Been skiing for 20 years. Buying a snowboard.

Don't hate if you don't like snowboarding, skiing and snowboarding are both WONDERFUL sports, everyone's out on the mountain doing the same thing, having a good time and obtaining that sense of freedom that cannot be obtain anywhere else in the world. So if you're gonna say something negative, shut the fuck up in advance.

I'm 22 years, 6' tall, and 210 lbs. I grew up ski racing, then, like most kids, gravitated towards the freestyle/freeride scene around age 13 or 14. I never really got too deep into the "newschool" scene but still love throwing in one or two park laps a day. I've torn my ACL/Meniscus skiing twice in the last 3 years, doctor says it's full strength, but that is what he said the first time i rehabbed it. So don't get me wrong, skiing is still my passion and i'm not giving it up by any means. I'm just looking into getting a nice snowboard cause it'll have less impact on my right knee seeing that i'm goofy footed (at least that's what the doc. told me, but hell, he's been wrong before.)

Anyways, I really do love snowboarding too, so any suggestions for a solid rockered (or whatever the fuck they are calling) board for someone that is 6 foot and 210 lbs?

thanks!

A couple buddies I shred with use the Skate Banana, they seem pretty sick, and you'd probably want like a 157 ish but with a rockered board you could probably get away with a 155 or a bit shorter than that even. With a 157 at your height you could still shred park and ride pow with little problem. Shorter boards are sweet since you can throw'em around where as bigger boards, in my experience are more annoying to turn (I'm a small guy though).
I'd recommend other companies but I don't want to praise boards I haven't ridden or have had buddy's ride.
I (140lbs/5'8) personally ride a Rome Garage Rocker 152 and that thing is sweet, I love it, rocker is sick for shreddin pow and lets you press and butter around no problem (some people think of it as cheating but whatever). Its a noodle though, not sure if someone @ 6' would want something that soft.
The Skate Banana on the other hand is a bit more stiff and would have more pop and probably more stable when you bomb but it all comes down to preference, thats what I do now anyways.

Depends what kind of boarding you are looking to do. Burton makes some great all mountain and powder boards. That is what I ride. But if you are looking more for park, look at lib tech, capita or stepchild.

I once thought snowboarding was going to be the better idea..... Then I dislocated my hip. Then I dislocated it again. Then I hurt my knee.
I took up skiing again.

my best bud loves the rossignol retox...had last years and then got this years from a demo rep with the matching rossi bindings.

Rossignol_retox_snowboard_2012.jpg

He also rocked the K2 world wide weapons for a while with the same tech nine marc frank montoya bindings.

It depends on what you want to ride, but if your saying you mostly freeride and do a little park, maybe look into the Capita black snowboard of death (for more charging/ freeride oriented) or the capita indoor survival for a little more park oriented board.

Ive been looking at getting one of these for next year, my horrorscope is great for jibing but i need something for the rest of the mountain

ok well im 6'4 170, and i dislike rocker alot because on all of them i have tried you loose all of the pop. im riding a capita stairmaster extreme wide right now, 156. so its below my chin. (i find park better with a smaller board) so youd probably want a 157 ish. and for all mountain use if you do want the rocker technology, the best ive ridden where you can still carve and so on was a never summer evo. http://http://neversummer.com/snow/snowboards/evo/

I have also ridden a capita horroscope, it was pretty soft so for someone now wanting to always be pressing rails and so on i wouldnt reccomend it. from capita this is a great all mountain board. http://http://www.capitasnowboarding.com/snowboards/black-snowboard-of-death

finally one of the last boards that i would say is a good all around one that is going to last a long time because of their sidewall technology is rides Slackcountry UL. it has their hi rise rocker, there is a picture and explaination on the site. http://http://ridesnowboards.com/snowboards/slackcountry-ul

another thing that i may have missed in the orig post, depending on your foot size you may need a wide board, and more and more companies are starting to make this extra board for the guy with big feet like me. i hope this helps you out.

K2 WWW Rocker. Great soft board for jibbing and learning. I presume you're not gonna be hucking it but it's also fine on jumps n pretty good pow board bc of the rocker. My buddy who's also 6 feet, maybe a bit bigger got it, and he's got huge feet size 13/14 and they got it in wide. He really likes it. Jus my suggestion, but there's tons of boards out there. Lot's are available for demo's from shops/ demo days at the mountain.

thanks guys, some helpful posts in here.

I actually have pretty small feet, about 9 or a 10 so i dont think i'll be needing a wide.

