begginning on rails

i've just started to ride rails and could use some tips on how to do it correctly. i can ride strait rails, but am not too comfortable doing so. I feel like i'm going to slip out a lot of the times, and have tons of trouble keeping my weight forward? Any tips or help would be appreciated. thanks

if you can ride straight rails cleanly and you're coming off switch then it sounds like you just need to practice a lot and get more comfortable.....metal is a completely different surface than snow and it just takes some getting used to. are you doing rails with gaps to them yet or are you still just doing ones with the lip connected to the rail? (they have quite a few of those where i ski). practice going off lips and jumping onto the rail instead of sliding onto it (i dunno where you're at as far as that goes but that was a step i had to take). just hit rails for a whole day/week and you'll have them so dialed you'll get bored with straight ones

look with your eyes at the end of the rail, while leaning into it but not too far...

there's a lot of those rails that are actually connected to the lips, but i actually find it easier when their is a gap to clear between the lip and the rail..... also i've only come off switch a few times.

just lean forward, I suck to but what works for me is actually trying to fall over the front of my skis, like not off the rail but into it, like over my skis! just takes alot of practice!

I have no time for shinanagans, No TIME!

just commit and focus on the end of the rail i did suck but now im not bad but it takes a shitloada practice like hiting a rail everyday for atleast one season

just find some 20 foot long flat rail that's not too high off the ground and hike it all day. you have to be confident. if you can be confident, then you will win. you can't set any sort of edge on a rail, so just don't lean back at all and stay centered over both skis. have fun.

my level of radness... it just can't... be quantified.

go for it and don't look at your feet look at the end of the rail don't be scared and its sooo simple dude

just do a shit load of rails, granted your gonna fall a few times, just eep trying everyones a lil sketch teh first few tiems

ya thats all there is to it, just do rails a ton and youll get more comfortable on them, work on getting on from a jump and from the side, get good with switch out, and just keep getting more calm and comfortable on them, and with that your stance will get better

ya, and COMMIT, dont but yourself

this is what i find helps, when you come up to the rail get some reasonable speed, and spread your legs a little more than shoulder width, and as your coming towards the rail make sure that its centered right between your legs (otherwise you will most likely come off the rail early) then one you have all that just get on the rail, having your legs spread so wide should help with the balance too, and make sure you look at the end of the rail when you do it

Duff Man: Duff Man... says a lot of things! Oh, yeah!

make sure you keep your speed up and that you turn completely 90 cuz if you don't that will cause you to start sliding off. practice practice practice...and don't over think cause if you do you will fuck up

look at the end of the rail slide it clean then 450 out and be like fuck yea bitches

The shit hasnt even begun to hit the fan

WHen i was first learning i did something kind of different and it seemed to help. I took a rail really low to the ground and practiced a lot on it. After I could do it without thinking, i practiced jumping on to it purposely messing up. As in, not always landing perfectly. This taught me how to recover from lost balance or regain my stance if i started to slip. It seeemd to help a lot.

yeah ive been just trying everything, but i managed to land on my hands this season and broke my thumb on one hand, and bruised my whole hand on the other. I think ill try what ^ said. would allow you to know what it feels like to fuck up, since thats probably the scariest part of a rail, fallin off

i sorta still have that leaning back problem. I noticed from videos of me that i was leaning way far back, because i guess i was trying to ride onto the rail, but because it happened to be attached to the lip. but i find that with gaps it's much easier, because it forces me really pop off it, then you land flat and have ur balanced centered more when you start sliding. even with the rails with no gap, still pretend there's a gap so you force yourself to pop onto the rail. it helps, takes alot of work, but it helps.

boxes help a crap load, u can practice ur center point, and different styles.

Build a 10 ft pvc rail because its cheap and quick to make. PVC is great for beginers because it slides a SHITLOAD faster than metal and it really teaches you to not lean back. If you build one than you can do it all the time and it wont take long before youll be killing that bitch.

You think PVC pipe slides faster? Even when I pop on and land with my bases flat, my edges still dig in and shave away the pipe. It slid really slow when I did it. Oh well. we just elevated a piece of PVC like 2 ft off the ground and it didnt work too well.

MY pvc slides a lot faster than the metal rails that I have been on. That probly doesnt mean much though because the metal rails at my mountain are stickier than glue.
