I need some advice on learnin how to ski actually. My bf is a wicked good skier and he took me. My first time ever and I fell like 30 times lol i got better through the day cuz who wouldnt but i still want to be able to ski instead of just trying not to kill my self lol any good advice???

snowboard?

in all seriousness, it takes way less time to get good at snowboarding. skiing takes a while to get good at.

post as much as you can on NS. if you have over 5000 posts by next winter, chances are that you will be better then your bf

i was told that skiing is easier to learn and harder to like master and then snowboarding was harder to lean but easier to get real good at after ya know it

and i dont want to be better than my bf cuz that wont happen hes like amazing

what youve been told is true, skiing is easier to start off and to learn for the most part. but there are some odd incidents with certain people that is the opposite

he was actually really good at teaching me, and i feel kinda stupid gettin lessons cuz im kinda too old lol like all the lessons were little kids and im almost 20

private lesson, just....try and stand up...(kevin james)

if you wanna cry do the pizza pie

but its the french fry

that puts the gleam in your bf's eye.

first off you better have twintips,

then make sure to ski switch atleast 1/2 the time, it makes not skiing switch seem easy and skiing switch pretty easy

Instructors are fuckin' patient!!!

I basically wasted 3 months of skiing to ski instructing this past season, time I would have loved to spend destroying powder lines or hittin' up the park.

I did skip a lot of days though haha.

But to the thread maker, you wanna know the basics? Here's PSIA standard basics:

Level 1.

Get used to the boots. Walk around in your boots, try jumping around, flexing the boot, practicing wedge without skis on. Get 1 ski on and slide around on it. Practice the wedge with 1 ski. Get both skis on and practice walking around, sidestepping, maybe the harringbone (the V walk uphill). Finally, once they can walk, a straight run down a shallow hill, to a wedge stop if they can.

Level 2.

Go work on wedge stops, and maybe wedge turns. If you have a ropetow or a T-bar or something easy like that (not a chairlift) Use that. To wedge turn, make a wedge, and push down using your opposite big toe (Right big toe to go left, Left big toe to go right... You get the idea). To go up a rope tow or T-bar, BE SURE YOUR SKIS ARE STRAIGHT!! No idea how many 4 year olds I had to pick up... ****ers!!! Haha sorry... Jea. Wedge turns and weave across the hill, don't go straight down or you'll lose control.

Level 3.

Connected wedge turns (Wedge Christie) Begin wedge turns and turn from staying wedge when you traverse the hill to parallel across the hill. So you do a wedge turn for the turn, and then a parallel traverse (your skis parallel).

Level 4.

Improved Wedge Christie. Begin switching to parallel turns sooner, so about half of your turn is wedge turn, half is parallel. This sets you up for parallel turns.

Level 5.

Parallel turns. Jea. Parallel turns where you just carve on your inside (Uphill) edges.

That's basically it. If there are any other instructors who care to criticize me on not being perfect in my memorization of the book of ill-favored ski teaching mcgayness, suck my balls. I hate teaching ahahaha

P.S. that took fucking forever to type...

ya its so hard to teach people u know.

u coould just learn by watching people. thats what i did. it took me like 2 1/2 years to learn how to ski right tho.

You're likely to end up arguing if he's teaching you. I know he did for that day, but it'd be much better to get an instructor. Then you get to surprise him with how much you've improved :D

mtbakerteacher, thanks

i dont really have time for an instructor cuz i only got a month off from college during the winter and this past winter sucked hard core cuz we didnt get snow till like the first weekend in january... maybe ill just stick to pizza-ing my way down till i can find more time to actaully learn properly....

any other advice like little things to keep in mind???

but really, you can find the time to get a few basic lessons to show you what you need to know, and then just ski as much as you can on your own or with other people, and eventually youll get better, trust me. A few lessons wont hurt, even experienced skiiers take lessons. And dont be afraid of taking a lesson either, i taught 25 year old MIT graduate students who had never even been on ski's before.

that's not true. skiiers just think that "its easier to master" but then the technicality that can go into snowboarding goes a long way. mastering snowboarding is not easy.

^^^ anyone who is active and not a couch potato can pick up snowboarding easily. I have been teaching it for 7 years, and I can get someone who is physically fit to be making linked S turns in an hour.

four words: pizza and french fries. thats pretty much all you need to know. just start slow on mellow terrain and work on long wide turns.

thats really funny cuz pretty much thats all i did for 7 straight hours, i couldnt move the next day my legs were so sore lol and ya cant go fast and do different things with pizza-ing all damn day lol

im an instructor, 8 week programs we have are for kids, but half of the lessons i talk were walk in privates, i taught people up to 50 years old how to ski. dont be embarassed at all!

no hes not, you just think he is. go take lessons................. you are a 20 year old female? just request a male instructor. seriously.

^lol no he really was, like the first time i went down i fell like 15 times and it was funny and such and then he showed me what to do and i fell only 3 times the next time down

but yea i get what your saying and why exactly am i suposed to request a male instructor???

I agree with Papasteeze. NEVER have a significant other teach you the sport. A lesson is always the better choice. A private lesson is even better.

Yea thats how i was i use to ski then i found this amazing thing called a snowboard and ive never even touched a pair of bitch sticks since!
