Being a vegetarian?

enough to notice that far too many people lead a sedentary lifestyle to the point that its unhealthy, and to also notice you incorrectly changed tense halfway through your question..

i guess im up to 2 if you count my HS diploma

yeah.. humans have these for ripping up stubborn celery.

i eat it all.. fuck yeah... when it comes to beef.. every year.. me and my fam go to a farm and I myself shoot the cow. and we have it butcherd up for us. i dont eat pork except bacon rarely and chicken is easy to get from humane sources in oregon. but also in oregon. we have abudunt seafood. so that is my choce for meat. and yes seafood is meat. i have many veggie and vegan freinds. i was with this girl at a vegan soup cafe. and i was wearing feaux leather shoes. my god. i thouht this girl was gonna stab me... if its good eat it... hell. i eat bugs. when done right. bugs are good. and sustainable.

Now don't get me wrong, but I didn't read the huge amount of comments and their topic range (assuming there is one).

Straight to OP though. I'm a pescetarian (I'll eat seafood, and no, I don't want to get involved into the politics behind it).

Like you, I started when I moved out and went to school. It was a choice I had been thinking of for awhile though. My girlfriend last year was also pescetarian (she ate more raw food though), and it just wore off on me.

I don't drink milk any more, however; I'll still have dairy such as cheese and ice cream. I drink soy milk instead. I don't know why it's called soy milk, it is essentially just plant juice. I'll eat eggs, along with fish and other seafoods. I love my seafood more than any other food actually, and it's been like that even when I did still eat meat.

I buy a lot of fruits and vegetables, it seems to be my staple. Along with carbs such as bread and pasta.

Rice is a good filler too, but I haven't cooked rice since I moved out of res.

The thing about being any kind of vegetarian is managing your supplements such as protein, vitamins and iron. I'm not the best at it, but my health hasn't decreased at all.

Although you're a student, I'd recommend buying some supplements such as protein and all the other things that can be lacking from your diet once you make the switch.

I don't, but I make sure I get enough protein.

I've been a veggie for about 10 months, and I feel much better than I did before. It's not for everyone, and if you are thinking of just doing it because you don't think you can afford meat, you're going to have to be able to balance your budget a lot better. Meat isn't super expensive, you are just going to have to know how to shop.

I don't give a flying fuck if someone is a veg for health reasons, but the instant they throw out "the meat industry is cruel and inhumane" I pitch a fit. So many people are so uneducated about the industry and take the load of shit that groups like PETA and whatnot feed them. Animal "rights" groups like to take one little instance or one bad photograph and try to portray the entire industry as such. Its bullshit and gives people a very wrong impression.

I guarantee that I know more about the inner workings of the beef industry, from calf to carcass prep, than almost anyone on NS. I am majoring in livestock mgmt and industry with a focus on beef cattle, my father is a large animal vet who has specialized in food animal for many years and a feedlot advisor, and we are very close friends with Temple Grandin, who is the primary person who has improved the modern beef industry. I've also worked with cattle since a young age and have raised several beef calves. I've worked inside feedlots and packing plants and my career goal is centered around food animals.

People need to stop projecting human emotions onto animals, especially most food animals. A cow is a 1000-1700lb animal with a brain about the size of your fist. Their primary instincts are to be in a group. They have no clue what our intentions are regarding them, as long as they have food, shelter, a herd and are safe from predators, their basic needs are met.

Thats all the ranting I have for now, but I'm sure I'll think of more as this thread progresses.

Only thing I have to say to you is dear god please do not group people who care about humane/sustainable food industries into the "PETA" group..... there are radicals and extreme activists who taint (yes I said taint) the image of reasonable and intellectual humans in all realms. It's the same thing as the idiots who chain themselves to trees ruining the name of very practical environmentalists.

One more thing to add after seeing it come up several times in this thread. I'm pretty sure Seemeski said this as well but I'd like to reiterate.... if you have to take supplements as a vegetarian, in most cases, you are not eating a balanced diet. Some people just naturally have deficiencies and those are magnified with a vegetarian diet and in those cases (especially with iron) it's obviously okay to take supplements. You should never have to take protein supplements, though, as a vegetarian and if you do maybe it's not the lifestyle for you.

