Best beginner DSLR

What would be the best all around DSLR camera that doesnt cost a shit ton of money for film and photography.

You may want to define "Doesn't cost a shit ton"

That said, if you're going to get into it, think of it as an investment. You don't want to grab the cheapest thing and then have to turn around and buy a new one because you outgrew it. I would suggest a Canon Rebel for getting started. You could get a second hand T2i for pretty cheap, under $300. But the extra $$ for a T3i is totally worth the flippy screen(:

On that note, I don't totally know what I'm talking about.

My friend got a Nikon 6500 for his first DSLR and it is pretty sick. At costco you can get the camera in a pack with a couple of lenses for pretty cheap I think.

Canon 1D-X

The Canon 1Dx is a sick camera but it comes with an equally sick price tag. It will cost you some $6,799.In my book, that would be pretty close to ”a shit ton of money”.

With that being said, the 1Dx works fine for both stills and filming. But is it a beginner DSLR? No.

You said that you are going to use it for BOTH filming and photography. OK, then. Here goes:

If you want to pay less (and I think you do), go for a used Canon 5D Mk II or a used 7D. Both are fine cameras and if you manage to find one in a good condition with a decent price, go for it.

And if you are going for a used camera, make sure that you get the shutter count from the seller. It's not something that will just show in the menus of a Canon camera, but if the seller is a legit one, they should know how to get it (I use a software available at www.eoscount.com).

For new cameras, there's the new Canon 70D. It has a focus system that works better for filming, but it's still a $1,199 camera.

But a good camera is an investment and it will likely deliver for quite a few years. Just depends on how serious you are about filming/photography. Ask yourself that first, and you'll soon know if it's worth it.

Hope it helps + good luck!

Hi Zoe,

Before making a decision & choosing your DSLR, we recommend you to consider other alternatives. DSLR cameras are not the only option!

Mirrorless cameras are great cameras - same quality of image (photographies or/and videos) and have tinier bodies than DSLRs. Therefore they're lighter and easier to carry around / travel with.

We created this http://whyDSLR.co.uk - a website that curates all the articles from trusted - sources such as Gizmodo, DP Review etc - about mirrorless cameras vs. DSLR cameras.

Obviously if you have any questions about mirrorless cameras (also called DSLM, CSC, MILC...), let us know!