What do you guys think about the less impact on my right knee if i ride goofy footed, i know there is obviously still chance of reinjury, but the more precautions i can take in the next few years the better. I feel like i'll be way less prone to twisting my knee in crazy directions, especially since i have not been snowboarding my whole life, so i'm not gonna be throwin down right of the bat. I mean, whenever i get on a snowboard i still feel pretty damn comfortable and start charging it after i warm up, i just think i'll be more cautious and aware, combined with the fact that my knees cant spread in every which way as easy might be nice. Does that make sense? (i just woke up so that post might be a little hard to understand)

i got into snowboarding around the same time i got into skiing park. i progressed way faster in park on skis than on my board. eventually i got frustrated when i went to the park on my board and couldnt do half the stuff i could on skis, so i sold my board at the beginning of last season.

snowboarding takes like 2 seconds to learn but its hard to land good tricks

Personally i love Rome SDS boards. I ride the Rome Agent, its a great board so far my favorite of all the boards ive had/ridden.

and i ride these bindings, soft and comfy dont make ur feet go numb

if you have big feet you should definately try to get a wide model of whatever board your looking to get. My biggest mistake in buying my board was that it wasn't a wide board and now my toe and heel sometimes dig in and slow me down when i take deep turns.

pretty much this. the skate banana is definitely one of the most fun and playful boards out there, and it still rocks in deep pow. if you're willing to maybe break the bank a bit, snag one.

i have a 156 wide park pickle from the 09/10 that is in really good condition. It has flux rk30 bindings on it. Shoot me a pm if your interested and i will put some pics up.

I've been skiing since the fourth grade and I tried snowboarding this year, it was really hard for me, its hard to get used to when you've been skiing for so long. But its not impossible! Good luck!

the helgasons fuck yeaa, but they are going to be really soft flex from what ive heard, and for my all mountain board, being taller than he is i dont want a soft board. medium flex is good though.

well from what it sounds like you are an intermediate to expert rider, so your knee shouldnt take that much of a beating. since you arent learning how to turn anymore you will be more centered on your turnes so you dont have all of your weight on yourfront foot during your turns as the beginners are.hope this helps.

Nah. Get Lib Tech if you're going Mervin.

But yeah any Lib is solid. I see a lot of bigger guys riding them, idk why though. But check out the Skate Banana and the BTX probably around 157. Also if you only take a lap or two in the park, don't get some rockered buttery jib stick, look for a free ride or all mountain board is probably your best bet.

completely agree on the skiing/snowboarding thing
http://www.snowboard-review.com/snowboard_reviews/review/riders_choice_c2_btx/check that out. i got a 162 wide and i've literally got the same body build as you. Floats in the powder, handles well on ice, and is pretty sick in park. a
good all around board
if youre wanting a park-only board go with the ride dh. i had an 09 and it was so sick and buttery in the park. easy spins, big pops, nice presses, etc.but it was shit on everything but park so....

C2 Banana profile
Magnetraction Edges
Sandwich construction
True twin shape
Double sintered UHMW sidewalls
Quasi Glass
Mervin AG1 Eco farmed wood core
Sintered 9900 alloy base
those are the specs. magnetraction and baller and you can make your stance reeeal wide and still be twin.

Not rockered though, but they do have some kind of Triple Base Tech thing, I have little to no idea wtf that is but Halldor slays and its owned by him and Eiki and they're mad chill, I'd try a Lobster.

triple base is arguable the best technology to come out so far.

simply put, instead of being rockered tip to tail, the board is rockered edge to edge. but not underfoot. because that shit would be gay as fuck.

i still think rocker is a gimmick unless you ride purely rails or urban. ive never ridden a rocker board and been like "wow this is really improving my snowboarding expirience" i had a zero camber nitro t1 that i thought was actually pretty good, but really prefer to ride very stiff, very wide, very normal snowboards. TBT is hotness though, it really does feel nice. it takes a bit to get used to on rails and boxes because it makes you wanna slip out (or at least it felt that way for me) but once you get the hang of it its the best shit in the world without sacrificing any pop or rideability. it makes the snowboard better without making it any worse.

that capita guy gave some pretty solid advice on board choice. except dont buy a capita stairmaster extreme. it is the most fragile board ever made, im sure some guy will quote that line and be all like "NAH BRO ITS SICK I RODE IT OVER A ROCK!!" but really its just a shitty design. i have had a few and they wre by far the best boards ive ever owned, but they all completely fell apart in just a few weeks. the sidewalls are die-cut and when they are overlayed over the dampning system in caused the sidewall to flex in and out and eventually pop out entirely its a MASSIVE design flaw that capita has still somehow not noticed. and its fucking retarded and the sidewall is only made that way for aesthetic reasons. fucking stupid as FUCK.

have you heard anything about Capita's Flat Kick tech? I'm looking at the Indoor Survival FK and I'm just curious as to what it's all about.

its arguably the best reverse camber option. its the most fun at least while still being really rideable in everyday conditions. most reverse camber boards i couldnt even stand to be on, but the flat kick in a capita makes rails and shit fun. one of my friends is over 6' and rides a capita horroscope 151 every day on really big jumps, rails, everything. like stomping 9s and shit. but hes not really a sane or normal human being.

