Being a thug

did you even read a word i wrote??

I never once said it was unacceptable. In fact i specifically said if you want

to dress like an idiot thats fine, and that i understand.

I never once said i know every skier in the world personally and i struggle to

understand where you came to that conclusion or what significance it has on

this conversation.

I might disagree with you, but im certainly not stupid, nor am i insecure about

myself.

insecurities are people who act and dress like someone else to fit in, ie: people

that mimic every footstep a pro takes.

I also never said it was a necessity for society to accept us, i did however,

give reasons as to WHY I THINK they dont.

Im perplexed as to how you came to the conclusion that your definition of

freeskiing is the same as mine. your first point was being yourself. As i

stated before, dressing and acting like a thug is not being yourself. I never

once saw a kid wearing tallt's down to their knees until pros started doing it.

dont give me this being yourself bullshit when youre not being yourself, youre

acting like someone else that youre not.

Last answer:

im saying you look like a fuckin clown

This is something that is not backed with any sort of fact whatsoever.

This is scenes from Whiskey 1.

I'm not totally positive on the exact release date, but I am relatively sure it was mid-late '90s (if someone could check this that would be awesome).

Snowboarding was added to the Olympics in 1998. Hell, newschool skiing STARTED because skiers were acting too stiff and stuck up (Read: not looking like 'fuckin retards' as you put it). They saw snowboarding doing exactly this and not only took half of the market share in the snowsports industry, but launched Winter X-games, got into the Olympics, had video games made about them, and turned people like Shawn White into international superheros.

You can state that you think white kids acting gangster is stupid... and that is perfectly fine. That is personal taste - some people think that acting like a hippy is stupid... or hipster... or too city... or too gay... or too masculine... or too feminine....

However what you can't do is state that it is harming the sport to act like this. That is completely flawed logic, which is backed up by absolutely no proof whatsoever. Fashion is ridiculous no matter what, and the main stream is actually attracted to counter-culture behavior. That is what makes action sport fashion permeate to the rest of the world, and what made action sports explode in popularity so much over the years.

You also can not say that you don't want everyone to fit into a cookie cutter mould, yet to state that they should not dress in one specific manner. You either support freedom of expression or you don't - there is no middle ground on this issue.

Do what you want to do. Like, it isn't hurting anybody if someone wants to look 'gangsta' on the hill. Let people do waht they want and worry about yourselves.

Double post but, just worry about yourselves. When I was in middle school, I went through this emo phase. I was into the whole straightened hair and skin tight jeans thing for about two years. Eventually I grew out of it and realised how rediculous I looked, but I'm totally fine with it all because I feel like it was a stage in growing up for me. I don't know if this is making any sense to anyone but just let people do what they want and dress how they want, because eventually they will grow outn of it. So let the 'thugs' enjoy it while they can.

Oh really, who says? The guy that dresses like all the pro's that don't wear tall t's and baggy stuff? Man you're so intent on defining what other people should do/wear, it's fucking pathetic. You explain that dressing "thug" or acting "thug" is not being yourself, but again I state the obvious questions: Why? How is it that you know this for a fact? Why do you get to decide that this is the way it is?

That is why I made the argument that you act like you know every single skier personally, or at least the ones that we are talking about, simply because you seem quite comfortable to speak on their behalf. It would be a whole different thing if you just said that you don't like it, but you proceed to push the above argument, which makes your whole point weak and kinda sad. I don't try to hate on you wearing all size M stuff, and I have no desire to, because, surprise surprise, it's your own damn business!

Hahahha... dude I went through a goth phase for about 6 months. While I was in it I thought I was expressing myself, but one day I looked in the mirror and was like "Bro, you look like a fucking idiot."

Not to mention it probably took me more time to put on makeup in the morning than the fucking captain of the cheerleading team.

good thing you can take jokes... but regardless i think baggy clothes look much better than tight pants/jacket. when kids have baggy stuff things look way smoother and flowy than the akward chicken legs of skiinny pants. I wear baggy stuff cause i think it looks better, but i dont actually think im ghetto, i undertsand im a white kid skiing

I wear loose fit shit too, that is much different than wearing a belt so the waist of your pants is at your knees while your jacket is XXXL and you are 5' 6" 150lbs. Just sick of the "thug mentality" in skiing, it has already ruined the NBA and NFL and it doesn't need to do the same to this sport.

Trends come and go. Trust me, it will not ruin a sport.

I mean for christ's sake people... just look at snowboarding. Its perfectly fine and healthy, very fashion-forward and they *gasp* survived a gangster phase.

