There's a lot of hate going around for middle class white kids acting like thugs when they put on a pair of skis in the park. I, myself, am a white guy coming from a well-to-do family and going to a well-renown university. Frankly, I am educated, privileged, and well-cultured. That being said, when I step in to my twin tips I like to put on a little bit of attitude and act like I own the place.

People give THall shit for the Rasta persona. But I think if he wants to throw skis, weed, Montana, and Jamaica in a blender, then he should go for it. Yeah, it's weird, but it makes him him.We're all posers in some way. If you're a white guy listening to rap, you're a poser. If you are a part of freeski culture, then you are posing the skate culture.

As long as you're having a good time being yourself, I think you should be able to throw whatever flavor you want into your lifestyle. If that means wearing your bibs to your knees, afterbanging, and flashing random gang signs at the camera, so be it. Also, we have to make up for the lack of black people on the slopes somehow.

Honestly, take the chip off your shoulder and people will treat you like an actual person. When you act like a punk hardass, people will shit on your face all day long because nobody likes a hardass- especially skiing. You're a rich white kid, just be nice and stop pretending to be something you aren't.
 
i find that when i act the same way on the hill as i do everywhere else no one gives me shit for anything.

I know plenty of white skier kids that are poor come from nothing grew up fighting and have had to sell drugs to eat. They're not "thugs" but they certainly weren't brought up with new gear every year hanging out with TJ Burke and Bryce Kellogg in aspen. Point is mind your own business chances are you don't know shit about the guy your hating on.

Actually no one really ever gives me any shit. I'm not out there to make a scene; ideally, people usually just laugh when they see me because they can see how damn good of a time I'm having. All I'm saying is there's nothing wrong with skiing with a little bit of swag, and being mad at the world has nothing to do with thug as I meant it.

Here are a few truths:

-Everybody likes a hardass. Either that or Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee, and Sylvester Stalone are actually pussies that people can't stand.

-Skiiing like a hardass is a good thing.

-You might ski more like a hardass if you close your eyes and pretend you are Chuck Norris, Bruce Lee, or Sylvester Stalone.

-Freeski culture borrows from all kinds of scenes that don't really have anything to do with each other. Those scenes include skate culture, white people's perception of the hood, middle school, playgrounds with play equipment for the amusement of children, the first Carpe Diem scene in Dead Poets Society, Andy Parry's subconscious, golf courses, amusement parks, the eighties, Youtube, EA Sports, nature, the stock market, dancing, and college. If you don't realize that, you might think about going to Starbucks and pretending to read a book for several hours.

-Action sports of every type are a lot more fun if you are a little bit cocky.

-I like to party.

-You might get laid by a girlski if you ski like a hardass.

-I'm not racist.

-I'm accepting of all personality types if they are positive.

-Charge rails like fucking plastic, and you'll get some credit.

-I'm a rich white kid who is definitely pretending to be something I'm not.

-Pretending to be something you're not is not necessarily something bad. Anyway, it allows us to put planks on our feet and get weird.

-Did I mention that you should try to ski like a hardass whenever possible? The next time you're going up a ski lift and you're thinking, "Hmmmm. What should I do on this next glorious run?" you should probably do whatever you're going to do like a hardass.

But really guys, if you ever get a day with me on the slopes, you're just going to see another guy who likes eating shit a lot. But I eat shit like a hardass.
 
I understand the point and definitely agree. Not saying skiing like a cocky thug is cool. But bringing in whatever flavor style or whatever to have a good time then whatever.

If you hating on this guy, you mine as well hate on pretty much the entire stept crew. Im sure the majority of them came from white middle to upper class families, yet they act very gangster.

This post probably wont prove anything, and im probably just wasting time, but If people are too look at the situation with a little more of a open mind, rather than being cemented to their ideas that people can only act as their stereotype would.
 
If someone can afford to ski,I find it very hard to believe that person also has to " sell drugs to eat." Mabeye if you are ski bumming, but thats not really being "poor," because you could go and get a full time job anyday, you are just too lazy or whatever. Ski bum poorness is self inflicted, not something you were born into and couldn't rise out of.
 
create your own persona, keep a positive attitude, and dont through good energy and bad. if someone hates....haters gonna hate, keep smiling and ridin. Its just about the fun. just be u and fuck the bullshit.
 
