Beating a dead horse here, but I hate high gas prices...

Seems Obama and his administration doesn't... this is getting Orwellian now (props to you if you get that reference). The Energy Secretary is advocating Europe level gas prices. This is absurd.

Quotes for the lazy:

With the national average of gas prices hitting $3.65 a gallon, nearing $6 in some parts of the country, and poised to head even higher, America’s families are wondering when the bleeding at the pump will stop. But for Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu, those steep prices aren’t even a concern. In fact, he says his goal is not to get the price of gasoline to go down.

Chu delivered those stunning remarks in testimony before Congress yesterday. When Rep. Alan Nunnelee (R-Miss.) asked Chu whether it’s his “overall goal to get our price” of gasoline lower, Chu said, “No, the overall goal is to decrease our dependency on oil, to build and strengthen our economy.”

As shocking as his remarks are, they shouldn’t come as a surprise. Chu has a long record of advocating for higher gas prices. In 2008, he stated, “Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.” Last March, he reiterated his point in an interview with Fox News’ Chris Wallace, noting that his focus is to ease the pain felt by his energy policies by forcing automakers to make more fuel-efficient automobiles. “What I’m doing since I became Secretary of Energy has been quite clear. What I have been doing is developing methods to take the pain out of high gas prices.”

as unreasonable this all is, i have to admit that (from a pro-environment perspective) the high prices sort of eliminate "useless" drives.

you really think whether or not you have to go somewhere and not just blow thousands of CO2 for fun.

People still have to drive, raising prices isn't going to stop them. People have already stopped taking daily drives for the hell of it. You think raising prices of gas is going to help move to a different energy source? Wrong, looking for an alternate energy source is going to help move towards and alternate energy source. When that new source does come out, it's not like everyone is going to go and get rid of their gasoline using vehicles and spend bank on some new type of vehicle. I'm not trying to debate, but I know I probably caused it. High gas prices suck, and they are too high.

are you fucking kidding me?! at the moment i pay £1.389 per litre. Works out at around $6.30 a gallon. quit crying.

The price of gasoline is too damn high!

but really, we DO need to decrease our dependency on foreign oil, and oil in general. The guy is right...

beating-a-dead-horse.jpg

that is because europeans don't have any oil left in their countries so you have to import from the rest of the world, don't bitch about it because its your fault your supply ran out

What incentive is there to explore other fuel sources when oil is cheep? Hopefully these prices can light a fire under our asses to find some truly practical alternatives, rather than continue to be the slaves of OPEC.

you think you guys have it bad?? $3.60 a gallon is fucking cheap! In New Zealand we pay $2.20 a litre, there are 3.75 litres per gallon, which makes it about $7 a gallon.
However, we put in 95-98 octane, you guys have like 86.... dont see how thats good for your car

The United States has the lowest gas prices in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GET THE FUCK OVER IT AND QUIT COMPLAINING

You should be thankful you greedy fuck.

The timing of the engine is adjusted, it would be really wasteful for me to run that in my car for example. You guys probly get a lot better mileage on that high end fuel though.

I drove across the country two years ago in a 2007 Mondeo, uses 95, 1000km, averaged 3,1 litres/100 km. It was very low in my books.

European octane ratings are different to American octane ratings.

87 in the US is about what Europe would rate at 91.

So still a little below but not as bigger difference as you'd think.

i used slightly under 5 l/100km while driving in semi-flat terrain in a (bigger?) 1997 VW passat without really driving fuel-efficient.

so on a flat terrain, that might be possible with what i picture as a mondeo

3.1l/100km is not possible in a ford mondeo. Even in a brand new eco whatever mondeo. Absolutely no chance.

Did you forget to fill the tank again after your trip when you were working out those figures?

Oh really, didnt know that.
well in comparison, my 2008 Subaru legacy B-sport runs on average 6L per 100kms, which in your terminology would be 1.58 gallons per 60 miles. I think....Anyone have a similar model that could compare milage and fuel quality. Just interested in this

Then call bullshit on the car's computer, it was what it was and the need for gas during the trip definitely didn't seem off.

Compared to my dad's -87 Volvo which burns roughly 6,5 l/100km on the highway, and closer to 9,5 l/100km in urban areas. I don't even see that as much of a leap seeing that my ex's 2004 Mondeo averaged around 4,2 l/100km on the highway.

I will HAPPILY call bullshit on the cars trip computer.

They are notoriously unreliable. If you want to claim outrageous figures then work it out manually over a couple of tanks of gas.

"Volvo - not everybody's car, but who wants to be everybody?"

"If more people drove Volvos - there'd be more people."

"Bloody Volvo Driver".

They have funny slogans. thats all i wanted to post.

its 1.25 per litre here and there are 3.65 L per galon so calm your tits and try walking somewhere or should things get desperate... take the... BUS

Sure, if I happen to do a similar trip again I'll indulge you (and myself) and keep a manual calculation.

If i cared about the fuel economy of a ford mondeo I would go to one of the hundreds of ford mondeo forums and read about it.

I just wanted to tell you that you were wrong.

