I have to write an essay on frankenstein, and my topic is "what does it means to be human"...any ideas onthe book or in general

you know your human when...

you can bring an entire species of animal to extinction

have the power to destroy the earth

enslave another species for the well-being of yourself (pets, farm animals)

etc...

One characteristic of being human is the ability to extend ourselves beyond our genetic programing. Frankienstein was nothing more than the compilation of other peoples parts but somewhere in that schmorgasboard he came to be. He was only peices of others but he came to be an individual, a distinct and unified whole.

Not to mention some of his actions in the novel were very compassionate, beging the reader to question who the really evil character was.

The ability to live in such a concious state where we can ponder our existance and anilyze our surroundings. To have intellectual dominance over all other forms of life, to withstand most disasters that wipe out entire species.
