Best bicycle under 400$

Well I know approximetly jack shit about bicycles, I always had huffy's growing up and I havnt owned a bike for probably 10 years. Anyway I wanted to get a bike this summer to tool around town and trails, Any suggestions on a decent bike model or company that sells decent cheap bikes? I'm assuming I want a mountainbike but I don't know what to look for in quality of design, materials, suspension any of that shit, so someone please make a good recommendation

Hmmm, to tell you the truth, it is going to be hard to get a good full working hardtail for under 400$ unless you get like a MAD deal. But I prefer the feel of Kona's and Specialized.

TREK is reall awsome around 300$ 400$ minw was 400$ had it 3 years never a problem take it out all the time

Actualy my current weapon of choice is my winchester 7mm remmington magnum, the scopes a little cheesey (simmons) but I'm gonna get a tactical sniper scope this summer when I get some extra flow.

There was a guy in my old town who could shoot a 5 shot 5 inch group at 1000 yards with a 7mm

400 wont buy you jack. Trek makes great xc bikes, but you want to have at least 600 to spend. A cheap bike will have such junky components and weigh a ton. you may be able to buy a used bike from a few years ago for that much but it will still be lower end.

 
WOW, that's a good shot. I registered a headshot with a 300 winchester mag on a 5x5 bull elk this past fall from 345 yards. Wow, 1000 yards...yeah, wow.

I guess I'll answer your question better.

In your price range you will have very little in terms of quality. heres what to look for.

Fork: Rock shox, Manituo, Fox, Marzocchi

Frame: Aluminum (rigid feeling) or Cromo (softer feel)

Components: Shimano: Deore (low end), LX (mid), XT (higher), XTR (high end race) I dont know much about sram but they do make good stuff.

Drivertrain: Shimano deore and up, Raceface makes decent stuff as well

those are the basics to look at. Ride bikes to get would an idea what you like. you can change things out later if you want. STay away from disc brake at the price your looking at. You'll get shitty ones usually (the only exception is the Avid mechanical disc they are awsome)

If this is a just farting around town bike, a Trek 4300 or 3900 would be just fine. I ride a single speed surly 1x1 for my farting around urban bike. I built it up for about 900.

 
Go on Ebay and you can get a really good specialized or trek for under $400. Don't worry about whether the frame is really durable, it's not like you're hardcore.

if you are looking at a trail bike you should think about the specialized hardrocks. but if you want street look at konas, decently priced especially if you look on ebay. shred,stuff,roast,chute

 
Norco Katmandu maybe?

Anything made by Kona, Specialized, Norco, Trek, Giant, or Brodie. Buy it from a real bike shop. In those brands you'll probably only be able to afford a hardtail... and for $400 that's what you want.
