go to the library and look at consumer reports car issues. they have good information on new and used cars. that corolla sounds like a good deal. i don't know about price, but toyotas get great mileage and will last forever.

also look at used subaru imprezas, 2.5rs. and like only one person pointed out, honda makes some of the best cars out there, so do look at civics too.

i would personally look at the mazda protege5 for what you are looking for. they handle great, get good mileage and are reliable. plus they are a hatch, so they have good room and a roof rack.

there arent a whole lot of new cars/cars worth buying in the 10-12 G range. buy used and local, so you can check the car before you buy it. i would recomend a 2000-2003 toyota tacoma, a tundra if you can find a good deal. those trucks can really take a beating,they're super reliable, decsent gas mileage, plus 4wd.