You need to realize there isn't much of a difference from Skiing to snowboarding, we're jsut a few years behind.

In no time its going to be tight jeans everywhere, including the BC and everyone is going to be flipping out about waterproofing and how these crazy kids are disrespecting hypothermia or something.

wut??

i cant even talk to you anymore your responses make so little sense.

you assume, and then put a whole load of words into my mouth.

dosnt mean you "won", it means i cant have a conversation with someone who can not comprehend information.

when you want to learn how to absorb information and answer coherently we can carry on this conversation.

Until then i say good day sir.

I think on both sides things got too heated there.

Keep it to debate instead of insults and it makes this type of a discussion way more fun.

nothing's better than that put-off confusion when i, being dressed in tall hoodies and such, act like a decent human being to people who weren't expecting it at all from a park rat

This is kind of what i was trying to say.

I realise its just a phase. i never told anyone they CANT dress like thugs, i was merely reminding them they look like idiots. One day theyll grow out of it.

And Mr. Bishop, my ideas were simply that, ideas, posted on a ski forum, for other skiers to read.

i was unaware i was writing my thesis paper and had to back up all my points with appropriate refferences.

Can i prove that dressing like a thug is hurting skiing? no, of course not.

Can i speculate and toss out the idea out there that outsiders look at us like idiots. Yes, i can, and i did.

If any of you actually bothered to read my original post (or to understand it) you would notice i said, loud and clear, if you want to dress like an idiot thats fine. what i have a problem with is the kids that act and talk all gangster hard.

dress how you want to dress, ya, whatever.

but if you step to me all hard as fuck like for "snaking your line dog" ill punch you right in the dick.

Ah, but you completely derailed any part of your post being listened to by using the word 'idiot'. That makes you turn from a debater to a shit-slinging monkey.

Good debates are fun and informative. Shit slinging on the internet is a waste of time.

This is why Bishop is the man, he throws logic at you with facts and it is tough to argue. Thanks for the perspective.

Hmm, i see your point, but i think maybe you might have misinterpreted my using of the word idiots.

I personally see a big difference between calling someone directly an idiot vs telling a wide group of people that they dress like idiots.

but like i said, personally, so maybe thats just me.

i literally ski with a pistol tucked neatly in my pants just in case it goes down in my local, small to medium sized park.

Whoa whoa whoa

You've never acted a certain way just for fun? Acting like a thug on skis is like a shy person cheering at a football game. It gives you a chance to explore your own personality when you would normally be judged for it. Skiing is an escape for most people on here, for some people it's an escape from the personality that society has beaten into them. So yes, it may seem silly for rich white kids to act gangster, but how else will they know what it feels like, how else will they be able to explore themselves in such a complete way?

shy people cant cheer??

ive got a plant on my desk that could think of a better example than that.

Man, if I had a penny for every time someone claimed the "You just don't get what I'm saying, so I don't wanna talk to you" defense, i'd be a rich man. It's just too easy.

I really don't think that I assumed anything, but that I responded quite coherently to what you were saying, but please enlighten me as to where I put words in your mouth.

Problem is that the premise of your argument is that, factually, anyone dressing like a "thug" dresses like an idiot. This is however your own subjective view, not a fact. So when you continually try to pass it of as a fact, your argument really doesn't stand very strong. That is basically what I have a problem with.

And, like Bishop said, using the word idiot doesn't get you very far, and you don't come of as someone trying to present a coherent argument, bus as a, and I quote "shit slinging monkey".

For real if you just do you on and off the hill then no one will disrespect you. If you're a complete assclown on hill and some sweater vest preppy mommas boy off hill then yeah you're bond to get some hate. But like you said just bee who you want. No matter where you go there will be someone that hates you even of you're doing everything right so just stop caring if people hate you.

I'm really starting to get mad sick of all the kids on this website trying to act like they smoke hardcore and shit. You all just a bunch of punks. Aint nobody here smoke as much as me.

you're fucking stupid and a hypocrite. why do you care how people dress? who says people have to dress to match their personality? who are you to say someones not being themselves because they dress differently? listen to yourself, think about what you're saying, then do us all a favor and shut the fuck up.

Real thugs dont ski! have you ever been to harlem, or compton and overhear a conversation about their trip to Breck, or the new level 1 movie?

its honestly not a big deal. no one gives a fuck what you wear. please ACT like you understand.

I spent some time in Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens this summer. Drove through harlem as well. I wear tall t's and you better believe I was wearing them then. People, in general, give not a fuck what you wear. Oh my shit, please go wear some camo on a military base i fuckinnnnnnn dare you. Go wear a carhartt in the countryside you won't!!!
