Best Car For Skiing?

I have an A4 with quattro and it gets the job done in snow.

but really, as long as it has

1) room for gear

2) 4 wheel or all wheel drive

3) the correct tires

it'll get the job done. In all honesty the tires you choose will have a greater impact on how it performs than most other aspects of a vehicle. Grab something you like that has some weight in the back (or if you get a truck get sandbags for the winter) and invest in some good snow tires. That will make a huge difference.
 
and you forgot to add someone who knows how to drive in snow.

but yeah, he pretty much sums it up. personally, i would love to get a hatchback wrx or 2000 ish outback wagon.
 
Sweet. A pickup would actually be good because I ride mtn. bikes all the time and those are the best for it, but I want something that can hold everything and more people.

and on the jeep at the beginning, is that a 4.0L V6?
im jw. i would never buy it because it is an auto.
 
I think I'll be excluding the BMW from my list, but jeeps seem to be very popular in this thread along with lightweight pickups, but those are crap in the snow and are too small for my liking. Need to have room for like 5 or 6 people and all of the gear.

anything that's not a car. think truck or suv. if you live in a location that get's more than a 6 inche blizzard you'll need ground clearence.
 
on a less serious note; if u want to ski in the summer and need to drive to the top of a mountain you might need somthing bigger. but maybe not. depends on your location. it's convient in Colorado.
 
subaru outback with some studs. I hit a random cloud driving up rabbit ears pass going 90 on a sharp curve (yeah im dumb), went 90 degrees 3 times and popped out of the cloud in the center of the road. I love my car.
 
We do get a decent amount of snow out here in Cali, so ground clearance could be somewhat important. Studs though are illegal in California. To the guy who posted the pictures of the batmobile, Ferrari, and snowcat, I choose the snowcat, then I can go wherever I want.
 
I am really suprised that no one else has figured this out, but the best value you are going to find in a used ski car is a late model AWD Chevy Astro Van for around $8K. Unlike the Voyager, the Astro is built on the S10 truck chassis, so it is much more burly than a car based van. Mine has two rows of bench seats - I have taken out the middle row so the interior is like a living room with a couch. I have a Yakima Skybox 21 on top to hold an incredible amount of cargo. You can sit inside and put on all your outerwear and boots without ever having to expose yourself to the weather. Multiple people can sleep in it overnight in a parking lot, it gets 18 mpg driving from Portland to Mt Hood (try that in a full sized pickup), has reasonable ground clearance and handles like a mountain goat on the ice.

Toyota 4Runner. Enough room to have you and your hommies. If you have to sleep in it there is plenty of room and it is 4 wheel drive
 
oh comon, a convertible bmw, how impractical, like man first off its rwd, and secondly the kid driving it looks like a rich yuppie from new hampshire

plus the plastic compound that makes up my hummer is way more stable than the bmw's, and its a two seater, remember we are trying to make intelligent suggestions as to the BEST car for winter for this kid okay
 
i drive a mercedes "vito"

front wheel drive, 105 hp, place for 8 chickz + 1 driver,

or the self made construction of the bed with a lotta room for skis freezer bbq...

dont know what u need for having fun...

this one handles the alps...awesome!

nothing special, but works great and used- cheap...

chevy caprice classic or buick roadmaster wagons, white with the wood on the side. now those are badass cars
 
hahah wow. Snow machine = Sled = Snowmobile.. not like "dude my Ranger is such a snowmachine!"

and I see no reason to ever buy a truck w/out 4wd.. It always shocks me when I see one that doesn't have it.
 
I think the general consensus here is subaru is very good all around but if you're thinking extreme get a jeep or truck and if you want to get stuck get something else.
 
hmmm thats tough, the audi will drive slightly better (better feel/ more stable at high speeds) but the wrx is a tiny bit more nimble. a4 has a much nicer interior, and a little more space. they both perform pretty similar in performance. and if you get the 1.8t then they both are pretty reliable. the audi engine though is a little better, it has more power all around while the wrx only has power when you are revving very high and the turbo has kicked in.

if i were you id probably go for the 1.8t a4. overall its just a much better built car, and you will be able to tell the difference when driving it. and since they have similar performance there isnt much reason to buy the wrx.

you really cant go wrong either way.
 
I love my jeep grand cherokee, its only fucked up once since ive had it. Pretty legit in the snow too if you have good tires, the AWD is nice. Super nice seat warmers too