I work in the oil industry its great, filling up the car sucks but it feels a little like i'm investing in my own career. Takes the sting away

I know you guys are discussing prices and economics and such, but I thought my unrelated batman .gif's were pretty freakin sweet. I'm just sayin

exactly, I bike or walk all spring, summer, fall and bus in the winter. I dont even have to own a car and I can still get anywhere with relative ease. going out of town is really the only reason I would ever use a car and most people on here (I assume) live in citys so you have even better bus systems and need to leave town less.

also, a handy idea for anyone who says a bike is too much money and/or work to use on a daily basis: Girls like fit guys, girls enable sex, therefore fitness and sex are likely to increase together. More money from not paying for gas means more money for other things (seasons passes? better food, nicer dinners/lunches/breakfasts) the bennefits far out weigh the cons in my eyes.

Fuel prices here in the UK are a joke. Current prices break down:

£1.35 per Litre = £6.07 a Gallon

£6.07 = $9.67 a Gallon

Quit your complaining 'merica...

I don't mean to pick on your post, because it's not exactly a long, thought out paper. However, the information contained within (your post, not your mind)is economically illiterate. The study of economics is all about the hidden costs and benefits. Artificially increasing oil prices won't do the environment any good.

3.65? I have been driving for 6 years and gas prices up here have been higher than that for at least that long!

right now gas is at 1.35/L which is like 5.11/G

so decreasing the demand for oil is not doing any good for the environment? i am studying banking and finance in the 7th semester but my stumped me will happily read your arguments.

I listed my car for sale yesterday.

The gas prices here are pretty high. In Mammoth we are now at $4.70. Heading towards Tahoe they are at $4.99.

I'm not selling because of the gas prices though, I have just realized that it's just as easy to get pretty much anywhere for the same price or less than owning your own car.

It now costs $100 for me to do round trip to LA, plus I pay around $300 for car payment and insurance. That's $400 a month. Mammoth has a free bus system. Round trip to LA is only around $100- $150. If I really needed a car for a day, a car rental is only around $60 for a day including the insurance. Just doesn't make sense.

For $400 I can fly round trip to LA twice, and have an extra $100 to blow on whatever and I save on the 24 hours of driving and get it down to about 8 hours of travel time.

And I should be getting around $2000 more than what my payoff amount which yeah, it sucks that I've invested all this money, but it really just isn't worth it and I can think of some awesomeness to use that $2000 on.

This is the way I'd approach it: If prices were raised high enough to deter a significant amount of people from driving for a length of time significant enough to have an effect on the environment, it would lead to an increase in the cost of -almost- every product and decrease jobs and overall wealth. Historically, environmental protection rises out of economic gains and growth in wealth. People generally don't care about endangered owls when their effort is going into just getting by. Let's be honest, it's the middle and lower classes it's going to screw. The major polluters- the government and corporations- will barely feel it, as the taxpayers are footing their bill. So basically I'm saying you hate poor people. Not really!! I'm open to being convinced otherwise though.

Want to swap locations for a month?

If that's per Gallon, that's really cheap compared to what I'm paying.

See my previous post in this thread

well damn..I thought paying $3.80 today was bad..

anyways, a lot of you guys are saying "just ride bikes or take buses" but outside of main cities or at least where I am from, I can't ride a bike to a store or take a bus. I'm dependent on my car and gas

Obama is not the reason tfor high gas prices. Its all the fucking speculators on wall street. To think that it is the Obama administrations fault is stupid.

"Speculators have pushed crude oil to $105.28 per barrel, up 35 percent since September. Brent crude, Europe’s benchmark, is now $120.37 a barrel – also worrisome because many East Coast refineries use imported oil.

Funny, I don’t hear Republicans rail against speculators. Could that have anything to do with the fact that hedge funds and money managers are bankrolling the GOP as never before?"

I would be MORE than willing to give you a litany of ways that it is.. and also the ways that it isn't.

Just say the word and I'll send the list.

there would be no benefit and it would be pointless, it is hard to explain but a lot of people don't live in or near town here

Deciding whether or not to get involved in this here...

But you know who truly drives the prices of gasoline up and/or down don't you? Futures markets and traders.

Anyway.... America want's cheap oil/gas, it needs to produce it's own domestic supply (or agree to not limit domestic supply from Washington), which in turn doesn't allow for the real cause of price fluctuations to get a grip of situations happening globally - mitigating large swings due to global political instability. What you need is stability in supply. The middle east turmoil, combined with America's reliance on imports of Oil and Gas from the region are what's causing this potential price mess. (The reality is, there is NO current shortage in supply.... but, Futures markets use these reasons to control prices).

America for the record, floats on oceans of oil and gas... and the government knows it too....

All of Europes high prices are due to Tax. The UK is the cheapest place in Europe to buy a litre/gallon of petrol (gas) - PRE-TAX. The prices are driven by the constant increases in fuel duties. It's shitty and shouldn't be happening - raising fuel duty at rates way above inflation is ridiculous and dangerous.

Oh and i've met Sec Chu on numerous occasions - even had him in meetings with me... /claim!