Why is that hard to believe, you see kids skating, riding BMX, playing Basketball/football/Baseball that all come from rough backgrounds and do shit on the side even though they are doing sports as well. I mean, if you come from somewhere where there's a hill right there, then skiing isn't so inaccessible as you guys make it out to be. I mean, in the spirit of being from the wrong side of the tracks, you just steal your equipment and sneak on the lifts, and bam! you're skiing! I agree that this is not a typical sport for a young "thug" to pick up, but I'm sure it happens all the same. Thus this argument that because skiing is only accessible to well off white people, and therefore anyone participating are not allowed to act "thug", simply just doesn't hold up. By the way, doesn't a lot of "thugs", at least the successful ones, have quite a lot of money to spend? Where I come from most of them do, so they jet of on ski holidays all the time.

I grew up in a neighborhood with a lot of crime, yet my parents were middle class, who tried to give me a good upbringing. However I found it much more alluring to run with all the bad boys and I got caught up in all types of shit, and ended up going to jail. When I turned 22 I found skiing, and never looked back. I simply just found something where I could direct all this energy, and I haven't broken the law since (i'm 32). Am I allowed to act "thug"?

All in all, this comes down to people having to stop being so fuckin preoccupied about how other people act. If it isn't hurting anyone, what the fuck is the harm? It's no more fake than you trying to impress a girl by talking shit, or you pretending to care about school. We all take on personas, and sometimes these personas may be more or less original, sometimes they're not, point is it's normal human behavior, so get the fuck over it!

I never said that less fortunate kids don't get into skiing, I just find the situation mallone described to be very unlikely.
 
So it's okay to act like a ninja (I suspect most skiers are, in fact, not ninjas) but it's not okay to act like a "thug"? I'm confused?

But what if my way of loving freeskiing is acting thug, or like a ninja? And you still need to explain the ninja thing, it doesn't make sense. Is acting like a ninja not actually the same as acting like a ninja where you come from?

if you want to dress like an idiot thats cool, i understand, do your own thing. its the kids that talk AND act like they are actually in some fuckin gang, and if you poach their line they actually just might shoot you all hard as fuck like.

everyone says oh im just doing my own thing, im just being original. no youre fuckin not. acting like a thug was not your idea. you saw a pro do it, you copied them cause you think its cool. so dont say its originality. anyone can flick on a movie and copy what the pros are doing.

im not saying everyone has to fit the same cookie cutter skier molding. but freeskiers are the first kind of skiers to cry about skiing not receiving any attention or credibility. why did it take pipe so long to get into olympics, why dont we have slopestyle, why does xgames blow?

i think its difficult for people outside of freestyle skiing to take us seriously when pros have a t-shirt down to their ankles and are dropping fbombs every two seconds talkin all wangsta like.

people outside of skiing think were all a bunch of fuckin retards.

personally, when i go skiing, i dont ACT a certain way. i BE me.

Again, it's very paradoxical that you say that everyone should act/dress like themselves, yet a certain way of acting/dressing is unacceptable to you. You talk like you know every skier in the world personally, and can ascertain the level of "realness" in their way of acting/dressing. Well, I hate to break it to you, you don't. Stop acting like you do, because it is making you look stupid. And stop being so insecure about yourself that you need to go on here to shit on others for doing what they want. Do your own thing, and as long as it doesn't hurt others, then it's all good.

You also talk of acceptance from society in general, and I am perplexed by how willing you are to dispense of everything freeskiing is (i.e being yourself, being free) to gain this acceptance. So we should all give up our personal freedom to be what we wanna be, so that society will accept us? Fuck that shit, if that's the price, then i'm for one am not buying! I will continue to act the way I want to, and dress the way I want to, and if that means not being accepted by society, then so be it. Anyway, I'm sure they'll come around at one point anyway, just like they have with skating, surfing etc.

Last question.
