Be Libertarian with me for ONE election -- Live Free

Absolutely. I'm about to turn 29, so while I wasn't even close to voting age at the time, the 92 election was the first election I was conscious of in any somewhat meaningful sense. My dad is a small business owner and was big time taken by Perot's policies. We had a fucking Ross Perot lawn sign.

Thing was, as will be the case in this election and all others moving forward unless the 2 dominant party system is blown up, a vote for Perot (less mainstream candidate with very little chance to be elected) essentially meant one less vote for Bush (or the candidate of the two major parties that parallels the "Perot" closest). Nader has played the same role in previous election in "stealing" votes from Dems, and we've seen it to some degree with the Libertarian movement gaining a bit more clout.

It would be nice if we had the equal % representation where it would actually be advantageous (in the immediate/shortterm) to vote for less prominent candidates/parties.

No.... women's rights and gay marriage are very much so HUGE issues.

The senate has approved the repeal of the defense of marriage act. Should this make it through the republican controlled house (not likely, but possible) it's up to the president to sign or veto. Should it get vetoed, there is no chance in hell it will get the votes it needs to pass, even though it should. So, the president is going to take a huge roll in this.

Also, I believe gay marriage to not be a state issue. I believe it's a civil rights issue to be left to the church. There should not be a definition of marriage, only an outline of what can be accepted by the government to receive the benefits of a unified couple. If a gay couple can get married in a church that allows it, neat. It's a marriage. If a straight couple can get married by their cousin who took a class online and call it a marriage, then a gay couple should be able to do the exact same thing. No state lines, just religious. If a religion wants to only allow white polydactyl boys, then so be it, I don't give a shit. If they want to block marriage in their own church. I don't give a shit. But in no way should it be stopped outside of that church.

In regards to women's issues.

Arizona just passed a law that says conception begins at the first day of the woman's menstrual cycle which means women can only get an abortion up to 18 weeks rather than 20 since the 20 thing now starts on the first day of the period. However, many life threatening issues aren't visible until the actual 20th week. This doesn't affect many, but the fact that it has to affect any is a problem.

Mississippi tried to pass a law stating that life begins at conception. Had it passed they then could have challenged roe vs wade. I know the likelihood of Roe Vs Wade being overturned is virtually non existent, but the fact that states are even making an attempt and that there is a potential president stating he wants to approve supreme court members that would be more likely to overturn this is fucking SCARY!

Then there are the efforts to take funding from planned parenthood. Change restrictions on the morning after pill. Laws regarding sexual education in schools. Making rape kits the cost of the individual that was raped. SO MANY SMALL THINGS that are actually pretty huge.

explain to me what exactly this "volatile, elementarily, and simply head splittingly (is that a word??) ignorant view of human nature" is? Also, I am curious to hear your explanation of what exactly a "libertarian society" is, and what its down sides are. If by "libertarian society" you mean, a free republic, backed by a free market, then yes, you are correct in your definition. I have a strong feeling that you are one of the misinformed that confuses libertarians with anarchists. Anarchists believe in no government. Libertarians believe in a limited government, but a government that does serve a vital role in the free market: protecting private property rights with a just legal system that recognizes market principals. Its laughable that you think we need the government and public services to maintain things like infrastructure. Why do you think the our infrastructure is so shitty? It is because it is a public entity. You willingly giver the government your money and trust them to invest it wisely in infrastructure... and what do you get in return? a shitty infrastructure. It is honestly laughable that you people complain about all the problems in this country, and then instantly jump to more government as the solution, when it is in fact more government that caused the problems in the first place. You are also wrong in your assumption of the typical libertarian. For example, I am a libertarian, in my early 20's and educated in economics and political science. You, on the other hand, sound more like the lemming you described.

skiminnesota...our political rivalry goes back years. and i finally agree with you. never thought i would ever say that.

And here I was, googling 'FOG' and finding some mentions of the guy's speech from '88 talking about fog.

OP: Gary Johnson is an impressive candidate, and an overall win for the libertarian party. I would also argue that the attention that he is raised is also good for the libertarian movement as a whole. However, Gary Johnson has some positions that make some feel that he is far from a true libertarian. One major concern about Gary Johnson for many of us Liberty fans are his beliefs on interventionism. I am not saying that he believes in neo-conservative foreign policy, like Bush and Obama, but he has stated that he believes that intervention in foreign lands is acceptable and that he supports backing Israel with U.S. tax dollars and military might. Though he may be wishy washy with foreign policy, Gary Johnson is still 100x the candidate that Obama/Romney is, which is why he will be getting my vote in November.

100% spot on. he's not perfect. plenty of things make him far from a true libertarian. but in contrast to the other choices. its an easy decision for me.

and +k for making this thread. It has been a minute since I have been on NSG, and I was pleased to see this. I don't remember many threads about liberty or libertarianism when I used to me more active in NSG. Sadly, it appears that most on NS are confused about libertarian basics, and are extremely misinformed in their analysis of the government and the economy.

Honestly, you really didn't say anything of substance in this post other than "No one understands politics like I do".

The thing with a libertarian society is that the rich people will allways exploit the poor (and the environment) for money and eventually the gap between the rich and the poor will become so great that the poor will rebel. Having said that there is a number of things i do agree with rocky on including legalizing marijuanna, cutting defense spending, and the smart use of tax payers money not the "Lets spend it on what ever the fuck we feel like till we are in shit tons of debt ."

99% of americans realize Gary and the libertarian party will garner 0 electoral college votesbut get on down with your 1% dream just don't expend to much energy

the electoral polifucktard season will be over soon then it's ski season

At least Johnson is 100x better than Bob Barr. God, that guy sucked hard. I actually went to the voting booth and wrote in "no one" in 2008.

The only Libertarian I'd vote for is Ron Swanson... if only to see him do his thing...

"Libertarians support maximum liberty in both personal and economic matters. They advocate a much smaller government; one that is limited to protecting individuals from coercion and violence. Libertarians tend to embrace individual responsibility, oppose government bureaucracy and taxes, promote private charity, tolerate diverse lifestyles, support the free market, and defend civil liberties."

Not really. Most libertarians I know worship Ayn Rand, and she said that she fought against the idea that charity is a moral duty. She said she doesn't care if people wanted to do it, but the way she described it makes you think she believes it to be a dirty thing to be avoided (kind of like my view on meth).

Of course she also said that libertarians are just hippies that are really collectivists but don't want to admit it, so I think maybe the love affair is one sided.

A lot of her philosophy is kind of foggy.

well I have no clue who Ayn Rand is, but i guess that comes with being new to the whole libertarian thing. I dont see a problem with charity, but I don't see it as a duty. yes, i volunteer my time and try to donate when possible, but i don't see it as a moral obligation. what's a collectivist?

I dont mind the Libertarian platform either, but I would never spend my vote on it because it has no chance of winning. Even if he's the #1 canidate in your eyes it's best to vote for your next best option or third or fourth whatever it may be as long as it's a democrat or republican. The 1-2% of the vote Ralph Nader won in 2000 quite possibly cost Al Gore the election and we don't want that bullshit again.
