So, my sister and I have both had computers given to us as graduation presents from my uncle. I moved out about 5 years ago and my sister just moved out to school the beginning of this year. So now my dad and youngest sister, whos still in high school are left with our old family computer thats about 10 years old. that wont work out.

like a lot of people, my family is in some hard financial times, but ive got a job here and have some extra money so I want to buy my family a new computer. I know quite a bit about them, but I just wanted to come here for some extra advice in case theres any good deals im missing. I would not buy an emachines or compaq.

dell has always been good to me and HP looks pretty good too. Ive been looking at this one here

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9487156&type=product&id=1218112663257

thats about the price range id like to stay in(around $500) they will be using it mostly just for typing papers, browsing the internet, just normal stuff.

any tips would be greatly appreciated. thanks

sorry for double post but you can get something cheaper then what you posted. Buying directly from the site is often a better deal because you can customize the machine a lot more then from best buy I would recommend just going to Dell or HPs website and start with the cheapest computer and upgrade what you seem to think they will need...just basic computing (Microsoft office and internet) doesn't really require 8 gigs of ram.

i customised my own on hp's site and it came to about $438, i have a 10% off thing to best buy so it would be down to about $450

I might just do that cause the best buy one is still a little better and theres not free shipping from the site so really it would even out

and netbooks, i have one, but would never use one as my main computer and wouldnt want to do that to them either
