff
Best resort(s) For park: Mount Snow, Vt Loon, NH Stratton, VT Sugarbush, VT Stowe, Vt
Best Resort(S) for Backcountry: Jay Peak, VT Mad River Glen, VT Sugarbush, VT Stowe, VT
Jay and the Loaf are too fuckin far to day trip. Obviously they will show up in this list but if you are day tripping them from Boston/NY thats pretty fuckin insane. So they don't really count to me if you're going away for over 2 days you should really take the week and fly out west cause that shit aint gonna be cheap in new england so find some real skiing.
For somewhere that can be done in a day from Boston (or NYC) Sugarbush (long ride still) is probably best. Its worth the extra bit than Killington. Cannon is good for a shorter drive. Mount snow also acceptable for a shorter drive (but I'd avoid on weekends.)