Even with the animal "abuse" put aside it is not that great to our environment. Someone brought it up and it's true. Crop land > grazing land. Grazing land does no good except give a huge amount of cows or animals a place to be kept until slaughtered. Using that land instead to grow crops that participate in the carbon and water cycle would be much more beneficial and sustainable.

EXACTLY.

Ecoterrorists don't represent all people who care for the environment, and PETA does not represent all people who care for a humane food industry.

Mmmhm, I suggested it, because you never know.

I haven't taken any sorts of supplements, and I have everyone questioning how I'm still healthy.

I'm not an idiot. I make sure I have everything in the food I eat. Most cases these days, the included supplements are listed right on the box.

Yaya wasn't it directing it towards you... you just happened to be the most recent person to mention it haha I just want to absolutely stress that if you need a supplement, chances are you don't have a healthy diet . : )

However they are one of the number one groups that puts out anti-food animal information. Hence why I use them as an example.

the majority of food animals are not on large amounts of grazing land, and instead eat silage or grain that is raised on *gasp* crop land.

I tried to be a vegetarian but it just didnt work out for me too well. It honestly a healthier thing to do.

And by that no I don't mean what you are thinking......

I mean I will take a video camera, set it up and record so all of NS can see, then I will take the flashlight to get proper light on the area I will be filming. Then comes the fun. I will then take a rope, tie it to my penis (without the camera seeing my penis, and with my fist i will pull the rope so hard i will then do a back flip.

no offense but every vegetarian girl i know looks unhealty. no muscle definition what so ever just skin fat and bone

vegetarians are FUCKING pussy bitchz...

you're ignorance can only be overcome by your stupidity.

it is not only un-healthy, it is just dumb not to take advantage of the immense wild/captive animals available for consumption.

YOU ARE A JACKASS.

Most of this incoherent waffle is why I'd rather hang out with other animals than civilized humans. Civilized humanity is totally and dictionary definably insane.

Haha, fun fun fun, I made this thread for two reasons.

#1: To hear the few sensible intelligent individuals advice. For those of you that put thought into well constructed and obviously well educated responses, I appreciate it.

#2: To hear a bunch of ignorant assholes comment with the most moronic, ignorant and half-assed remarks. So I thank all of you for entertaining me.

Do you really think I'm going to make a decision based on a skiing website filled with prepubescent boys and poorly educated "mature" adults. (Obviously there are plenty of people here that don't fit into this category too, so I do respect the select few)

win

i live in Central Montana and we are the hub of beef cattle and farming for our area. i agree people are uneducated about the beef industry and have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to raising and slaughtering cattle.

for the size of a cow they really are very stupid.

like you said, you can be a vegetarian for health reasons but i also get pissed off when people claim the meat industry is cruel and inhumane, not to mention all the bi-products we get from beef cattle, like the leather used for shoes that people walk around in when they are protesting the meat industry. haha

Holy shit, this rant scares me. The jargon used emphasizes a life institutionalized by an industry that shouldn't exist. I feel sorry for you.

I agree with most of what you say but I think we need "radicals" like people who chain themselves to trees.

Deforesters/slaughterhouse owners/miners/industrial polluters aren't going to stop doing what they are doing coz a few people say it's wrong and stop consuming their "products". I wholeheartedly encourage people to chain themselves to trees, blow up dams with explosives, slaughter the slaughter house owners, pollute the polluters. If only I wasnt so scared of jail I would. But then again i'm not a pacifist, I believe violence has a place. These corner stone industries of modern western civilisation use it intrinsically on a daily basis and when someone suggests something like blowing up a dam, it is met with utter disgust and contempt. Once again I say that this culture is totally and dictionary definably insane. Look it up.

WHAT A SURPRISE, THIS THREAD TURNED INTO A "VEGETARIANS ARE FAGS VS. HUMANS ARE SCUM" DISCUSSION. I'M DEEPLY SHOCKED AND I DID NOT SEE THAT COMING!