Holy shit 162 is huuuge! I tried riding something like that and it was a yacht on snow haha but I'm short, even if the size works for you, I could potentially see it being tedious in the park, I dunno.
Also about the DH I found it stiff imo, but again I ride noodles. And I only did a run or two on a DH.

I was kinda in the same situation. I snowboarded for a bunch of years, and decided to add skiing to the repertoire as well. (plus, working on mountain for a flat ski resort like Vail, it was much easier getting around).

I have been riding two different brands for the last 6 years or so. My pow boards are Capita. They have been a ton of fun, extremely reliable, and a great all around board. I'm guessing you're not going to be riding a ton of park, since you're just starting out. The Quiver Killer, Indoor Survival, and my all-time favorite board ever the Black Snowboard of Death, would make great boards with you. And Flat-kick Technology is absolutely worth it. I will agree with someone above, the Stairmaster is a super fun board, but they're not built to last. Blew my first one up in a hurry.

For my park board, I have been riding Omatic. Hands down, the most bomb proof boards I have ever ridden. Between the two boards, I have 300+ days. They're definitely more freestyle oriented, but certainly can be ridden all over the mountain.

As for size, 210 is a pretty solid guy. Again, if you're looking for an all-mountain board, I would go no less than 160. It won't feel any longer than a 156, but will be a bit more solid on landings and cruise over soft/cruddy snow much better.

I ride a Ride Machete. Theyre soo solid, especially if you're 75%mtn 25%park like me. Its rockered and has alot of pop for playing around and nollieing and whatnot. Its also not bad in the pow, and it turns silky smooth and easily. All in all the perfect all mountain board, you can take it anywhere. Plus you can probly get one with bindings for around 300$

I tore my right meniscus and im regular, so theoretically i should be worse off than you. That being said, I've never had any problems snowboarding. It's alot safer on the knees

Get a 157-159 imo.

Burton blows.

I really liked Rome and Ride boards.

DH or DH2 are like the nicest boards ever. Could recommend them to anyone.

*I posted this in the dead snowboard cult in like february, so this is probably the first time it will be read.

I demo'd a bunch of the 2012 boards a few weeks ago and have to say I was very impressed with the Rome Agent Rocker, the thing grips like a mofo, has a ton of pop and still floats. I currently ride a DH2.4 which has prorize (camber and slight early rise)and I love the blend of stability, pop and float while still being playful when you want.

Some of the Bataleon boards where insane, normal camber but flat rectangles in the tip and tail that creat on of the most unique riding boards I have ever been on. You can flat base on these things like crazy cause the edges are turned up at the nose and tail. Plus the board had a sick graphic that included a boob.

Wasn't too impressed with the skate banana, felt a little to loose and unstable for my preference, but tons of fun for jibing.

The Capita NAS was great for just maching on the groomers. Full circle technology. NAS is an acronym for Normal Ass Snowboard but I had to keep remiding myself I wasnt on a LIB cause the narrow ass snowboards. Only regular camber board I rode and I rode it after trying probably 7-8 rockered/flat/bataleon wierd shit/hybrid boards and I gotta say I really liked it. The stability is amazing and it gave me a reminder that even though all this new tech is coming out, traditional camber still has a lot to offer.

The K2 happy hour was a pretty good ride, seemed to hold a little better than the banana and had a lot more pop, just though I was going to stab somebody with those old school sharp tip and tail.

I rode quite a few others so if you are still lookin for a board or waiting on 11/12 stuff just ask.

what are you, like 5'2, 120lbs?

For someone over 200lbs, a 160 is nowhere near too big for riding outside of the park.

I have a few questions, idk if you'll be able to answer them but any help is appreciated.

I'm looking at the Dinosaurs Will Die Rat Maet board. reverse camber, the YES Typo, and Capita Stairmaster (not the extreme) pr the Capita Indoor Survival FK. Anything to say about any of those boards??

Rome is tight in my books so far, and as much as I hate to say it Burton makes good shit...ridden their shit, no complaints for the most part, and a bunch of homies rode Burton and well they're pretty alright...lame...but alright
